    There is a good chance that if all energies and $ were put into acquiring pitching, both starting and bullpen help, this team would be ok. First base may or may not be an issue. Really think that Shaw has proven that he can play a little. 8 home runs in fairly limited action is something to think about. In Portland, you have Sam Travis, one of the most productive players in our minor leagues. It would be nice to see a bat like Ramirez playing that position but not at all if he can't field it. I don't think that they were being patient as much as they were being stubborn by continually sending Ramirez and Napoli up to the plate. If they try Hanley at first and it doesn't look good, here is hoping that it won't take them a half a season to figure it out. Right now it is definitely about the pitching.

    No - of course not. Allowing Napoli to remain in the lineup for as long as they did and by playing Ramirez it did look a little suspicious.

    hey - how about me saying this. The stats say he is a well above average ss. Not even close.

    Bogaerts is one of the top shortstops in the game today. He has played more games, gotten to more balls, and made fewer errors than almost all of them. We all know that he stays at short. We are not weak up the middle. Since Ramirez has been out, our defense has gotten substantially better. Imagine that. I still think that there is a pretty fair chance that he will not be with us next season.

    It's a conundrum. What to do with Hanley Ramirez. Send him on vacation until the big boy retires.

    Since I might be have been considered one of the old stat as opposed to the new stat guys, i have been trying to upgrade my image. I can't find anything new or old that tells me that XB isn't one of the top 5 ss in the game today.

    JBJ - yes I know it is good to have production from the 9 hole- yes I get that maybe it helps him from a pressure perspective. Blah blah blah. Eventually that bat moves up. i'm a believer.

    Nice post. I feel a little sorry for Hanley Ramirez. The winning has been going on with him not in the lineup. They might actually need his bat someday but for the time being not so much. Having JBJ emerge into the projected player he has been for me has been a wonderful story. With each game he plays, his hitting ceiling seems to keep moving into an area that many of us felt that he had the potential to get to. XB put the work in this past off-season, and watching him becoming one of the best in both leagues at short is huge feel good story. They certainly have some work to do but the youth movement has been fun. How about the big boy? Shaughnessy may not see him as a HOFamer but I guess I do. Over the years, he has meant as much to this franchise as any that I can remember. I have had the great pleasure of watching Ted (arguably the greatest hitter of all time) and Captain Carl. I don't care if Ortiz ever touches another glove, he would get my vote. By the way, I would also be happy if Hanley Ramirez never picked up another glove of any kind for the Sox.

    Bogaerts is becoming one of the better fielding and better hitting shortstops in the game. His range as well as his throwing have improved vastly. He will be our ss for a long time. The chances of Vazquez and Swihart splitting time at the catcher position are at best slim and more than likely none. If Vazquez comes back healthy, one is going to be moved. Part of a package that is going to net us that second good pitcher that we need.

    I don't see trading Miley. He gives us just what a good 4 or 5 could give. He is healthy and on occasion has pitched some beauties. Porcello, Rrodriguez, Miley I hope are in. I would be perfectly fine if two new guys were brought in and Kelly got moved to the pen. If they bring Buccholtz back, it will be interesting to see how he is used. Even if he is healthy (as healthy as he can be ) it isn't a sure thing that he is going to be anything better than average. It won't be about the money if they decide to bring him back or not. They might just decide to go in a different direction. i really don't see Dombrowski starting the new season with the same starting 5 minus Masterson. I'm still going with - 2 new guys - Porcello - Rodriguez - and either Miley or Kelly.

    I think that signing him made much more sense than The Ramirez signing. We needed a third baseman. It wasn't going to be Wil Middlebrows for sure. In hindsight maybe it does look like other options would have been better but he isn't the reason this team has had such a miserable year. Could we have done better - probably but who knew.

    With that being said, they raised ticket prices grossly as well. I won't be there until I like the product just a bit more but I don't think that they will miss me. For many people today, if you are in Boston, you catch a game whether you are a fan or not. It's is close to being a national monument I guess. A real red Sox fan to me tends to be a lifer.

Rodriguez 5. fighting it out Miley Kelly Buccholtz if he is back Owens Johnson Wright I'm really hoping that Dombrowski does not choose to go with the same old scenario because of contracts and their size. I don't think that he will.

    He does have his work cut out for him but i do think that we will see some additions and/or changes that at least will look like they make sense. We will have at least one starter who has a successful track record to go with Porcello and E-Rod. After that - who knows. Miley- Buccholtz-Kelly- Owens-Johnson-Wright. I still think that he will add two.

    I agree as well as long as a couple of other things happen- Buccholtz - Porcello - Miley - Kelly - Rodriguez If that is the starting rotation going in to next year, it won't make any difference at all where Owens, Johnson , or anybody else winds up. Sad song that we have heard all year. I would hope and doubt that that will be the case. Truly expect there to be 2 additions to the rotation.

    If I had one game that we needed to win right now, believe it or not, i would start Porcello. That being said, Rodriguez would be up next. i'm not nuts about saying that with respect to a 22? year old kid who may or may not become better than a middle of the rotation arm. Too many maybes, ifs, and hope sos with the rest of the bunch. I truly hope that it doesn't boil down to having Owens in the starting rotation early next year. i don't think that it will. I have faith in Dombrowski's knowledge of the game. i don't think that a rotation featuring Buccholtz and Kelly is going to get off the ground. I agree with you about depth and if we pick up a couple of pitchers in the off-season, at least one of those two will help add some. Possibly i am a dreamer but I really don't think that Dombrowski will go with the same old arms hoping that they might be better next year.

    Let's see - E-Rod to AAA- you thinking that we will see an entire new starting rotation next year? I understand all of the bitterness. i am biter too but really - who has pitched better than him since his call up. Hang your hat on Kelly and Miley ? Not me! !. Free agent - Price 2. Trade 3. Rodriguez 4. Porcello 5,6, whatever - let them fight it out.

    Agree here - no question. It looks so far as though Dombrowski is using some common sense. No one on the planet truly felt that Ramirez should be left in the outfield. I think he helped the coaching staff by actually saying what anyone with a baseball brain already knew. He knows we need two pitchers - real pitchers. Not two more to add to the proverbial landfill of veteran players looking for a home. It will be interesting to see what he does with Buccholtz. He won't pay him to sit and occupy space no matter how good he might on occasion actually be. Porcello is in Rodriguez is in the rest really are up for grabs. i don't think that anything is going to be given to anyone because of a contract. I'm curious to know what you think about Betts possibly playing some right field. Could that be a trade audition? I hope not but you never know.

    I'm no big fan of Hanley Ramirez by any means, but I do think that he was placed in a very uncomfortable position. Paid well - for sure I get that part. I'm just not sure that he is as much of a clown as it looks like he is. If he simply had been asked to hit the ball as in the DH, I think that things would be different. There doesn't appear to be any place for him to play right now on this team. I would like to see him at first if he can prove that he can play the position. If he is healthy they should be able to figure that out fairly well in the games that they have left. I haven't seen or really heard anything that can be substantiated to indicate that he is lazy or a bad team mate or a problem in the clubhouse. It boils down to whether or not there is any way that he can help this team win moving forward. If it doesn't look like he can, then he has to go.
