Before answering that, how do Massachusetts state income taxes compare to Maryland's? Just kidding. I agree with you. I think there are instances where the player will take a little less money for a better overall gig.

He seems to have become a lousy outfielder. Maybe he's just a glorified DH. And as a hitter he's a pale shadow of J D Martinez. And J D Martinez only got 110 million. The only thing Harper offers vs. J D Martinez is youth. (Looks like I'm in the mood for trashing Harper today. )

I'd say the chances are less than zero. We already have a fairly talented right fielder named Betts we might need to open the wallet for.

What's the difference between BC not resisting Pablo and Theo not resisting Crawford? Crawford was an even more expensive bust, in fact.

Seriously, Gray has never been an ace. His highest fWAR was 3.8. In 900 innings his fWAR is 13.7. That's 2.74 per 180 innings. Very respectable but far from an ace.

Sure, there's some truth in this. But I can't believe the truth is as simple as Lucchino being this dummy who somehow forced everyone else into these ill-advised moves.

Lucchino was not purely a marketing guy. He became kind of a convenient target to blame for signings like Crawford and Sandoval, it seems, even though we have no real evidence that this was the case. Show me something, anything that supports this.

I certainly don't disagree with your point about Mookie. You're just talking about making a sound economic decision. There's a vast difference between that and what James actually said, which was that 'there are no players who are underpaid' and 'they're all replaceable'. Apparently some of this stemmed from him getting tired of hearing about players making several million a year being referred to as underpaid. I know that when I say some player is underpaid, I mean in relation to other players, not to the general public. I think that's what most people mean when they say that. Suggesting that all the players could retire and be replaced and it wouldn't make any difference, that's just stupid. I don't understand why he would even go there.

I like Wright, but he has enormous difficulty staying on the field.

In a perfect world, signing Eovaldi for 4/60 or whatever it is seems like a nice move. You're not just doing it for 2019 but for 2020-2022. Sale and Porcello are free agents after 2019. There also may be some health concerns with Sale, I don't think anyone has a clear picture about that. Plus 'it's only money' - no need to trade away any more prospects for a starter.

It's not a bad thought. But maybe JD is insistent on playing some outfield. Maybe he genuinely likes it. It wasn't a problem in 2018, it really wasn't. And for all the grousing about NL rules, we still kicked butt in those NL parks. We're talking about trying to tweak what was nearly perfect. -
But 'bad' MLB players are still close to the top in the game. And the game is entertainment that generates billions in revenue. There's nothing wrong with the minimum salaries in MLB IMHO Now the top salaries are a different story.

He expressed his point in a pretty over-the-top way. 'The players are NOT the game, any more than the beer vendors are.' He deleted the tweets and the Red Sox quickly distanced themselves from the opinions. Not very smart IMHO
