    I sure hope so. But watching WMB's approach at the plate is worrisome. He has a hole in his swing: he cannot lay off outside off speed pitches and routinely fails to make contact with them. Admittedly, its a tough pitch to handle, but he has to learn to swing only at strikes most of the time and fight off those tough pitches. I hope he can solve this soon.

    I believe that there is a hitch in exercising that option. I could be wrong, but I think that his luxury tax hit is much larger than the league minimum if we do that. Maybe someone with more knowledge about the intricacies of his contract could elucidate this.

    How long should we keep Lavarnway, who has hit at every level of baseball he was given a fair shot at, in the minors if Salty continues to struggle? I think that's a fair question.

    Tough series against the A's coming up. Their pitching is better than what they have shown so far this year, thought their hitting, which currently leads the league in runs scored, is going to settle down to lower tier eventually. If we can manage two of three then 17-8 or 18-7 is not out of the question.

    Its easy to look up Bard's minor league stats on baseballreference.com. So far at Portland at the AA level he has pitched 8 innings and has an ERA of 4.50 and a WHIP of 1.375. He has four walks and four K's. Doesn't look like Daniel Bard is going to help the Red Sox any time soon, unfortunately.

    Got it. I do not necessarily agree however that until a player has played for the Red Sox one cannot form a reasonable opinion about the wisdom of acquiring a player as long as there is some logic and statistics to back up that opinion. The acquisition of Carl Crawford is an example of this. Many people did not think he was a good match for the team and felt that his career OPS of .781 with the Rays was not worth the money he was to be paid in Boston and that that money was better spend elsewhere. Crawford had not played a single inning for the team but reasonable opinions about him abounded. The same can be said of Victorino and Dempster.

    I am not judging anyone right now. I like what I see so far, but only 10% of the season has been played. You can use some statistical analysis to make an educated guess about how the major league acquisitions might perform for the team, but in many ways Boston is different than other markets. If you are referring to Lavarnway or some of our other prospects you are right: until they get a fair shot, assuming they deserve it based on their minor league performances, we cannot accurately judge how they might perform in the ML. The problem with some of them, like Lavarnway, is that he will most likely never get a shot at it. So is it better to let him wallow in our minor league system or should we package him and try to get help at a position we are weak at?

    Alone, you are probably right. Packaged with other prospects its possible we could harvest a good pitching prospect. Lavarnway is such a prospect. He has hit at every minor league level he has played in and has not received a fair shot with the Red Sox (and probably never will) because he is blocked by Saltalamacchia. As long as Salty is here, Lavs will not be brought up. He is better than a backup catcher. And Vasquez is highly rated by some as having good potential at catcher as well.

    Its April 21. Isn't it a little early to pass judgement on Ben's offseason moves? Both Dempster and Victorino have certainly exceeded expectations, but come July when half the season has been played, who knows what their numbers will look like. Or in Victorino's case, how will obtaining him look in the third year of his contract? For my part, I am just going to sit back and enjoy the ride. Judging this team's parts will take more time than three weeks of a six month season.

    Another way to look at it, given his history (lifetime BA: .251, OPS: .765-including the numbers from this year's fast start) is that he will most likely settle down to his performing at numbers close to his career norms and that since he is at the top of his game, now is the time to trade him, perhaps for more pitching prospects.

    Uehara is not durable enough Fred. They are trying not to even let him go on consecutive days. Bailey will be fine...similar to Papelbon. Not Rivera, but pretty good.

    The thing is Jung: they are right! The Yankees right now are in real trouble. It will be interesting to see if Hank opens up his wallet so they can once again buy their way into a successful season.

    Lets face it guys: its good to beat the snot out of the Yankees no matter when it is during the season and no matter where both teams are in the standings. Great start! Keep it going on Wed!

    When he is placed in a role in which he is most likely to succeed (long relief, spot SP) rather than closer or in the rotation) he has proven that he can pitch well. As long as he pitches well and is not a side show on the team I think he should remain with the team. After all, he is, at times, entertaining in the mould of Julian Tavares, right?

    Google "Boston Red Sox ZIPS predictions" (they won't let me post links here until I get to 15 posts). The offense will be formidable, most likely. I think they will easily finish in the top third in the AL in runs scored and OPS.

    Lester has lost velocity from his four seam fastball, about 1.5mph over the last few years. When that happens its not likely to return. Unless he becomes more and more of a finesse pitcher-which is tough to do, but not impossible-he is likely to remain a #3 SP at best.

    Lester has also lost velocity from his four seam fastball-from just over 95mph in 2009 to about 93.5 in 2011 and 12. I do not think that Farrell can correct that; once a pitcher begins to lose velocity he rarely regains it. The difference in speed between his FB and his cutter is less pronounced now that when he was at his peak. I think that is at least as important as the difference in movement on the cutter. Pitch Fx shows this more clearly than I have probably stated it.

    My bad. You are right. I wonder if the problems he had with the Sox could be considered a "new injury" and are therefore exempt under his contract.

    There is an "out" if the elbow problems he had before he arrived cause him to miss a significant amount of time, but no mention of his shoulder being able to void his contract. Here is what his contract says: "2015 club option at Major League minimum if Lackey misses significant time with surgery for pre-existing elbow injury in 2010-14" Not sure if TJ surgery was even on the same elbow that was an issue before he came here.

    Thats a tough call: Lackey is being paid I think $16M this year. Do you really think they will let him sit and pay him that kind of money?

    One of the Sawxheads posters put up this post today. I have not verified it, but if its true, its pretty disturbing: WEEI's John Dennis reported this morning that Valentine 'recently' called a team meeting to discuss attitude, focus, etc., and that in the middle of it David Ortiz stood up, turned his back, got dressed and walked out.

    That is absolutely not true. By trading Ortiz our FO would be admitting that failure is unavoidable this year. Maybe then they would bring up some of the kids like Lavarnway and Ciriaco permanently. I would rather watch those guys play than the sloths we are putting on the field now.

    In the end, someone has to take responsibility for this mess. IMO its a divided blame that I place on not only Cherington (for the reasons I mentioned and stand by), but also Lucchino and especially the owners who failed to complete the job of cleaning out the FO to make room for new blood. Cherington is not new blood, he is a disciple of the incompetent buffoon who dirtied the franchise then abandoned the mess to be fixed by someone else. There is plenty of blame to go around. Frankly, I am not sure this can be fixed until our current owners sell the team or hire someone competent to run it then stay the hell away.

    All Epstein signings. As I have been writing here until I want to puke, Epstein left this franchise with a task equivalent to shoveling out the Aegean Stables.
