  1. Ben would be the guy you keep in your organization but don't give the keys to the city to. He did a great job at what he does best.
  2. I'm not sure that they are better options - Travis Shaw and Sam Travis. Of the two, it's anybody's guess. They both could be good options. Shaw - a little more power than both Swihart or Travis but from a pure hitter and first baseman - Sam Travis. It really is just an opinion - I don't want to see them trade either Betts or Bogaerts and Swihart just looks like the most valuable piece that could be moved without hurting us too much. I certainly wouldn't trade a player with his type of potential unless the return was real good as in that top of the rotation young arm. it looks like we have the players to cover both his potential both at the plate and in the field. To get something special i think that they will have to give up something special. If they decide to keep Swihart and move him to lets say first base, that is all good. If they do that, and still want to trade for a quality pitcher, I think the targets are going to be Betts or Bogaerts. I don't want to see that happen.
  3. I hate to appear to be the malcontent here but I think that our options at first base will be better without trying to turn Swihart into one. His biggest value will be either behind the plate or as a trading chip.
  4. I agree with you but did not see that in your original post.
  5. If you consider the whole package, you are probably right. I don't see him ever being the equal to Vasquez in terms of just doing all of the things a good catcher does from a defensive perspective. Swihart will get better but having watched a small sample of both there is no question who I would rather have behind the plate. Moving Swihart to first might be an option but looking down the line, I think first base is covered very well. I like the kid but I still think of all our tradeables he carries a lot of clout. If Vasquez is healthy, and Swihart is part of a package that provides us with a pitching improvement, we will not miss him.
  6. Her comment was that she keeps hearing that if he continues to improve that he will become the better of the two catchers. I have not heard that and am thinking that I might have missed something. I try to follow the news but I have not heard this. I am pretty sure that Kimmi doesn't feel this way. I wonder who does. If Vasquez stays in baseball, I don't think that anyone questions which of the two will be the better defensive catcher. Swihart will get better for sure but I doubt if he gets to the level of a Vasquez.
  7. He's got his hands full. If he doesn't trade some of our wanna be starters, I guess I would like to see some of them recycled to the bullpen. Kelly would go to the pen first for me. I don't hate Buchholz, but I am sick of hearing how good he could be. I want gritty and tough from at least most of our starters.
  8. Where did you read or hear that the thinking was that Swihart would become a better defensive catcher than Vaazquez?
  9. I'm really hoping that they go for two real pitchers. Not the kind that have potential. The real deals this time. One through free agency and one through a trade.
  10. If the club decides to acquire pitching through trade and they go after a good one, it will cost someone major league ready. Swihart fits the bill. He fits it very well if Vasquez is healthy and ready to go. You have to take a chance somewhere to get better on the mound. A Vasquez who hits .250 or below will more than make up for any hitting lack with his glove. Swihart is a nice young player and they may decide to keep him but if the trade route is the one they want to go, he will be target.
  11. Sam Travis continues to hit in the AFL- In the future, first base won't be a problem with him as well as Travis Shaw. The chances of at least one of them making it looks really good. Travis won't give them a lot of power on the corner but it is very likely that he will hit and hit well.
  12. Amen brother
  13. They make the talksox world go round. There is no shortage of them here for sure. I think it is safe to say that we all share in the fun.
  14. I hear you. I worked at a number of factories up here doing many different jobs while going to school. I met and worked beside some of the most honest hardworking people I have ever known. I'm glad I was raised the way I was. You got up and you went to work. You did the job. You didn't get there late and you didn't leave early.
  15. thank you - every day wasn't great but I think we did what we supposed to be doing in the grand scheme of things. I was lucky. I never saw it as a job. Our school was my home away from home for many years.
  16. I was told that I was one of the good ones. My wife taught phys. ed. I think that we got the job done. All good.
  17. I'm good with the fact that he has been recognized for his excellent play this year. If all of the stats say that there are some who performed better in the field, that is ok. I like him for the work that he put in and would hate to see him moved. He probably has a pretty good idea as to what his fielding shortcomes might be. If there any, I bet he attempts to address them this off season. If he is a fixture for us at short, i am a happy guy.
  18. Great news - Not bad for a kid who a year ago had no range and an inaccurate arm. What a year!
  19. So - Let me see. my take on this is that I'm cynical and that I might view people who work hard and sacrifice as nothing special. None of that is true but the beauty of a forum is that you get to say what you want to right. Nice take on my words. Now you want to get into a great run your mouth debate that's ok. Here is one for you - I don't think that being GM of a major league baseball franchise carries any more significance than being a good classroom teacher. Judging from your comments, you don't agree. It is pretty clear that you disagree with this. That's ok. It's my opinion. It's your right.
  20. Like I said just my opinion. Not a question at all about how hard somebody works.
  21. This is a very true statement. Very very sad but true. Some people just don't seem able to play in the environments that we have created. The intelligent ones, who have a place somewhere else, never come here.
  22. If he was in fact actually teaching phys. ed on a full time basis in some little school somewhere, he would at least have the satisfaction of knowing that he was making a real positive contribution to society. Being the GM of an organization in the entertainment business doesn't exactly put him on a special pedestal for me. Doesn't matter what kind of job he did or does. Just my opinion though - I feel the same way about most of the professional athletes i cheer for. I will continue to be a fan but they play a game for a living that we pay dearly to watch. Good for them - I'll have a beer in their honor tonight.
  23. I agree with your post but i still don't know if anyone can guess at what JBJ's ceiling might be. That is and has been part of the allure. A little more full time play for someone (maybe us) and we might really get a clearer picture of who he is. That being said, he resides in an outfield with another one whose ceiling is anybody's best guess too - Castillo. Big question mark here as well. All we really know for sure is that he is more expensive than Bradley.
  24. I agree - A very good post. Too nice a guy to be beaten to death by the burdens of this particular job.
