  1. Former Yankee pitcher Esteban Loaiza has been arrested on felony drug charges. Can anybody tell me Loaiza's big moment in Red Sox history, without looking it up?
  2. Interestingly, last night I saw that MLB Network has a show about the 1971 Pittsburgh Pirates. On September 1, 1971 the Pirates became the first team in MLB history to field a starting nine consisting entirely of minority players. https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/PIT/PIT197109010.shtml
  3. An interesting take on Boras's role in this stagnant offseason: https://www.athleticsnation.com/2018/2/9/16997594/mlb-offseason-free-agency-scott-boras-tony-clark-mlbpa
  4. I can't really buy into this. For one thing, the 2017 team had an incredible 15-3 record in extra inning games. Some of that is luck and some is just good bullpen pitching. But still, you have to have some mental toughness to put up a record like that.
  5. What would Theo do in this situation? If you look at the Darvish deal, Theo really put in a lot of bells and whistles - incentive clauses, a 2 year opt-out etc. Maybe Dave needs to do something a little creative, if they really want to sign Martinez. If they can sign him without adding too much more in actual cash it might be worth it just so they know what the 2018 team is.
  6. So if we had a leader we 'can win 95 games'. Funny thing is, we won 93 games last year without a leader. So you think this great leader might make a difference of 2 whole games. Wow, that's really exciting.
  7. Cheer up, man. Until 2001 the Patriots had never won it all and the Red Sox hadn't won since 1918. Now they have a combined 8 championships since 2001. The Celtics and the Bruins have each won championships since then as well.
  8. Let's try this again. You said: "No GM goes 7-8 years straight drafting 20 or lower." I questioned the validity of this statement and that's why I pointed out the Yankees record for 1995-2012.
  9. Yes, we finished last 3 out of 4 but we won it all the other year. Then we won the division in 2016 and 2017. Since 2003 this team has been more or less continuously successful. When you get knocked out in the first round it's easy to say we 'didn't look like a contender'. I tend to subscribe to the 'playoffs are a crapshoot' theory myself.
  10. And this is why I tend to stay away from all the detailed stuff about farm rankings and prospects. All that really matters to me is that Dombrowski and company make an intelligent effort to re-stock our depleted farm.
  11. I think Red Sox fans really have gotten jaded by success. The team wins 93 games and the division and people talk about them like they were a disgrace. It's kind of f***ed-up.
  12. It was notin who originally questioned this. But I'm questioning it too. The Yankees made the playoffs every year from 1995 to 2012 except 2008, and they won 89 games in 2008. So yes, it's possible to go a long time without getting a pick above #20 (unless, under the old rules, you got it from losing a free agent.)
  13. We lost Rizzo...I assume you realize that but you're not being very clear.
  14. But you're the same guy who has been telling us over and over how we have to capitalize on our window.
  15. Maybe the 'back end of the build' is an 'issue' for every GM, even the best, because that's just the way it works.
  16. I have to call nonsense on this. Let's just recap the record: 15 years as GM 3 World Series wins 7 LCS appearances 9 playoff appearances
  17. None, you're right about that, I was just talking about his overall approach.
  18. Please explain this.
  19. I think Theo tries to use a balanced approach. Drafts, trades, free agents.
  20. He's not incapable. He made a good move trading Cespedes for Fulmer.
  21. Define 'skyrocket' in this case.
  22. Well, we've finally had our first 9-figure signing...
  23. Which means that Price averaged about .15 fWAR per start, and Darvish about .145 per start. Not very different in terms of performance.
  24. What's so bad about DH's? That Ortiz guy was OK.
  25. Not really the way it was in 2017. Most were screaming about our underperforming offense and lack of power.
