  1. new, naive, whatever - kind of the same thing - that's me I guess. How about this stunner for you - I absolutely think that having a dominant pitcher even if for one day per week will make the rest of this team way better. Confidence and the way you look at things in general makes a huge difference in my little world. I kind of felt the same way about the loss of Kimbrel even though it looked as though he had started to decline. Any good starting pitcher has to feel better if they have that guy on the backend who can pick you and the rest of the team up. having Sale underperform and not having that rare guy in the bullpen that everybody expects to get the job done has hurt this team more than the statistics indicate that it has. Unmeasurable things still make a difference. (in my little world - lol)
  2. ...and that's ok. Your choice of wording - "make Dombrowski look worse in my eyes" - implies to me that you didn't nor do you like him much. That is ok as well. I don't think that any normal person would be too excited about anyone signing a big contract and then not performing to the expected standards that they have set. I'm a Dombrowski supporter and a huge Sale fan obviously and I'm ok with that.
  3. Ain't that a fact! And the better news is that Sale finally got paid for what he has been and likely will continue to do for some time. We'll get to see now whether or not his performance last night has any carry over effect on the rest of the team. I do think just like you do that if these guys think that they have a legit stopper leading the way, they all might play better. Confidence makes a difference.
  4. I think that it is safe to say that we all have been and probably still are concerned about Sale's performance this year. He did look great last night though. Just one game but reason to really be hopeful. Obviously I am a huge Sale guy. There is nothing that I dislike about the guy. He works hard, he does not quit, and he owns it. I heard one criticism on here that disgusts me - the idea that his paycheck was somehow more important to him than the team's overall performance. (NOT BY YOU). IMO that is absolutely ridiculous. We are fortunate to have the future hall of fame on our side. Acquiring him was the price of doing business. No one should be at all concerned about the cost it took. it was the right thing to do at the right time to do it. No one repeat no one should be bitching about the affect it had on the farm system.
  5. Not sure really why anyone could think that shutting chris sale down would be a good idea. He has not pitched as he has in the past for sure but if he is healthy he still gets it done. He'll figure things out but if he doesn't he still is an asset for any team.
  6. pretty much i'd say pitching be it starter or bullpen is not simply about quantity.
  7. ty - gotta keep on movin on my friend.
  8. Cliff Claven maybe
  9. Sal Maglie
  10. I understand that I am a big time homer when it comes to this guy Hitch but I really just don't get it with some people. They flipped the switch and are ready to put this future Hall of Fame pitcher out to pasture. I say just give him some time and he'll figure things out. He is the purist type of gamer that everyone wants on their team. He is much tougher on himself than anyone posting here. From my front row seat it is a lot easier to criticize i guess than it is to compliment.
  11. I have been a huge supporter of Brian Johnson but I would say that it is time to let both of these boys go. If you want fillers, use someone else. I think that we all know what they have and in all honesty it just isn't enough.
  12. Nice - i like you even more than i did before. Now you know that that is hard for me to say Mr. Espnoza.
  13. I'm just going to hold the line and say that anyone giving up Chris Sale is not being rational. he'll be back so to speak.
  14. Guess I missed something. I haven't been too interested in reading much of what has been posted lately. Did the people in charge suggest to Chris Sale that he would be a better pitcher if he hadn't renegotiated his contract? By the way, I get a kick out of Charles Barkley. I like the guy but wisdom isn't the word that pops into my head when I hear from him.
  15. I think that I agree with just about everything here.
  16. likely true
  17. Is this a suggestion that Sale is more concerned with the money he makes as opposed to his performance? It's a joke right? nice one - lol
  18. I also do not think that this man is done. He throws the ball to hard and the movement on the slider remains. I would never bet against a man with his type of passion. he is having a bad year - I get that - but much of the criticism read about him on this site is ridiculous. Ultimately I think that he will earn his paycheck.
  19. my post was in response to Jung's latest.
  20. So I think that it is safe to say that in your opinion only the Red Sox have just two players who are actually "team players". Don't think that I can buy that one at all. Sometimes the best plans based on last year or what the statistics say should happen, just don't happen. This team is sad to watch on that one I definitely agree.
  21. You are so so right on this one but it is also imo the beauty of sports in general. Not everything is predictable. There are so many intangibles that figure in to success in any sport. It is always fun to predict things based on past performance but until the games begin no one can say with any certainty what is going to happen. This year's team has been a huge disappointment - who could have figured that one.
  22. Cora is a good coach who isn't going anywhere just yet. I just have to find it amusing that many people here wanted to anoint him as the best ever on a one year team performance. I've heard so much about small sample sizes but I guess when the mood hits it's ok? I'm actually ok with anyone feeling this way. I do still think that what Williams did with what he had to work with in 1967 stands out as every bit a remarkable though.
  23. I get this and I understand you. I like reading what you post. I am interested in the metrics and advanced stats but not my passion. I will rely on people like you to keep me informed. I just don't happen to like the condescension that often comes from others simply because it is not a shared interest. And oh don't they get angry when I tell them that it is fairly likely that I do in fact know more about the actual game than they do.
  24. I respect the interests of all people but her assessment of who should use advanced stats and who shouldn't and when is ridiculous. Being on a baseball forum does absolutely not require someone to be immersed in the language of advanced stats or whatever. I will also add that personally I would never argue against the use of advanced analytics. I'm pretty sure that there are many people who have no interest at all in advanced analytics but yet know more about the actual game of baseball than I will ever know. This site does not have many regular posters and my guess would be that if a thorough knowledge of advanced stats was required before participation, there would be less. I think that there is a place on a baseball forum for just about anybody who wants to talk baseball.
