  1. By Peter Abraham Globe Staff December 10, 2014 SAN DIEGO — Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington wished Jon Lester well on Wednesday and said his only regret was not having more of a chance to negotiate with the lefthander before he was traded in July. “We would have liked to have had more chance for dialogue prior to the season,” said Cherington. “Why that didn’t happen, maybe there’s more than one reason. I think we can certainly learn from the process.” Lester agreed to terms with the Cubs on a six-year, $155 million deal early Wednesday morning, rejecting a $135 million offer from the Sox. The pitcher personally called Cherington at 1 a.m. (ET) with the news. Cherington said the team’s initial offer of four years and $70 million was meant as a starting point for negotiations. Lester and his agents instead chose not to negotiate once the season started.
  2. Cherington was part of the FO's public defense of the negotiations with Lester. He essentially complained about Lester's side not making a counter proposal to the 4/70 offer.
  3. First of all I'd like to see the exact quote from Ortiz...
  4. Well, looking at it logically, I see no reason to think he wouldn't have. He did it for St. Louis, had a good season and cashed in with a 2 year $32 million deal. He did the smart thing, in other words. I don't see why not being traded would make him stupid instead of smart.
  5. The trade of Miller for ERod could turn out to be one of Ben's best moves. Not re-signing Miller, OTOH, was a big mistake.
  6. I loved Fred Lynn, but he was not a big home run hitter. He averaged 25 per 162 games, and he only had that one big season, 1979, where he hit more than 25.
  7. Benintendi could be a 20 to 25 HR guy, in that Fred Lynn mold that has been mentioned. He's only 22 after all.
  8. Sucks that Leonard is injured. Spurs might have given the Warriors a go if he wasn't.
  9. Now check out this cartoon about Drew's reaction to Ellsbury stealing home.
  10. Harper has been something else so far this year, though.
  11. Drew was a very talented all-around player. High OBP, plenty of power, excellent outfielder and a very good baserunner.
  12. I don't think I would ever wish the job of Red Sox manager on Papi.
  13. I think it was 1969 that I first started listening to Sox games on the radio. My first official Sox heartbreak was 1972. My first visit to Fenway was 1974.
  14. I endorse any post that has the phrase 'fair as f***' in it.
  15. Here's what's going to happen. Panda is going to come back and look okay for a few games. After 5 games or so he's going to pull a hammy or some such thing and John Henry is going to go 'Aargh, I can't stand it any more, bring up Devers!'
  16. Yeah, but you failed to come up with the other $60 million plus tax we needed to sign Encarnacion.
  17. It is kind of funny that it so often ends up at 7.
  18. There are very few great players who become great managers.
  19. Your consistency is commendable, Kimmi. I mean that.
  20. What's hilarious is that every manager gets accused of leaving starters in too long, as if they're not aware of the fact that the guy has given up some runs and doesn't have his best stuff.
  21. Kimbrel's cost of $13 million might turn out to be a bargain. If he keeps pitching like this he might end up with a WAR of 3 or more. And as I keep harping about, it's in the postseason where a closer's value can be the greatest. You can't even put a dollar value on what Foulke did for us in '04, Papelbon in '07 or Koji in '13. Theo gave up a top prospect for Chapman to close out a few postseason wins for the Cubs, basically. He wasn't even needed in the regular season.
  22. Francona took unbelievable abuse throughout his last few years in Boston. Maybe not on this site but on the BDC site and on the nightmarish (LOL) Sawxheads site.
  23. Yeah I'm just a little dubious about totally relying on the s*** at the wall approach myself. I don't remember too many top notch relievers coming out of nowhere for us. The example that people like to toss out there is Koji. But Koji was always a good pitcher.
  24. Any examples of a manager winning a game?
