To illustrate the point I took a radical example. If you like we could use something more realistic but the point remains that higher draft picks generally have a greater chance of being more talented than lower draft picks. Therefore, if you're not going to make a reasonable run in Oct why not obtain the most talented picks you can in preparation for the upcoming years?

Duran Ks on a ball at eye level. What is it with these bums? No plate discipline at all.

He was lucky. He had one good outing after a lot of awful ones. You can’t run him out there every fifth game if you want to maximize your chances to make the playoffs
