  1. I have to give some props to Bailey, he had alot of weight on his shoulders, but he came through.
  2. I remember when he batted against Mariano Rivera with people on base and a chance to make that game against Pettite interesting and the best pitch was the first one and Bradley let it go by. After that Rivera toyed with him. Its hard to pick on Bradley for letting a first pitch go by but Rivera was on the ropes at that time and patience might not have been the best strategy. Hindsight always 20/20 though.
  3. I say, why rush? Sure, maybe if we wouldve let him stay he wouldve eventually broken through but it does no harm for him to take it slowly. It may do harm for him to start too quickly though. Personally I think he was being too patient, which may be indicative of trying to please too much, which may be indicative of him not being ready attitudinally. Then again I may be way off base altogether.
  4. Meanwhile, Melancon's having a great start.
  5. It loves lobstah! Seriously though, I also deal with the age thing being a Spurs fan.
  6. People, year after year are always saying a players career is over when they get up their in age. When that player proves them wrong as Ortiz keeps on doing they do it again the next year until finally their prediction is proven correct. Then they say "see I told ya"! I think Ortiz is fired up to start and think that that will give him the motivation to have another great year, especially near the when the games count the most. He at least deserves a chance to try. To even suggest different is foolish in more ways than one.
  7. Well it would lessen the perception that his other great year was a fluke, is what Im saying. Its something to consider in the scheme of things. Also to be considered is his injuries for sure. However if he plays healthily all year, it could put make his injuries seem flukish instead. I feel having previous success in a certain system would make for alot of incentive for both the FO in resigning AND maybe Ells taking a lesser contract.
  8. What if Ells has another great year offensively? That would indicate a pattern of excellence and a good fit, something that may not happen with a replacement, even if the replacement was good in his previous team. My question is, what is Bradley's current contract like, and when does it expire? If Bradley wont get paid lots for awhile I say keep both.
  9. One of those seasons had the September collapse. I dont think that had anything to do with ST or the start of the regular season for that matter. Im not so sure it had anything to do with fried chicken either.
  10. Nava had the second highest OBP behind Ortiz and thats pretty impressive because I can understand pitchers walking Ortiz much more than Nava. If he really wanted to augment that stat though, he should steal more. I realize that he's probably not fast but he can use that as an element of surprise if he uses it sparingly enough but not as sparingly as usual.
  11. I agree. I dont know how the games were lost in previous ST's, but if we are ahead while the major league players were in it, we won as far as Im concerned. Seems to me that we lost many of these games later on with the minor leaguers in it. Maybe Farrell allowed the minor leaguers to sink or swim and merely wanted to evaluate them, the only chance he has to do that. Also, maybe he was dissapointed.
  12. I wonder if this was their plan all along and its just happening sooner than they thought. I dont think Gomes was ever meant to be a fulltimer considering the vast gap in numbers between LHP and RHP. Sure Nava would play the other side of the plate but it makes sense that they were thinking Bradley the whole time.
  13. Thats the sabremetrics philosophy though. Get on base so the big bats can bring em home. What Ive read, the stat nerds think its counterproductive to trade outs for base advancement, ie stealing, hit and run, and bunting. EDIT - Also consider that the reason the NL has won the last three WS is that the NL team has won the last three All Star games, thus ensuring their home field advantage. A horribly stupid rule if there ever was one that I would bet damn good money has determined AT LEAST one WS, probably more considering the AL teams were considered more talented.
  14. Well with that kind of logic, maybe its for the best that he didnt get signed.
  15. He only had one bad outing hasnt he? He had a 0.00 ERA before the game against Baltimore where he raised his avg to 4.50. Wheres the other bad outing? Did he get relieved with bases loaded and get rescued? If he got out of his own jam, I think we should hold judgement until he's had some more chances to redeem himself.
  16. Maybe so but I think we got most of the talent out the list of examples you provided, at least their peak. I would be glad to be wrong though, unless they play the Red Sox or Bruins.
  17. Yeah, no one saw that big unloading to the Dodgers coming (I dont think), and it took alot of balls. Because of that move, Im willing to wait and see how he does after it. I do question some of his moves before the big trade, most notably, Valentine, Bard as starter and getting rid of a personal fave who went on to continued success, Matt Albers. But as Cherington said, they have a plan and each move is now a part of a bigger picture which is something I dont think they did before.
  18. I agree with you more or less. I want at least good defense or pitch calling attached to some offense. My prediction is nothing but a gut feeling. I think Salty realizes who he is and what he is capable of and is saying to himself, "I need to do alot more offense to make me worth it, thats my only true talent". His defense at least in throwing out base runners will never b that good, he doesnt have the body. His pitch calling also seems to be bad but Im willing to throw all of last year away and call it an anomaly and give him and everyone a new start.
  19. Just saw Youk in a Yankees uniform for the first time. AHHH!!! MY EYES!!!
  20. Well, leading the club in HR's is definitely a good thing but with the position he fields, he needs to contribute more, be it with offense, defense or both. The problem with Salty last year, other than his D and maybe his pitch calling, is that he did most of his damage in the first half. Thats the wrong half. I think he has it in him to up that average and keep the power numbers, and of course do it consistently throughout the year. His defense sucks but if it can suck less, thats that much better. Also I dont think you can count the second half of last season as a barometer for anyone. Its hard to compete when you know everything is going to s***.
  21. Saltalamacchia is going to have a darn good season (offensively of course) and make everyone feel embarrased.
  22. Excuse me, I meant I wonder what others saw in him that was intelligent.
  23. How was he intelligent? Seemed like he threw fastballs until the batter got used to the speed and then hit it.
  24. Can you imagine if he finds his old form? This bullpen is already great, on paper.
  25. But he did and he's no dummy so I have to feel that the first comment "Ill always be a Red Sock" was genuine and was ready to take the hits. And I agree that "proud to be a Yank" is him trying to smooth things out a little. It might be guilt but it also may be love. I hate the Yanks but when it comes to Yanks or retirement, I cant hate an ex-Red Sock for taking the Yanks.
