  1. This is a tough one. In general, I agree - all things being fairly equal - best arm in right at Fenway. Lynn covered a tremendous amount of ground in cf and Evans was just one of the best I have ever seen. I would be very happy with Betts in center and JBJ in right but in all honesty I think that I am happier with JBJ as the everyday center fielder I think. Great problem to have.
  2. I agree with much of what you have said. But, if you know for a fact that Hanley Ramirez causes no clubhouse problems and is not lazy, I would like to know where you get your information. Normally where there is smoke there is fire. I hope that you are right about him. If you have some inside info about this one, I think that we would all be happy. I guess rumors have just followed Hanley for most of his career.
  3. We do disagree. I'm ok with that.
  4. There are a few benefits. Keeps a few people employed and serves to piss off players like Pedroia who really could give a crap about what any of the projections say about how he might or might not perform. A motivated Pedroia is good for us so I hope that he keeps hearing about how he is clearly entering the twilight of his career. Also - even though I am pretty sure that it isn't going to happen - I would be curious to see how Sandoval's overall play would be affeected by his 2 adays as well as a big time weight loss. He might actually present a pleasant surprise as well. You have to think that his weight gain has been at least a little responsible for his downward spiral.
  5. You're right here. Interesting part is that everybody has a theory as to why he wanted to up the K total. Most people seem to want to blame the coaching staff. Porcello is a big boy. He gets most of the blame from me. Hope he settles in and does what he is capable of doing without trying to do any more.
  6. I like to see if the projections agree with my own. They are just pretty much entertainment for me. Just like all of the projected stats. I'm not in a position to have to use them and I'm glad of that. Box scores really are just as much fun for me. I want to watch the games, follow my favorites, and in general be entertained.
  7. We all need to be optimistic I think when talking Hanley Ramirez. If he cannot play first base, I would be very surprised if he stays a part of this team with respect to using him as a dh next year. Unless he is injured, I don't think that keeping him around - pinch hitting and occasionally dhing will work at all. IMO that would be a definite recipe for major team issues. They have the players to get by perfectly well and maybe even better without him. Even though nothing is being really said about what happens if this next experiment does not work, I am betting that a lot of people are at least thinking about what the next step would be. Hope he can at least play an adequate first base. He should be able to. I think that it is up to him.
  8. Wouldn't try that one. Normally you get what you pay for. In Porcello's case, not so much. He may still be a very important piece but I am glad somebody else is paying him.
  9. Just listened to an interview with the current third baseman MVP (not a Red Sox). His comments about Price work for me. Sounds like the kind of player and teammate that any team would love to have. Price is over paid but aren't they all. If you are going to overpay, it makes a lot of sense to me to overpay for the best. This is the kind of player that we have needed. A lot of money- yes- but still a common sense sign if you can afford him.
  10. All I can think of here, is that they feel that they still have a pretty good backup plan. Shaw can play first or third and nobody really knows what he can do over the long haul in Boston. I also kind of thought that we would see one more guy added to the rotation but right now it doesn't look that way. I don't think that replacing Ramirez whether in the field or at the plate is the big issue. It is what do you do with him if he can't play first base? That could create a big problem. This is a Hanley Ramirez opportunity. If he is working and putting in the time it takes to actually learn how to play the position, great. If he isn't and he can't get it done, I feel bad for him because it could be a career ender. I would not be at all surprised to see Sam Travis at first base for Boston before the season is over.
  11. As much as I would love to see them add another starter, what Ramirez does or doesn't do has a tremendous amount of significance. If he can't play that position, I still think they are set up to compete but the question of what do you do with him could get very interesting. I don't see him getting shelved until Ortiz retires. You have to hope that he can do the job. He should be able to.
  12. Interesting - No doubt about the fact that Ramirez's ability to play first base is huge. Not a lot in that projection overall to be negative about. Hanley's play this year will play a major role. Mystery!
  13. Is this suggesting that they might be numbskulls?
  14. Hey- I can deal with old age - traditional - old school but don't be calling me any kind of moron. Seriously though, do you think the cheese could ever slide off the cracker of one of those saber metric folks?
  15. I shudder to think where that Bill James book would be found.
  16. David Bowie eyes! He is an old soul. Very traditional. Doesn't give a crap about those bad metrics. I like that . (just a little joke now) Don't need the saber metric folk going all unhinged on me.
  17. Clearly big, tall, strong guys are the way to go. They run faster, hit harder, and hurt the ground more than themselves when dive for balls. The deck is clearly stacked against a guy like Pedroia. If he doesn't at least have blue eyes, he could be really screwed.
  18. I see him as a hell of a lot better bet to get it done than I do of Ramirez getting it done at first. All projections aside, all issues about what we look like on paper, quite a few things really do have to go well in order for this team to be in the hunt next fall.
  19. It is a very revealing article. The people who actually go onto the field probably aren't (hopefully) paying too much attention to the metrics. Most of these guys probably know less about what all of the abbreviations mean than I do. There has to be some sort of filter between management and players. Now that is not to say that all of the information gleaned from the compilation of the data shouldn't be used. Not very likely that many of the actual players are doing the interpretation.
  20. Brian Johnson says that he is healthy as in 100% and ready to go. I could not be happier. He is my sleeper pick. He knows how to pitch. Buchholz, Kelly have attractive potential that we hope will morph into someone who can stay healthy and actually last for at least most of the season. Owens is tall and might be decent. Wright has an ever improving knuckleball. Johnson can just pitch. Nice curve, works fast etc. If he does in fact stay healthy, I am betting on him being in our regular rotation by June or July. I think that he will stay for a while as well.
  21. I can buy that. Essentially because I believe that your first paragraph still can represent an essential part of the game.
  22. Wish I did.
  23. Not so much because I remember back to pre- marriage days and what the advice was for me then - If you want to know what your wife will look like later on, look at her mother. Very true but I got lucky there. I also get to look at my older brothers. It is unbelievable though.
  24. In addition to the classic line - son, if you can't be good be careful - as I headed out the door, my Dad told me once when I told him that he was indeed old - look in the mirror, tomorrow you will see me. He was right.
  25. It got shot off his head.
