  1. A player like Pedey is one reason I like looking at WAR to see what a player really contributed in total.
  2. Nah, we still woulda won that series, but in 7 games. Plenty of teams have come from 2-0 down. Seriously, you could also say we were very lucky in 2004 and 2007 to come from 3-0 and 3-1 ALCS deficits. So you could say we're incredibly lucky to have 3 titles. If that's how you to choose to look at it. Or you could say we should have won in 1975, 1978, 1986, 2003 and 2008.
  3. One thing I would also point out is that several World Series teams over the past decade or so have had closers who had great seasons or great postseasons virtually out of nowhere.
  4. He signed the extension in July/13. He finished 7th in 2013 MVP voting. How is that being paid on reputation? He's being paid on past performance, yes, but which players aren't?
  5. Talk of trading Pedroia doesn't seem to be paying much attention to his huge defensive value, especially considering that we now have a bunch of groundball pitchers.
  6. His new contract was not a pay cut, but at $14.17 million AAV, it was definitely a below-market contract.
  7. For better or worse, Benny Boy is really putting himself on the line with the pitching staff he has assembled.
  8. No kidding. Hopefully they are.
  9. In other speculation, Alex Speier suggests that the size of the Scherzer deal takes the Red Sox out of next year's free agent market for pitchers. http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2015/01/21/max-scherzer-deal-likely-takes-red-sox-out-next-year-free-agent-market/PYwynMmOEst7IA5rA6OvtO/story.html?event=event25*
  10. The source might be a little dubious, I don't know. http://baseballhotcorner.com/red-sox-prepared-make-move-jordan-zimmermann/
  11. Nice post, Fred. I especially like the terms 'allies' and antagonists'.
  12. The term Fellowship of the Miserable, BTW, was coined by Rick Pitino when he was coach of the Celtics.
  13. That's a good point too. You need a CPA to figure some of this stuff out.
  14. Seems like a safe bet that Scherzer would have taken 7/$190 over 14/$210.
  15. I agree, this place threatens at times to become exactly like that. It's up to everybody to make sure it doesn't.
  16. Red Sox are reportedly preparing to make a strong offer for Zimmermann. Red Sox sign Dana Eveland to minor league deal. Amaro doesn't expect to trade Hamels.
  17. At Sawxheads I had an intimate look at the one thing that can turn a forum into hell. It's when the posters align into two clearly defined parties - the positives and the negatives, or, as seen by the other side, the Front Office Ballwashers and the Fellowship of the Miserable - and it becomes an all-out war of partisan politics and personal attacks.
  18. Last offseason Dombrowski traded Fister for Ray, Krol, and Lombardozzi. Fister was 8th in Cy Young voting. Maybe Dombrowski is just f***ing up.
  19. His big ticket boys get paid, that's for sure. It's his small ticket boys that have been losers, arguably - Varitek, S Drew & Morales.
  20. We'll find out a lot about Bradley this year. Surely last year was a humbling experience.
  21. Looks like Washington will be close to the luxury tax threshold if they sign Scherzer. Back loading wouldn't help that.
  22. The Sox normally settle before it goes to arbitration. I'd expect Nava to end up with 1.9 million or thereabouts.
  23. Wouldn't that also take Kershaw out of the ace category?
  24. This is about Cliff Lee's vesting option for 2016. From what I can tell, Lee is guaranteed the $12.5 million buyout even if the option doesn't vest.
  25. And yet the 2010 team still won 89 games with a lot of injuries. It kind of shows how high the fans expectations were then, that 89 wins was such a disappointment. Now we're softened up a bit after watching 69 win and 71 win teams.
