  1. We aren't going to get many opportunities like that.
  2. Some people here thought we would have no problems with the A's pitching. Well, for one game, we didn't.

  4. We are snoozing through this game. Bard better shut this popgun offense down or we will lose the series to the A's....and thats embarassing.
  5. Gonzo's act is getting old too. 0 for 8 in this series. Pathetic.
  6. It about time Gonzo did something for the team.
  7. Bard has to learn to trust his stuff out there. He still seems tentative and nibbles too much. He needs to pound the strike zone, especially early in the count.
  8. Sure would be nice to play with the lead tonite.
  9. "You are what your record says you are" Wise words. Yes, right now Yadier Molina is a better player than all of those guys. I expect that will change. I also expect that the Orioles pitching will deteriorate to reach its usual abyssmal level. Bellhorn was noting that the Orioles and Rays have each won five games in which they scored fewer than four runs and we have won just once. I commented on what I think is the reason behind our failure to win those types of games: crappy pitching. Thats usually the reason for that kind of trend, wouldn't you agree?
  10. Middlebrooks deserves a shot right now. He has been on a very hot streak at Pawtucket and his numbers are bound to come back to earth in the majors. I hope people have realistic expectations for this guy because he is unlikely to keep up his current pace. If he can just be better than Youkilis was and not look so very silly at the plate half the time I will be satisfied. Any more than that is gravy.
  11. Interesting comments. Apparently I misremembered something here...or more accurately, I should have phrased my comments about the Orioles/Rays pitching and our own pitching as follows: RIGHT NOW the Orioles have been pitching well and our pitching has stunk. That is a true statement. The Rays pitching has been mediocre, but their team ERA is warped by a couple of woodshed jobs at the hands of the Red Sox. I prefer to base my opinions on real statistics rather than how I wish things were and I recognize the fact that some people don't like the statistics I choose. In that case, find your own statistics. Opinions are generally more valid if they can be substantiated in some way with facts.
  12. No surprise there. Those are two teams with great pitching. The Orioles right now are #2 in the AL, and although the Rays are #7, that number is distorted by the beating they took in a few games at the Red Sox hands. Since our pitching as it is now constructed stinks for the most part, we won't be winning many games that we don't bludgeon our opponents to death.
  13. Cook is going to be called up and Clay Bumholtz is going to be sent to the DL because of a blister he has developed. I can see that scenario happening. Meanwhile, right-hander Clay Buchholz developed a blister on his pitching hand Monday night. He has pitched through blister issues in the past, and in a meeting yesterday with Valentine and pitching coach Bob McClure, he described the situation as “chronic” (it typically arises when he throws his curveball). The Red Sox aren’t unconcerned about the blister, but Buchholz also has an 8.69 ERA in five starts. Valentine said his pitches have been sharp, particularly Monday night against the Athletics, but the club is looking for an explanation as to why the results haven’t been better. Even if he’s able to withstand the blister, it might present an opportunity for the Red Sox to skip Buchholz’ next start, give him a chance to throw an extra bullpen session and plug Cook into the rotation rather than putting him in the bullpen. slauber@bostonherald.com
  14. I hope I am no dope. Only a dope would get stuck defending a position that is no longer valid. I was watching the Celtics game tonite and saw Avery Bradley out there leading the team at point guard in Rondo's absence. Had you asked me last year if he would ever amount to anything I would have said emphatically no, he was a bum. Now look at him. He has become a very good basketball player with a very high ceiling. Should I try to defend an indefensible position and continue to insist that he is a bum, or should I recognize the reality of what he has become. The same can be said of some baseball players. I admit that I thought that Cook was cooked, that he had nothing left. Now, based on his performance in his rehab starts, I am not so sure. He should get a chance on the roster. If he fails, he is gone; if he succeeds, we have another decent arm.
  15. Only Minnesota has worse pitching in the AL than we do statistically right now. Could change, but right now, our pitching is not only not fine, it stinks. Statistically.
  16. Let look at the math. If we have to get 7 runs per game to win we would score 1134 runs in the season. Our killer offense in 2004 scored only 949. Fact is, with this kind of pitching we are not making the playoffs.
  17. 5-1. Great. Well this game is over. We just cannot allow 5 or 6 runs against this popgun offense.
  18. Kapsis, there are many successful pitchers who rely on location rather than velocity. I also believe that there is more room for error when you throw hard, but its far from a prerequisite for success as a pitcher. I would take a guy with command over a guy who throws hard with no command any day.
  19. Thats absurd. You really think its sad that some of us who doubted Cook now look at how he has done and have changed our minds? What would truly be sad is if we looked at his stats and continued to opine that he doesn't deserve a shot in the rotation or at least on the roster. Situations change. You cannot get stuck in the mud by stubbornly ignoring the facts.
