Of course not...but none of that has happened yet. In fact, as far as I recall, all that has happened is signing Moreland.

Its also highly unlikely that DD is going to allow this uncertainty to go on forever. Thats just plain stupid. He will not be making public his negotiating tactics, but I am quite sure that he has a deadline in mind. Eventually it will be time to move on.

You can say that ("his career would have fallen apart) about most pitchers in the game. Very few pitchers maintain their level of excellence. In 2009-2011 he was very very dominant, especially in 2010. I remember watching his 95+ fastball combined with a 90 mph slider, both with very good location when he was on. All you really n need is two pitches as a RP; as a starter you need at least 3 most of the time. Bard never developed that third reliable pitch-AND he lost the ability to locate. I think his lack of success as a SP played with his head and permanently screwed him up: he lost confidence. Had he stayed in the pen, where he belonged until he had that third pitch, I think he would have had a very good career as a RP.

Yup. Five years: no more. And even that is a stretch for Martinez, who is really going to end up as a DH. I would even prefer four years, though that is probably unlikely to get him. Longer than that (5) financially hobbles the franchise for many years to come. I can put up with one year of mediocrity as long as we have access to next year's FA class.

As is just about everything else Sox-related this offseason. Meanwhile us ordinary fans sit hear twittling our thumbs waiting for something to happen that is REAL.....and wagging our typing fingers about like chiclets bouncing over a tile floor. Waiting........waiting......

I would not offer him more years unless he accepts much less money. And thats not going to happen.

We will not get him for less than five years; we will likely not even get him for that many years (5). While I agree with you that he isn't worth a long contract at high AAV, thats what it will take to sign him. If we do not improve offensively its going to be a long long summer.

Everybody cherry picks the stats and data that best support their position...everybody. Its not only true here but its true everywhere else too.

I am not a big fan of JBJ, but to say that he has "no value except to Red Sox fans" is inaccurate. True, he is not very good offensively, but defensively he is a wizard, and he does have a favorable contract.

One thing Jacko is right about: DD is going to have to get one more decent SP. Our depth at the position is suspect.

Pretty much. Some people who go through microfracture treatment get temporary relief (some don't), but its almost always a very short term solution. My guess is that he will need a new knee down the road.

What is idiotic is that you, as a Yankee fan, can postulate injuries or other factors in a futile attempt to dilute what the data says about performance of Red Sox pitchers in order to elevate in your own mind the performance of a guy your team might eventually sign. Pomeranz is not injured yet. No one is injured yet. What Pomeranz has done ON THE FIELD during the time he is there is better than what Cole has done on the field while he is there. That is all I am saying. Given the choice in starting pitchers I will always take the guy who surrenders fewer runs.

I am not optimistic that Pedroia can be counted on the play many more games for the Red Sox. The procedure he went through has an awful track record. His knee is shot.

Great analysis. So you are going to postulate an injury to one of the Sox starters as proof that Cole is a better pitcher? Two can play at that game. Lets say Cole gets injured and can only pitch 100 innings this year and Porcello has a rebound year with an ERA under 4. Cole isn't even my number 4 SP any more. I deal in what is real performance by historical data; you deal in what might be. If all the pitchers mentioned are healthy, Cole is my number 4 SP this year.

Reread my post. I said that if all those guys are healthy then Cole, based on his career performance, is my #4 SP. Who among those guys has the lowest career ERA+?
