  1. I love the way some of these guys handle their bats. Hitting the ball away from defenders has and will always make sense. Watching XB go to right as opposed to trying to rip every pitch into or over the left field wall works perfectly. He may never reach the expectations that some people have for him with respect to power numbers but oh well - we might just have to be satisfied with the fact that he is just a very good hitter. I do have to scratch my head a little here because Chili I think is the same guy who had to deal with a certain amount of abuse when things weren't going well last year. The whole coaching staff had to dig the fox holes. How much better are those coaches when the players actually play? A lot I guess.
  2. It looks as though john Farrell is very good manager of people. Players like him and work hard for him. That said, he does do some "interesting" things. What he doesn't do might be more important though - He does not throw the ball for Price or Kimbrel and he does not hit for Young. I do not happen to think that Lovullo provides any major improvement. It would amount to change for change sake.
  3. Just thinking but I'm pretty sure that if you asked Wahlberg, he would tell you that he could outhit Holt!
  4. they whine about anybody who might conceivably whine about the Pats
  5. yup - challenged by the climate - 3 inches of snow yesterday will do it to you.
  6. Not sure what his prospect status would be but his start in Pawtucket has been a slow one. His bat ultimately should be decent for a catcher. His catching ability - we will have to wait and see. He might very well stay in the Red Sox organization for lots of reasons. I hope he does.
  7. I think that it has something to do with being from New England.
  8. I'm not quite ready to eliminate tommy lane from the mix just yet.
  9. I am just happy that the right guy got the chance to play third base. He had outplayed Sandoval from the onset of spring training. Whether he is the third baseman of the future or not, I will give credit to Farrell for dong the right thing with him. It would have been an absolute shame if he had not been pencilled in as the starting third baseman on opening day.
  10. i like John Farrell as well but almost every game he leaves me confused. I'm sure that it has already been discussed over and over somewhere but last night's lineup without both Ortiz and Ramirez. I understand that everybody was tired but you take both of those bats out of the lineup at the same time? really - your two best potential power producers. Someone enlighten me as to why this was a good move please.
  11. He was off to a very good start. Devers not so much but Jordan Betts has been productive. Add Witte to the bunch and it might actually make sense that Chavis has been playing short.
  12. It always sucks to see a young player get injured. Jantzen Witte now at Pawtucket is off to a good start.
  13. If Swihart is moved from behind the plate to either 3rd, left, or first, once he goes through the process of learning a new position once again, he will be standing in a long line of damned good prospects just licking their chops and waiting to show what they can do. His attraction is and always will be for better or worse that he projects as a decent hitting catcher. If he is going to make it in Boston, he is going to have to learn how to catch. We actually do have some other pretty good catching prospects who are showing good promise at the plate.
  14. got nothing that hasn't already been said- death and taxes now those are sure things
  15. One thing that no one tends to talk about is what is the hitting ceiling for Vazquez? He could become an adequate or even a good hitter. I like his chances of becoming a good hitter more than I like Swihart's chances of becoming better than an average catcher. It could take years before Swihart becomes the catcher that he might become. If he could help to bring us a solidly good pitcher, it might be the best thing that could happen for us as well as for him.
  16. Ockimey is a very good story. Too many kids playing well to list them all. i'm liking Dubon also.
  17. I am going to bet on Swihart being a better bet than Cecchini. i don't think that his bat will lay over all other prospects to warrant him moving from behind the plate though. He quite possibly with time becomes an adequate defensive catcher just not adequate enough to move him ahead of Vazquez. All of us who share this belief hope that we are wrong. good kid and good athlete.
  18. Shaw plays the game the right way. He is better than everybody gave him credit for being and he has an absolute rifle for an arm. Going forward, sadly for us possibly, it is going to require some intelligence to actually get these guys into positions where the best players are on the field in positions that they can help us the most. If Moncada continues to hit, he is going to move quickly upward. To continue using him at second base is the kind of "failure to adjust before it is too late" mentality that we are used to.
  19. better than watching the boneheads we keep hoping are going to be better than they are going to be - year after year after year.
  20. touch and go here with Swihart and Devers for me. I know how how much you like Swihart. I like him to , just not as much. I like Devers too but I think that you could also make a case for Chavis. I agree with you about Kopech. If he develops, I think that it will be with us. I also think that Moncada could wind up at third base as well with Shaw moving back to first. I do think that DD is going to make a trade here eventually that is going to be upsetting to some - but I think that it will be for pitching! I will be ok with that for sure.
  21. I also think that getting Moncada off second base makes sense. He is very apt to be moving quickly through the system. I think that quite possibly Sam Travis could be our first baseman on opening day next year. Ramirez to the dh and Shaw stays put at third. Sandoval is heading toward that big dumpster. Now, with all that being said, a package of Sam Travis and others might just help to bring a real pitcher to Boston to help us get over the fact that both Kelly and Buchholz are essentially useless if you have to count on them.
  22. Interesting - For a young upward trending guy that has proven himself just a bit I would be ok with this package for sure. You would meet a lot of resistance from posters here who are willing to wait for the upside of all of these guys. Sadly, in some of these cases it might have already have been reached. Personally - as much as I love JBJ in the field, for the right player he would be gone in a heartbeat. His talent as well as his potential is replaceable. Once again, it is about the pitching.
