  1. I think that you are right about much of the criticism directed at Ben. I have to say though that I would be very surprised if it becomes a win at all cost philosophy all of a sudden. Just need to make better decisions overall.
  2. I do not blame Ben actually for anything that he did. I don't think blame is the right world. Ben is no longer here and I hope that he is happy. I am glad that we appear headed in a little different direction.
  3. Is he healthy? Victorino was one of my favorite players but if he isn't able to play he wouldn't help much.
  4. It looks like if they ever really had this as an over riding philosophy (which I doubt they did) they have amended it a bit to try to make the team better. I'm sure that their preference remains to sign shorter term contracts with younger players. Sounds like what everybody would like to do in a fantasy world. Looks to me like they want to be a better team this time around and are willing to do what they need to do. All the better for us.
  5. Tomase picks and chooses very well. Putting faith in this piece of writing, a person has to assume that the current Sox situation is the same as last year. That the free agent market is the same as well. It isn't whether anyone likes it or not. Saying that you would not pursue the best pitchers available because of a team philosophy when you have the funds would be ridiculous. Team needs this time around say that we need to go after the best we can. If we can get two of them, even better. Probably won't happen, but it would not bother me and I do not believe that it would hurt the future development of this team at all. Just my opinion. Also, I am willing to give Ben all of the credit that he deserves for the young players that we have in our system but with respect to his free agent signings - not so much. If he gets credit for the farm, he takes the blame for the free agents he signed and didn't sign.
  6. Tomase - Not one of my favorites. I doubt he writes very much what he believes. I've felt for a long time that stirring the pot is his about his major goal. Interesting - yes. He might even encourage people to think about things on occasion. It is a definite skill to write to a perspective that you know you don't truly believe in and make people think that you do. Lots of opinions but very few facts coming from him.
  7. Absolutely!
  8. You bet!
  9. Does that mean that you think he might come through in the clutch as well?
  10. I know - my attempt at being a wise ass. I really remember it. The sparks were flying. I think that things will heat up soon again. I'm sure that you saw the same article that I did talking about who our two biggest improvements are going to be this year. Pablo and Hanley.
  11. I like either one. I do like Price more. I think that they would both be fine. I don't know if people think that it is a good thing to think that Boston is a special place to play in for lots of reasons or not. I love New England and I love our teams but I never considered it to be worth bragging rights to think of us as just being nasty enough to keep some people from wanting to play here. My guess is that lots of other teams and cities upon a closer look are just as tough to play in. You don't have to have a "special type of toughness" to play in Boston. You have to have that special type of toughness just to get to the big leagues in general. Greinke would be just fine here. Once again, he doesn't seem to lose much. I am with you about the draft pick. That would hurt. Ultimately I am betting on the $ talking. I don't think that the image of what the city is in anyone's mind, will play that much of a role.
  12. Price and Grienke in that order for me. I don't think that you go wrong going with either one. I like Price's age, his fastball, and his cockiness. Grienke is just flat out good. The detractors would point to Price's struggles in the post season. Meaningless dribble. You got to get there first. For Grienke, it seems to be about his past issues with anxiety and depression. Some think he could not handle the scrutiny of the Boston press and the Boston fanbase. Joke - they play baseball in a few other fairly raucous places where the press and fans have been known to be just as obnoxious us we can be. He wins a lot more than he loses also. We tend to like guys like that.
  13. Miley is the kind of mid rotation pitcher everyone wants and needs. You don't move a guy like Miley unless someone wants him real bad. As in big time overpay bad.
  14. Seems like we had more to talk about last year at this time.
  15. I think that that is a good question. I really believe that you go with your 5 (probably 5) best coming out of the spring. Now, if they all look about the same, Rodriguez would get the nod from me. Youth be served. All that being said, if Rodriguez isn't in that top 5, my guess is that we will be in for a very long year once again. I think professional sports would be better all around if more emphasis was placed on actual performance as opposed contract, contract, length, and potential. I hope very much that both Buccholz and Kelly come into the spring healthy and strong. I also don't think that it will affect Rodriguez's status.
  16. I really don't think that that is what the arguement (conversation) is really all about. I think that it really is about who of those 3 gives us the best chance to win games on a regular basis. In my mind, it is very clearly E-Rod. Considering that, IMO - It would be absolute stupidity to send him to AAA to start the season.
  17. I think that there might be even better options than Hanley after next season. He might wind up being the one. If he is with Boston this year, it will be a big year for him. If he continues to be prone to injury, and can't get it done daily, I think that they will cut bait with him. I'm hoping that he comes out fast in the spring and proves to be what many think he has been and can be. I'm skeptical by nature.
  18. The whole concept of dubbing around with could be players when you have other options available is absolute ********. I am really hopeful that we don't see that this spring. If Joe Kelly and Clay Buchholtz aren't 100% ready to go, I really hope that they are the ones somewhere else.
  19. They very well might start Owens at the AAA level. Based on the spring, that very well might make sense. With respect to Rodriguez, we do absolutely disagree.
  20. Each of these cases has to be looked in a very individual way. If Rodriguez played a role on an already strong staff, of course the rationale would make sense. He doesn't. He was arguably the best we had last year. In his particular case, sending him down would show a lack of any kind of sense. Some might even consider it stupidity. Of course a lot could change between now and the spring.
  21. His reputation defines him. I don't expect any transformation. He is ours at least for the time being. I'm going to be hoping for the best. I am going to be a little cautious with my expectations though. When healthy, he has not always pitched like an ace. We have seen flashes of brilliance. I think we take what he gives.
  22. I agree with your take on Buchholz. Owens will get a chance but is he going to be the one for us going forward? A solid mid-rotation guy maybe.
  23. i know that you are not surprised by Cafardo's findings. Neither am I. If he hits the hell out of it this year, he might be a serviceable dh going forward. If he doesn't have a very good season, I'm guessing they move him no matter what.
  24. I get through that pretty well by looking at the number of games pitched and balls thrown during the regular season. He is a horse. You have to get to the big party before you can win it. The addition of Price and some more work on that bullpen and we will at least be heading in the right direction.
  25. I would trade just about any of our so called young prospects right now for the "right deal or deals". Trading unproven young talent for proven young talent ? Not much of a downside for me there. That being said, I would be hesitant to give away too much for someone whose durability as well as attitude might come with question marks. No question that if he is healthy and could stay healthy, that Fernandez has the goods. There are concerns there though that would make me push a little harder for the free agent market. I still like Price.
