  1. I dont see anyone mentioning Youks lates comment about "always being a Red Sock" but I think it was cool and him joining the Yanks isnt the same as when Clemens and Damon did it. It isnt even as bad as when Wade Boggs did it. Youk did it for a job. I wish him all the luck in the world except for winning.
  2. Yes, go Lavs!!! Salty's club leading home run stats are not enough to compensate for the shoddy D and pitch calling. A big part of Salt's HR productuion came in the beginning of the year which is the wrong time if youre going to pick a time.
  3. Pedro was pretty damn good for being such a little guy so I have to think that he has some valuable advice to share beyond natural talent. Him and V-Tek together could be a great asset.
  4. Yeah but letting him go, we wouldnt be able to take advantage of a catcher hungry league right now. I think itll be worth it in the long run.
  5. I think signing Salty was smart because his power hitting talent may still be on the upswing (no pun intended) and if he starts out good like he did last year, he may turn out to be great trade bait, and we wont have to pay that 4.5.
  6. Yeah, in order to see if a trade was a good one or not, its always helpful to see the acquired player....play.
  7. What needs to happen is that we need to have some of the players that have been suckin to do good again, like Lester, Lackey, Buch. Im not so sure that will happen but so far it seems as if Cherington is banking on it. The good thing is that Lester and Buch are young and Lackey mightve had a bum arm.
  8. If Els has another good year then he will get great offers for sure.
  9. Lavarnway needs to get good and now. I would love to see him live up to the promise he gave us at the end of 2011. I think for a tall guy he's surprisingly agile behind the plate unlike Salty.
  10. Maybe Ross will be given the starting role. I took getting him to be Tek 2.
  11. But how do you balance that against not signing long term deals? Great players want long term deals. Also I think its obvious that the FO knows that they have the potential for a trade with our excess of catchers, center fielders (Vic & Els) and relief pitchers and are waiting for the right player and right deal.
  12. I think going for amount of wins vs the division is a sabermetrics thing. Its something more concrete that you can figure mathmatically that you cant with topping the division because you wont know what the records will be. Maybe the win total needs to be higher.
  13. How can anybody plan for success by aiming for second? Will they be dissapointed if they get first? Hell no! All Epstein was saying is that they need, at least 90-95 wins, it doesnt mean he wasnt aiming for more. The most fair playoff format is the one that will never come back and thats the two pennant winners playing each other in the WS.
  14. Ditto! And a gold glove award to boot. Although if Napoli goes we are missing all those righty green monster crushers I thought we were going to have, ie Napoli, Ross.
  15. I guess this definitely ends the Bard question.
  16. I think they are stockpiling trade material. I just read that the Sox are interested in the Pirates closer. As for Salty, I think he's better trade bait than Lavarnway and with Ross as primary catcher, Lav has a good tutor. Having said that I also like the righty/lefty thing of Ross and Salty.
  17. I was watching MLB network and they said that the dichotemy between Hamiltons hitting when it came to good vs bad pitchers was one of the biggest of all time, in other words he's really great against bad pitchers but tails off fast when it comes to good pitching. This is a telling stat.
  18. I agree totally. Just blindly throwing money at the seemingly best players isnt a good way to build a team. As you said San Fran wins WS twice in three years and in between Cardinals. Look at the Rangers, they didnt win the WS but were in it and Hamilton is the only real dominant player. I think the Red Sox realize this and are trying to be smarter.
  19. Get Swisher, C. Ross, make the Ellsbury + catcher trade for quality arm and Ill be excited about the up coming season. Having said that we're getting a little too right side dominant for batting.
  20. Supposedly Ross is excellent in this area.
  21. I dont understand that thinking, seeing that Beckett is not a part of it anymore. We need someone at least to take his place.
  22. I never was a fan of Bard even when people were praising him. I remember him being a crucial part of the Red Sox collapse the season before last. If all you throw is 100 mph, eventually batters will catch up and it seemed thats how they hit off him after he walked a whole bunch of people. Im not Cherington bashing, I like his moves so far this offseason, but it is telling that after Papelbon went to Phillies, the supposed closer to follow all of a sudden becomes a starting pitcher and bombs miserably. EDIT - Ooops, I just caught your last sentence where it says, "By the same token, I don't believe either he or the Sox felt he would bear up under the pressure of closing". So if thats the case they shouldve left him where he was. Hind sight always 20/20.
  23. I dont think getting a young, big name is going to happen because there isnt much in the free agent market, and we dont have much to trade except money. Having said that, is it a coincidence that the starting pitching went to hell after Varitek left, and will that be rectified with Ross?
  24. Speaking of catching, Ive had a couple of thoughts going around in my head. One is, how come no one talks about Mauer, isnt he a free agent? Second is why arent people giving more love to Salty? He IS the Red Sox's home run leader of 2012. He's also a switch hitter so could replace Ross according to what hand the pitcher pitches with. Yeah his defense isnt great and maybe even his pitch calling but still.
  25. Berkman is one of my favorite players. Having said that, he reminds me alot of Youkilis. Wouldnt Youk be the smarter choice? They both have health issues but Youk is younger and has the Fenway experience.
