  1. Melancon has a career ERA, mostly achieved in Houston. of 3.50. You have to adjust that upward for pitching in the AL and upwards again for pitching in the ALE. Bowden has a career ERA of 5.65. He hasn't shown us any talent. Albers has a career ERA of 5.06. He had one half of one good season with us. I don't see the talent level in the pen you see. Its BELOW AVERAGE. That will not make it possible for even the best manager to pull the rabbit out of his hat.
  2. Just as I thought. It is a well known fact that Valentine invented the wrap and serves nothing but primo beer. He also invented waiting in line. Before that people were just milling around not knowing where to stand. Modern day baseball players should learn to do their homework before spouting off.
  3. Wonder why Youk was benched after playing in just two games. Hmmmmm...
  4. The mere force of his personality would have won two games for us. :harhar:
  5. Generally speaking, a good SP is more valuable than a good RP. Rings are won with SP first, then RP, then some timely offense. Thats why the Rays will continue to compete: great SP. That said, our pen is in such shambles that if we want to try to play in October this year we will need reinforcements either from within or via trade or FA.
  6. Easy. BOTH are more terrifying.
  7. I realize that there are two very valid opinions about what should be done with Bard. You know what I think; you know what E-1 thinks. Both positions are defensible. My previous post had to do with the CURRENT state of the personnel in our bullpen.
  8. So what-you are happy with the people in our bullpen? Yes, I can tell in in three games. I could tell that our bullpen stinks BEFORE those three games. As soon as our closer went down we went from a bullpen with a lot of question marks to a bullpen that is likely below average. I can see it; Mazz saw it ( would you like me to repost his article?); many others see it too. Its not a competitive bullpen, not for a contending team.
  9. Not idiots. Passionate. Red Sox fans are some of the most passionate fans in the world.
  10. Hard to really fault Aceves. In the role he played last year he excelled. This year he was forced into a role that he is incompetent at. If you look at our bullpen the quality just isn't there. They are trying, but they stink, for the most part, or they are in roles that they are not suited for. Part of this was due to Bailey's unforeseen injury; part due to our FO mining the dregs for pitching help and not going for quality. If you look at our bullpen and expect something other than what you are getting, then you are going to be very disappointed.
  11. There is a long list of high quality SP who will become FA this year. Hamels would be a great addition, but there are many more. I think that list was posted here earlier. If not I would be happy to dig it up for anyone interested. Also, with lots of $$ coming off our books next year we should be able to spend relatively freely on the available FA. Many people think that I am a pessimist here, but thats not entirely accurate. I am only pessimistic for the short term, this year. I think that if we play our card right the long term outlook is very very good. This is the transition year.
  12. Not denying that there are a lot of positives from this series: Lester, Morales, Gonzo, Pedey..and so forth. CB will get better, and Beckett will get better IF he is not hurt, as I suspect he is. As you said, the pen is a problem. I don't know how you can really compete for the playoffs with a pen that is as bad as ours is. Also, Bard and Doubront are unknown entities as SP. They could excel; they could stink. It will be interesting to see how they do in TO.
  13. I think he could be an improvement over Miller or Albers potentially. Again, no easy answers. Too many weaknesses on the pitching staff.
  14. Just checked out Mike Gonzalez's stats. I do think he might be worth a flyer. We are going to need him plus one or two more, minimum. I am a pretty strong believer that Bard belongs in the pen this year, but I understand E-1's reasoning. I would prefer to wait until next year for that transition as we could have a very strong staff next year if Bard is strong as a SP and if we get one more very good SP as a FA next year. There will be lots of them available, relatively speaking. Its just going to be a very rough year.
  15. I was referring to Uehara. Gonzalez is a FA who could be cheap. I admit that I know nothing about him. Is he worth it? Is he a good quality pitcher-because we already have enough low quality pitchers on staff.
