  1. When did people start complicating the game more than it already is? 19 errors at second base means the lad has work to do if he is going to be an infielder. People can spin it any way they want to. If they don't like fielding % as a stat, that is fine. Garciaparra got to a pant load more balls than many other shortstops but he screwed up the routine play way too often. Moncada needs work on his fielding - maybe throwing - I don't, know but anybody trying to argue that one just likes to argue.
  2. No one has even come close to suggesting that all errors are created equally. Most of us actually know from experience all about the guys who get to more balls than the others. Kimmi - come on - the player who doesn't get to many balls is no player who gets to the next level unless he just tears the cover off of it and doesn't play a particularly taxing position. 19 errors i n 63 games at second base tells us that he needs work on his fielding, throwing, or whatever.
  3. Moncada has a lot going for him for sure - youth - great speed - instincts - a little pop. He might be on the untradeable list with E-Rod and Bogaerts. Fielding wise not so much - 19 errors in 63 games at second base means work needs to be done no matter who does the scoring.
  4. John Farrell is a good man. It's treatable. He will get through it.
  5. Go after the big gun 1. Cueto or Price 2. Trade for the next best available arm (all names should be on the table except E-Rod 3. Rodriguez. the 4 and 5 slots could be filled with any combination of Porcello, Miley, Buccholtz, Owens, or Wright. Kelley plus 2 or 3 move to the pen. The best starting 5 should start. If Owens and Rodriguez are in the group then that is the way it should work. Fix the major fielding issues left field, first base for sure and then off you go. If you fire Farrell and staff then don't play little promotion games and keep Cherington. A lot of coaching has to do with making the tough moves.
  6. I'm not a huge Farrell fan by any means but it is just another attempt to lay blame at someone's feet. He is the easy target but if he goes, his coaching staff should go with him. I get the fact that people are frustrated as well. Regardless of what the stats say - regardless of what the scouts said, the players brought in are not as good as everyone thought that they would be. I think that anyone could have reasonable expectations for professional athletes based on past performance no matter who the head coach is.
  7. Anyone who pigeonholes themselves into either group I guess I would think to be a fool. But you see I also am a liberal Republican or a conservative Democrat. I don't like groups although the fraternity I was in was great. Sadly they were thrown off campus. I feel badly for anyone who can't try to see both sides of any argument. Over the years, personally I would say that I have learned much more from the people who have disagreed with me as opposed to those who have agreed with my points of view. I've enjoyed the civil debates I've been a part of here. I don't like the bitching but I understand that I can get caught up in it as much as anyone else. I don't think the Red Sox recent poor play can be attributed to any one group. It is equally shared by all. I would hate to be the person or group assigning blame.
  8. ok - I'm afraid what all of it says to me is that we aren't looking at a quick fix. We aren't just a few moves away. Without major changes made by people who know what they are doing we are talking years. I hope it goes like this - pitching - defense -offense. They are going to have to push the reset button.
  9. Easy there - Francis - what's up with that? You telling me to lighten up? You inclined to a little overreaction are you? It's all good.
  10. I'm guessing that slightly hypocritical translates about as well seemed to agree with him. What I will say is that when anyone says anything on here that might slightly be considered disparaging toward the stat folk, it seems to create a major s*** storm. Why do you think that is? A little defensive - a little insecure? I kind of think that it takes the best of both worlds to make. Although you couldn't prove that based on the current Red Sox roster and performance.
  11. The Red Sox organization is proving that it doesn't matter what you do and where your points of emphasis lie, it can still be screwed up. Are other organizations just better at data collection and scouting?
  12. Maybe Moncada - there is no member of the current Red Sox organization that should be considered safe from a possible trade. the only question would be who is doing the trading. Hate to see something wasted. Maybe Moncada
  13. ? What - I don't get what you are saying. Should I have said - If you are simply a stat geek then you are a fool + If you are just a scout trusting geek you are a foo? Or was your comment directed toward my slightly hypocritical "Amen brother"? I'll try to be a little clearer. I do get a kick out of you though.
  14. Useless seems like too strong a word. If I am looking for a hitter and the only infomation that I have to go on is a high batting average and lots of RBI's, my guess would be that that player looks like a pretty good hitter.
  15. Amen brother . I'll drink to that - here's to you.
  16. If you are simply one or the other, you are a fool. There is no place for someone who knows virtually nothing about the game other than what the stats tell them. There is no place in the game for someone who refuses to use all available tools to build a roster.
  17. I agree here for sure. It is becoming a bit of a trend for them which does scare me.
  18. I agree with you for the most part here(How about that!). I probably do think that he might be a bit slower than you do but that is all opinion. I did have similar feelings toward Manny but Hanley is no Manny.
  19. There is no question that we learn much more about ourselves and the people around us when we lose. Life is good when you win for sure. Without using the malcontent word or even suggesting that he might be a negative influence on anybody, basically because I don't that he might be or is, I will just say that he looked a little to layed back as a young player in Portland. I think lazy was the word many people used to describe him. Regardless about what anybody thinks about him and his personal characteristics, How is helping us and how do you see him helping us going forward? If Ortiz was retiring, I could see it. Since he isn't retiring, the fact that Ramirez has to field a position looks like it hurts our team.
  20. I really don't think that Ramirez is a malcontent. I am inclined to think that he is lazy and probably not too bright. He might be a genius. I just don't know that he is. What I do know is that if the choice is stupid or just uncoachable, I will take stupid any day. Stupid and coachable can at least be worked with. Now - once again, he might be brilliant. It just doesn't look that way. If he could make plays adequately at any position, I could see his value. If he can't field and he isn't the dh, he isn't helping us at all.
  21. i am sure that I was in a selectively small group. We saw him play. We heard the grumblings. We basically felt that he was lazy and we were happy to see him go. We never questioned his talent level. i believe that he creates more problems than he does solutions. Attitude aside, I don't see a place for him until Ortiz is gone. Sandoval is a third baseman. We needed a third baseman.
  22. sk - i think I mis-remember Ortiz and Pedroia turning into goons. I am certainly not saying that the Ramirez trade wasn't a good one for the Sox . It was a good one. It doesn't change the fact that people questioned what Ramirez was all about. I don't remember people shedding any tears when he left town.
  23. I understand what you are saying. I will say that when Hanley Ramirez was traded from Boston, his attitude and overall work ethic was a major topic of discussion for the fan base at that time. We saw him quite a bit in Portland. I would be surprised if the people running the front office didn't have discussions about his overall approach. It doesn't make any difference now how much Ben was or was not aware of. I get the fact that you support Kimmi with respect to much that she says. I like her too and even agree with her sometimes. I'm just not a big Hanley Ramirez fan and I think that it was a mistake to bring him back.
