Nunez sucks defensively at any base, but since we were talking about 3B I used that as my example. As for Devers, I haven't been watching many ST games, but last year he had no concept of the strike zone. Unless he morphs into Vlad Guerrero or that changes he will never reach what many here call his "potential". So far I have seen no evidence of either.

Nunez is an adventure out there, especially at 3B. Maybe he can hit like LeMahieu, but as a defender....he sucks.

How do you define success? Return to the rotation? Performing as well or better than before TJS? The data from various studies is conflicting. Here is another one that purports to be "the largest analysis of MLB pitchers who have undergone TJS". The conclusion was that: "There is a significant proportion of players (18%) who do not resume major league career. For those that return, a high proportion return to the disabled list, both for arm conditions (in general) and specifically for elbow pain (47% and 23%, respectively). Moreover, many performance statistics showed a decline following surgery, most notably in ERA, WHIP, opposing batting average, innings pitched, percentage of fastballs thrown and fastball velocity." I doubt that there are any controlled studies to support the hypothesis that SS recover more quickly than pitchers. That said, since both positions are manned by humans with human ulnar collateral ligaments, my guess is that the healing time is similar where healing time means return to 100%. I believe that pitchers take about a year to regain their form (if they ever do-I remember reading somewhere that most guys who have the procedure never regain their velocity). So I would suspect that IF also need a full year. But thats just an unsupported guess. Sure there are. But they are all forbidden. Yes, there goes some insurance out of the pen, but some things transcend baseball. Wright's laundry list is now long enough to warrant his immediate release IMO. -

Even if he was not REQUIRED to let the team know it was a moral imperative that he inform them. Get rid of him and move on. -
DD has already said that he doesn't plan to carry three catchers. I think that Swihart is going to DFA'd. They are likely waiting a bit to do it because doing it a week after his brother died would be heartless.

I think that the pen is suspect. I am surprised that DD didn't make a move to improve it. Its the one area that is likely to stand between now and a deep run in the playoffs IMO. The rest of the team is very good....but the pen....??

Who the hell cares what Kraft does in his bedroom? If he is not married any more he has every right to seek companionship wherever he can find it and its pretty obnoxious of anyone to judge him for it. Even if he were married, thats not something that should concern any of us: it would be ONLY between him and his wife. To label him a "scumbag" for seeking companionship at age 77 - or at any other age for that matter- is the height of sticking your nose in where it doesn't belong.

I would love to see him get an OPS like that, obviously. But at this point that kind of projection doesn't pass the sniff test. All of us watch him at the plate swlnging at too many high strikes. Until he fixes that he isn't going to make that grade.

Steamer projects Devers to hit >.800 OPS? Seriously? I don't see it...not until he learns to stop consistently swinging at balls that are out out of the strike zone. Devers is a poster boy for someone who has lots of *potential* according to many people-but who has shown little to live up to those expectations.

Just out of curiosity, what happens if we trade one of our catchers and then one gets hurt. Who do we have in the minor leagues that could fill in, if anyone? I don't really keep track of the minors as much as some of you do.

You don't know that for sure. I doubt Machado's off field antics are going to cost him much of anything at all. Its all about his play-and the reluctance of owners nowadays to sign big name players to huge contracts.

IMHO Leon has a body type that is subject to breaking down. While any player can get injured its less likely to happen to a younger player who is in decent physical shape. The demands of catching could wear Leon down...maybe this year...maybe next. But a guy in his physical condition is an injury waiting to happen...IMO. I would trade him while his trade value as a good defensive catcher is perhaps at a high point and keep Vas and Swi.

The problem is, its not really MLB competition. The regulars might be out there for a few innings, but mostly the guys playing will never sniff the major leagues. Personally, I find it uninteresting.

Some folks here are convinced that because of Leon our pitchers are so "comfortable" on the mound. Maybe thats true. And maybe some other GM will see that too. And $2.75M nowadays isn't really a king's ransom, is it.
