Hey - I'm already past the potential effect of this trade. I'm pretty excited by the fact that we got Sale but I do want to watch to see if Moncada develops the way most scouts think that he might. I'll never regret the fact that the trade was made regardless but I can't help but think that this kid has the potential to be a future great. A lot of negative comments were made here after seeing this kid swing and miss curve balls over the course of 20 at bats. Comparing his progress to that of Benintendi's was also a bit unfair. I'll say once more that as much as I like Benintendi, guessing at what he might do in the future compared to Moncada is unfair. Potentially!!! A player with Moncada's abilities comes along once in a generation - see Mike Trout. Before I take a beatdown, let me say again, great trade for us - no hindsight from me. Espinoza who?

I like this post. Could not agree with it any more than I do. Personally speaking, now that the pieces seem to be assembled, we get a chance to see what kind of impression DD makes with respect to the future future of this franchise. If the same energy can be put into locating, signing, and teaching our future young players that we have seen from our prior two GM's we could actually be in store for an incredible baseball experience going forward. We live in New England. We need this more than many other areas do for many reasons not the least of which is that it is a cold, dark winter. Merry Christmas !!!

I'm with you on the Bucksnorter too. Looks like Kelly is still in the mix so the way I see it you have to keep both the little bastards. Have to keep the twins together. I wonder if he kept any of the "we're all aces t-shirts"? Closer to being appropriate this time around.

I agree - big market teams should be able to come close to the ideal year in and year out. You just have to utilize everything that is available to you. This current version of the Red Sox is very close.

Makes a lot of sense to me. It is how I see it. I also think Dubon is the sleeper here. He really looks like a young up and coming prospect. I feel very much like you do about Espinoza. More importantly - Joe Foy

come on now - I normally choose my words very carefully - Pretty much all of us - maybe not but close. There is plenty of room there for other perspectives. maybe 75% would think that throwing money at big name relief guys could be better spent elsewhere? I would have made it simpler and used the word majority but I didn't want to get back into the discussion we had last fall if you know what I mean.lol We have very careful readers here in talksox country.

I believe this and have. if Sandoval comes back healthy and well, we might be better offensively ultimately and there is no question that from a front line pitching perspective we really are in very good shape. I'm pretty sure that some of my nervous feeling about the offense comes from taking Papi out of the middle of that lineup. I really have gotten used to having him there. I think that we will all miss him but the Mooreland pickup could turn out to be a really good one.

I hope it works out for both of them. I hope that the Mooreland pickup helps out which I think it should. Sandoval becomes a very important player all of a sudden. He is still a young man. We shall see. Obviously I have a lot of faith in our GM and his win now and for the foreseeable future (3-5) for me. He has added a number of experienced young veterans just entering their prime years.

Hope you are right. if you were trying to sell me something, with this reasoning I would not buy it though. obviously I feel a little differently than most do about Shaw. You might certainly cut into the production that both Papi and Shaw gave us but I would be beyond pleased and surprised if they match it.

I don't think that Bautista is the answer at all but the number of runs they scored last year doesn't paint the whole picture. When you score the runs matters quite a bit as well. You lose Shaw and Papi, you lose 50 + hr's and how many rbi's? I get the fact that we have strengthened the pitching. I hope it is enough.

this is a good post. Accurate too. What I would also say is that as hard as it is to say good bye (at least for now) to Espinoza, Kopech, Moncada, is that as good as they look - they are still prospects. I would love to see them become good ml performers but who knows. I hope that the tradeoffs prove to worth it. if they do, we are all in for a great future.

I understand perfectly what you mean and I don't really care about the terminology either. I'm guilty of spying many things that might seem a little over the top to prove a point as well. Gutting the farm to me means that there is 0 left and that is not the case. We lost some really good prospects but we'll probably still field some pretty good minor league teams. I don't need to defend DD - I'm not even "over the top" wired about his moves to date. What I like about most of them is that he has added players - good players- who are entering their prime years. If you can move prospects for players like this, I think that is great - Pomeranz included.

I don't see it happening but I do think that adding one more real power bat would help. For the record, I am not interested in seeing how many runs we scored last year again. I am much more interested in where we find the 50 plus home runs and the rbi's that go with them come from this year. Not last year - last year=old news.

I'm with you on this one as I am most of the time. the expression "gutting the farm" has been used by a number of people here. Whatever works I guess. I see it differently. We have added some players who are absolutely in their primes and we have given up some damn good prospects that would have been fun to watch develop. Without the deal for Sale, The Red Sox quite likely would have been very competitive next year. With the deal, they have established themselves as one of the team's to beat. For me, it is kind of lie the Celtics. Fun to watch, competitive for sure, but certainly not winning the big one and it won't matter how many young prospects get added. If our current moves looked to be a one year and done deal, I would be a lot more concerned. They don't so I am going to sit back and enjoy the next three years.
