    The funniest thing about the A-Rod contract extension was that the Yankees actually tacked 2 more years on top of what he was asking for, this of course after originally saying they were done if he opted out. It was a classic moment in the history of bad sports contracts.

    This series isn't quite over yet. The Yankees have Sabathia, Pettitte and Kuroda lined up, and I have a feeling their bats are going to break out a bit tonight.

    That's why to this day I thank God for that umpiring crew in Game 6. It still strikes me as incredible that they fixed both of those calls.

    I'm interpreting all this as reverse psychology. Here, I'll run with it too. Sabathia is a lock. O's have NO CHANCE today.

    I agree with the stark contrast, I agree that the mark of incompetence was all over the 2012 season. I hope that the Sox FO experienced this year like having s*** rubbed in their faces every day and that it made them desperate to do much better.

    OK, I made some comments about Gonzalez too, so having given this some thought I'm going to try to clarify my position. Gonzalez was in our system for 2 years and his numbers were not good at all. Though oddly his one outing for the PawSox had a line of 5 innings, 1 run, 2 hits, 1 walk, 5 K's. Somehow when the O's acquired he quickly transformed into a very effective major league pitcher with a 3.25 ERA as a rookie and a great outing last night in the Stadium. So what happened? Did we screw up, or was this just bad luck/bad timing of the type that frequently happens. The thing is, the Red Sox system has hardly covered itself in glory as far as producing starters the last 5 years, has it? Doubie is about it. So you look at the Red Sox starters having an ERA of 5.19 this year, then you look at Gonzalez pitching beautifully, and for me anyway, it's pretty hard not to want to scream a little.

    OK, but again, it would be helpful if you would be more specific about which comments you find embarrassing and insulting. Then the people who made the comments could respond.

    What the hell are you talking about? I've been reading this thread and it's been a good, civil discussion. Please respond to specific posts instead of making blanket statements like that.

    If by restraint you mean staying under the 189 million lux tax threshold, then I'll agree with you. Baseball has become an incredible money making machine and big market teams are going to spend big. Look at what the Dodgers just did, and they've already said they're going to spend more this offseason. The only thing I can see as a possibility is that the length of contracts might come down...eventually.

    Yeah, it's like, if you are going to have a ridiculous contract, Tulowitzki might be one guy who's worth it. Manny's contract was ridiculous, but one of the best investments in the team's history.

    You're raising some interesting questions. It's great that we were able to unload 250 million of contracts. But do any of us really believe we'll be able to rebuild a World Series contender over the next few years without taking on at least one or two new big contracts? Is it possible for a big-market team like the Red Sox to do that? And even if we were able to do it, would the fans be happy? The luxury tax cap goes to 189 million in 2014. Should the Red Sox have the goal of having a payroll that's just under the cap, or should they spend much less than that? If they spend much less than that, where does all that extra money go? Back to the owners? Reduced ticket prices? (LOL)

    If the Yankees want better production from A-Rod they better get Kate Hudson back on the case. When A-Rod was banging her back in 2009 he suddenly turned into Mr. October.

    Swisher - it's such a rarity for us to sign somebody with credentials away from the Yankees that I don't even consider it as a realistic possibility.

    The Nats are not sitting pretty, man. You are way overrating the home field thing. St. Louis has Carpenter back for Game 3 and Carpenter has been a superb big-game pitcher with a 9-2 postseason record. Plus their bats just caught fire.

    As crazy as it is, even with the lengthy slide he had, Nava ended up with the second-highest OBP on the team. He was one of the few hitters on the 2012 team with some patience.
