  1. It has to drop low enough so that we can sign him and still stay under the cap. The top priority this season should be staying under the cap so that we have lots of money to spend next winter when the FA SP crop is available. The second priority is to fix the clubhouse, and thats already happening. The third priority is to clear out the deadwood on the team. And the last priority is to win games. IMO.
  2. I am off to the Dominican Republic today, so you guys are off the hook for a week. Before I leave, this is from a Shaughnessy column today. I interpret it as a business plan to stay within the cap by the managements: “There’s been significant commitments made the last two offseasons which pushed our payroll further north, and we made those decisions knowing that it wasn’t going to continue to go further north at the same trajectory forever,’’ said new general manager Ben Cherington before last night’s feast. Music to my ears.
  3. Generally players are swapped or signed either in the offseason or at the trading deadline. I can't remember a player that was obtained in late April. Can you? Also, although I don't know all the details of the cap, its illogical to think that somehow if they just delay signing guys until late April they are off the hook, that that salary doesn't count either this year or next. Well this year we can't afford it if we are going to be under the cap, and next year we will need ALL of that money to sign some great FA SPs.
  4. Of course most if not all of the impact players will be gone by late April. How often do you see teams adding to the roster in late April? Besides, I think they should maintain as much flexibility on next year's cap number as possible. There will be a lot of talent available then.
  5. Really. I thought that was a done deal.
  6. I think we are good enough to compete for a playoff spot right now-just because I think we will be able to bash our way in, perhaps. There will be one more spot available too. Not saying the playoffs are a sure thing, but maybe 50-50 as things now stand. I don't think our top three can stay healthy all year, not all of them. And behind them is an untested SP or two and the bargain basement dregs. It could go the other way too, if things stay the same. We could easily sink into competing for third place with the Blue Jays. I think that scenario is just as likely as us making the playoffs, as things now stand. The lack of news is refreshing IMO, and I know that business plan is not popular nowadays. I want to see this team get its act together this year, along with its resources. For me, that would spell success.
  7. Dan Wheeler would help. I cannot believe he isn't signed yet. He was very effective last year, though it isn't pretty out there with him, what with the shaking of the glove before every pitch.
  8. I am a realist, and I dont get 1/10 of the complaints these guys get. You will. By the end of the season. I don't think that any of us has any plans to leave, despite your kind invitation.
  9. By the way, wasn't today the deadline for Ortiz's arbitration? No deal? He is actually going to arbitration? He must be thrilled at the amount of "respect" he is getting from the Sox.
  10. If we realists are not careful, they are liable to smite us.
  11. Several people here have indicated that they think the nicknames are funny.
  12. Sometimes with you its either black or white with other posters. There are the bad guys and there are the good guys here. It actually a spectrum, not all or nothing.
  13. Here you go VA. From page 366 of this thread: For the record, I think the team is now headed in the right direction. They have fired an incompetent manager who lost control of the clubhouse and replaced him with a disciplinarian who will fix that problem. They got rid of the GM who put them in the hole they are now in, and they have so far held on to the resources that will probably make them a very real contender next year. Does that sound pessimistic to everyone here-or does it sound like a difference of opinion about long term strategy for success of the team? Ready to admit you are wrong yet?
  14. VA sometimes has a warped self-serving view of reality.
  15. Here I blasted getting Bailey: The fact is that Bailey's career numbers to date are slightly better than Papelbon's. Bailey: 2.07/.954 Papelbon: 2.33/1.018 Paps has been around for 7 years; Bailey just three. The issue is...
  16. From page 322 (about Valentine): I lauded his hiring because I think he is the best person to accomplish a specific task: straightening out the clubhouse. I do not think we have the talent to make a serious run at a ring, but we have enough talent to challenge the Rays and Yankees for a playoff spot. It will take about two years to change the chemistry and obtain enough talent to go for it all. Need more?
  17. Really. Would you like me to prove you wrong? I can dig up some of my posts about Valentine and my support for him, or about my contention that the franchise is on the right track if you like. Or the fact that I am witholding judgement on Cherington, not ripping into him at all. Would you then admit that you are wrong?
  18. Well....are you?
