I read that the medical staff is very similar to last year's staff, being from the same hospital (doctors at the same hospital tend to practice in a similar manner because peer review will single out doctors that differ from the "norm" at that hospital). The only difference is that Dr Gill is no longer in charge. This is concerning.

I don't think anyone knows where they stand vis a vis the cap. Bellhorn is convinced they are over; I am not so sure. You seem to think they are under it. I also think that if they are close they should shed more salary. But IF they are already over, its time to get a good SP and then we ought to make a run for it. I like the scenario Paladios presented-IF we are already over the cap.

I never said otherwise-except if they are already over budget and are penny pinching without obtaining a quality SP. Top goal=staying under the cap. If they are already over it, go for Oswalt or Jackson or trade for a good SP.

Yeah. That WOULD be very funny if it weren't so plausible. But we have nothing to worry about. Matsusaka will probably be back to save the day in midseason. Our pitching will be fine with Lester-Matsusaka-Miller-Silva-Padilla. Right? Did I forget anyone?

Let me get this right: you are asking me to come up with a nickname for this team? Now you know that i hardly ever use nicknames, but sure, I'll try. How about calling this year "The Aegean Stable Year", the year we clean the stables up from all the s*** left over from our previous GM in anticipation of restocking it with thoroughbreds again next year? Or "Lucchino's Lament"-surely he is looking back at some of what was done last year with at least SOME regret or lament. I will give it some more thought if you don't like these nicknames.

Maybe the Yankees will take him. Anyone who will take him and his $$$$$$ off our hands is good with me. I am half kidding. Its too late now. All the good SP are off the market except Jackson, and he isn't even that good. We signed someone we didn't need in exchange for a position we really needed help with. Stupid.

We aren't getting Oswalt. He is apparently going to sign with the Cards "soon". We also aren't getting Jackson, who wants a multiyear contract. No worries though. We have a whole toilet full of options that we signed this offseason to plug the holes in our SP rotation. And we will be seeing lots of them this year, make no mistake.

Fair enough. Thats certainly one option-to spend the money to compete this year for a ring. Its going to be tough. Lots of teams have greatly improved, and even with the addition of an Oswalt or Jackson we will find it hard to match up with the Angels/Tigers/Yankees/Rays etc. If we are really at 180 million I would prefer shedding more salary to get down to the cap then having lots of flexibility to go after a couple of primo SP next year. Thats another business plan option.

Yet you have posted many times that they should exceed their cap this year in order to get another SP so that we can compete for a ring. So are you one of those greedy **********s who expects a championship every year? Why not admit that the is a year we aren't going to get one and step back and plan well for next year? To me thats a much sounder business plan.

They will need to find a way to get under the cap unless they plan to go way over it next year when they sign a quality SP or two-and they BETTER be prepared to do that next year.

Because their greed is going to produce a losing team this year. Any Sox fan wants a great team every year. Factoring in the greed of our BILLIONAIRE owners is an unpleasant necessity.

Cody Ross sucks. Another warm body obtained during a rebuilding year. Thats all it is. Keep under the cap. Thats whats most important.

FWIW, I hope I am proven wrong about stage 2. It could happen. Unlikely, given our pitching issues, but if we can stay healthy and one or more of the bums we signed experiences revelation, it could happen. Not impossible. I still think that this is the best long term business strategy, though it will hurt this year, probably.

I believe I wrote here a long time ago that it would come to this. I think I said that after a long search and "due diligence" the Sox would announce that they are very comfortable with the roster as it now exists. These buffoons are so predictable.

It has to drop low enough so that we can sign him and still stay under the cap. The top priority this season should be staying under the cap so that we have lots of money to spend next winter when the FA SP crop is available. The second priority is to fix the clubhouse, and thats already happening. The third priority is to clear out the deadwood on the team. And the last priority is to win games. IMO.

I am off to the Dominican Republic today, so you guys are off the hook for a week. Before I leave, this is from a Shaughnessy column today. I interpret it as a business plan to stay within the cap by the managements: “There’s been significant commitments made the last two offseasons which pushed our payroll further north, and we made those decisions knowing that it wasn’t going to continue to go further north at the same trajectory forever,’’ said new general manager Ben Cherington before last night’s feast. Music to my ears.

Generally players are swapped or signed either in the offseason or at the trading deadline. I can't remember a player that was obtained in late April. Can you? Also, although I don't know all the details of the cap, its illogical to think that somehow if they just delay signing guys until late April they are off the hook, that that salary doesn't count either this year or next. Well this year we can't afford it if we are going to be under the cap, and next year we will need ALL of that money to sign some great FA SPs.

Of course most if not all of the impact players will be gone by late April. How often do you see teams adding to the roster in late April? Besides, I think they should maintain as much flexibility on next year's cap number as possible. There will be a lot of talent available then.
