  1. I've been to Coors Field twice. I actually got to take batting practice there once, believe it or not. My best hit was a one-hopper. Couldn't clear the fence. Anyway, BEAUTIFUL place to watch a game, IMO. People are friendly, the park is nice, and Denver is a pretty place to be in general.
  2. For the record, I want the Red Sox to go after the Cuban 1b, Abreu. I think he'll end up being a 35-40 hr masher from the right side of the plate, which would be just awesome for Boston. Carp, though, is someone I definitely want to remain with Boston. He's under team control until 2017, so it won't be hard for them to keep him. And if they lose out on Abreu, I really think Carp can probably be a suitable 1b. Here are his career numbers: vs. RHP: .264/.340/.451/.791, 579 ab, 22 hr, 26.3 ab/hr vs. LHP: .292/.335/.455/.790, 154 ab, 5 hr, 30.8 ab/hr So the numbers are pretty similar in OBP, SLG, OPS, and hr rate in either split. His career per-162 game average is: .270/.339/.452/.791, with 18 hr, 71 rbi in 481 ab. So I think he could be a serviceable 1b if they lose out on Abreu. I'd rather have Abreu because, like I said, I think he will be a real mauler out there, but they could do worse than Carp, for sure.
  3. I have to say, this stretch of baseball by the Sox starting with the SF series has been one of the most enjoyable I can ever remember as a fan. vs. SF - took 2 of 3, lost one in tough fashion, but it was a good way to kick off the west coast swing vs. LAD - took 2 of 3 from the hottest team in baseball; starting pitching was really rolling at this point vs. Bal - took 2 of 3, lost a tough last one, but still, playing great vs. ChW - swept a 3-game series, in impressive fashion; Chi isn't very good but still, nice to sweep a series vs. Det - took 2 of 3, beating Scherzer and then putting up the 20-spot; great two-day stretch vs. NYY - took 3 of 4, winning in incredible fashion, and putting up two BS against Mariano vs. TB - have taken the first 2 in this series as well, beating Price and Cobb in the process That's 16 out of 21, with some prodigious offense and great pitching thrown in there, along with a handful of dramatic, clutch hits. It's just been awesome to watch.
  4. It's a stupid thing to comment on is what it is.
  5. I said "change the calculus". Why, is that a bad thing to say?
  6. As of this moment (who knows what will transpire over the next few weeks (injuries, etc.) that may change the calculus), here's my preferred 25-man playoff roster for the first round anyway: C - Salty 1b - Napoli 2b - Pedroia 3b - Middlebrooks SS - Drew LF - Gomes CF - Ellsbury (assuming he's good to go) RF - Victorino DH - Ortiz C - Ross IF - Bogaerts OF/1b - Carp OF - Nava OF - Berry OF - Bradley SP - Buchholz, Lester, Peavy, Lackey RP - Uehara, Workman, Tazawa, Breslow, Dempster, and then one of Thornton/Britton/Morales/Doubront Notes: - I think they only need 10 pitchers - a lot of days off and it's just a best 3 of 5. - I like Berry there for that specific skill of stealing and running the bases. - I know there's only one backup IF in Bogaerts. I'm hoping for no injuries. Middlebrooks can play 2b in an emergency. - Lots of versatility in this roster. - Only 2 catchers, because Napoli can play C in an emergency.
  7. Yeah, I think winning tonight or tomorrow would absolutely nail it down. Take one of the next two and the Sox would be up 8.5 with 14 left. Almost impossible to overcome that for Tampa.
  8. Bogaerts needs to be the Red Sox' starting SS next season. He has nothing left to prove in the minors, he's got all the tools to be a wildly successful major-leaguer. Instead of spending $14 million (or whatever the number is) on a SS that will simply block Bogaerts, they should move on from him. Now, I like the idea of getting draft compensation for losing him; I'd rather not lose him for nothing. And it's possible that the Sox could make him a QO, he signs it, and then the Sox deal him to someone for a prospect.
  9. Impressive performance by Clay last night. Assuming he pitches well the rest of the season, it sets the Sox up with the best 1-4 I can remember them ever having for a playoff run: Buchholz (would be a CYA candidate had he stayed healthy) Lester (been dominant since the ASB) Lackey (a couple of speed bumps lately, but he's been terrific all season) Peavy (been great since joining the Sox) I don't know what order they'd want them in, but man, it means that every game out there, the Sox would have a good chance of winning. Don't forget, in the past week they've beaten last year's CYA winner (Price), and this year's presumptive CYA winner (Scherzer). Even if the Sox don't have a CYA candidate, they have a team capable of out-hitting or out-pitching the opposition.
  10. Remember when Manny cut off Johnny Damon's throw from left-center field? That was awesome.
  11. And until Middlebrooks got recalled, we got very little production out of the 3b spot.
  12. Clearly this one is the reason for all the others.
  13. FWIW, the Red Sox: - Have the most wins in baseball (87) - Have the biggest run differential (+162) - Have the best home record in baseball (47-25) - Have the highest team OPS in baseball (.795) - Have the highest team OBP in baseball (.350) - Have the highest team SLG in baseball (.446) - Have the most extra base hits in baseball (511) - Are 4th in baseball in stolen bases (111) - Are 1st in baseball in SB% (85%) Very, very impressive stuff.
  14. Every single Red Sox hitter with more than 100 plate appearances (there are 12 of them) has an ops+ of >100. Eight of the 12 have an ops+ of 112 or greater. That's unbelievable.
  15. At worst, that would be a terrific backup C and late-game defensive substitution. Suddenly the Sox seem flush with real potential at this position. Good article on Swihart from Sept 2: http://www.masslive.com/redsox/index.ssf/2013/09/boston_red_sox_have_quite_a_ca.html From what I see so far, I'd be very happy with this duo manning the dish for the Sox for a while in the future.
  16. Not to say that crazy things can't happen, but it is exceedingly difficult for me to see how the Sox do not win the division at this point. Just go 7-10 and the Rays have to go 16-4 just to tie. Put it this way: the Rays need to sweep this series against the Sox to have any chance whatsoever. Sox' magic number is just 12.
  17. Good article on the Sox' lineup at cnnsi.com: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/mlb/news/20130909/red-sox-offense/?sct=hp_wr_a2&eref=sihp
  18. I think the Sox have a number of candidates for this "honor" (not even sure if the team hands out an award for this): Ortiz: .311/.396/.560/.956, 156 ops+, 26 hr, 89 rbi, 3.9 bWAR Victorino: .295/.352/.456/.808, 118 ops+, 14 hr, 56 rbi, 5.6 bWAR Ellsbury: .299/.355/.424/.779, 111 ops+, 52 sb, 5.4 bWAR Pedroia: .299/.374/.414/.788, 114 ops+, 16 sb, 78 rbi, 5.5 bWAR Uehara: 3-0, 18 sv, 1.12 era, 376 era+, 0.59 whip, 12.5 k/9, 3.3 bWAR, but really stabilized the bullpen after Bailey and Hanrahan went down and they had no closer Tough call from among this group of guys, really.
  19. By the way: How to score a lot of runs? Apparently by just hitting the crap out of the ball. Last 4 games for the Sox: 20 r, 19 h, 4 2b, 8 hr, 4 bb, 19-41 9 r, 16 h, 2 2b, 2 hr, 10 bb, 16-45 12 r, 15 h, 2 2b, 3 hr, 7 bb, 15-41 13 r, 14 h, 5 2b, 4 hr, 2 bb, 14-39 TOT: 54 r, 64 h, 13 2b, 17 hr, 23 bb, 64-166, .386 avg, .460 obp, .819 slg, 1.279 ops Yeah, that'll work!
  20. Victorino: 5.7 fWAR, 5.6 bWAR Each win above replacement is "worth" about $5 million. We can all do the math on this to see just how valuable Victorino has been this season.
  21. Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal6m #RedSox sent Ellsbury back to Boston to get examined. Right foot in a boot. Jacoby looks like he'll be out for a little while (no idea how long), but "foot in a boot" is generally not a great sign. Fortunately, the Sox lead the division by 7.5 with less than 3 weeks to play, and they're up 9.5 for the last WC slot (should some disaster happen). It's as good a time as any to rest Ellsbury and let him heal up, I guess.
  22. Last two starts it's been a real struggle for Felix. I'm very interested in his next start. Either he rights the ship and these last two were just blips on the radar, or he continues to struggle and it would appear he's hit a wall. So I agree with you, SoxSport, at this point (not knowing what Clay will give us), I think the playoff rotation needs to be Lester, Lackey, Peavy, and then probably Clay.
  23. Yeah I think they'd have to exercise an option on Lester for like $13 million, which would be totally worth it.
  24. They already have the right building blocks. Five good starting pitchers all under contract for next year. A stud reliever along with a couple of other guys (Taz, Breslow) that are very solid. Good position players all over the place. Tons of young kids ready to roll. Lots of money. What I want is the Cuban 1b Abreu. And I want Dempster traded in the offseason for a prospect. Either sign McCann or re-sign Salty (either works for me). And then there's enough money to either do Ellsbury or get another big OF bat if you want.
  25. This organization is in EXCELLENT position not just for now, but for the forseeable future. Obviously a great team at present, no onerous contracts, a great mix of veterans and young guys, and a ton of prospects percolating on the farm. And, of course, tons of financial resources and a good amount of financial wiggle room to use it. Yeah, 700, that trade last year was HUGE. Miraculous, really.
