Home runs are great. They're also relatively rare. When you keep getting guys on base some of them going to score just by accident. Singles, walks, hit by pitch, steals, errors, wild pitches, passed balls, productive outs, sacrifice flies. And of course extra-base hits work too. It's all good, as they say.

There's no question that Bobby Orr is the consensus pick as the greatest of all time. Followed by Gordie Howe and then probably Gretzky. Sidney Crosby is moving up the list. The man is a beast - a rare combination of high skills, brute strength and smarts.

I was a hockey nut when I was a kid. Bobby Hull was my favorite player and the Hawks were my team. Then old Bobby started up his own freakin' league, the WHA, and never played in the NHL again. That really soured me on hockey.

We've got the talent to be a good offense. Just need guys to stay healthy and get it going.

I like hockey...Sidney Crosby grew up about 10 miles from me...but I love baseball. I like the Red Sox, not the Jays. You might think that makes me an atypical Canadian, but from what I've observed there are a lot of my kind, here in part of the country at least. A lot of us Halifax folks have made the trip to Fenway numerous times...it's always been a popular destination for people here because it's not really that far away...you can drive there in about 11 or 12 hours.

You're right, and if the Sox don't make the playoffs this year, D.D. is going to come under fire. That's just the way she goes.

LOL what you have to realize, my friend, is that it doesn't matter whether you are cool as a cucumber or in full-on freakout mode. Your personal reactions don't impact anything and in fact don't matter at all. I hope that helps.

Kimmi, the way I look it, whether I'm optimistic or pessimistic doesn't really matter. That statement might end up looking stupid, hopefully. Don't worry, I'm not going to end up going all Pumpsie. I just have a feeling that somewhat unrealistic expectations were placed on this team. You take away David Ortiz and you leave a core of position players that's very young, aside from Pedroia. They may be feeling a lot of pressure.

Copying this from the game thread: Dombrowski is accountable for the pen, especially if it turns out to seriously cost us. I agree you can't normally blame the GM for guys getting injured. But when you acquire not one but two guys who are injured before they even play for you, you have to wonder. Koji would have been a relatively inexpensive get. Theo made a smart move getting him.

Our pitching has been fine. But our offense, infield defense and fundamentals have not.

Yeah, absolutely. That was exposed on a crazy play where Mike Napoli hit a high fly ball that wasn't caught and bounced up like a Superball off the warning track way up and into the stands for a ground-rule double. It just had much more bounce in it than it should have.

This team may have been severely overrated, I'm afraid.

Kimbrel has been outstanding. Barnes, Hembree and Kelly have very good - but I'm not sure they can keep it up.

Dombrowski put this team in a bad spot acquiring 2 8th inning guys who haven't thrown a pitch for us. Also by not re-signing Uehara.
