  1. If he throws one more pitch in a regular season major league baseball game, that would clearly exceed the expectations of most.
  2. That's actually pretty good.
  3. Say this, he doesn't have much in the way of expectations to live up to.
  4. Swihart needs a team that isn't in contention, that can give him a chance to learn on the job. As notin says, the Marlins might be a possible landing spot.
  5. Yes, I tend to agree.
  6. Why would the owners want to kill such a golden goose?
  7. Thou art a tyrant!
  8. I have mixed feelings. I didn't realize the ban was rescinded. On what grounds did Manfred rescind it?
  9. Rosenthal is issuing some rumbling sounds about the possibility of a work stoppage. Says the players have made a move toward creating a reserve fund.
  10. The Yankees have also had quite a reversal in position.
  11. I think something pretty similar has happened to Theo's Cubs, maybe over a slightly longer period.
  12. I respect that kind of passion.
  13. I had to do some digging on this. The issue about Morrow was that Maddon used him in 3 straight games, May 31 to June 2, and Morrow subsequently reported some pain. The second thing Epstein was displeased about was Pedro Strop getting injured when Maddon inserted him as a pinch-hitter in extra innings, with the pen already depleted.
  14. Brandon Morrow started as the closer but got hurt. Theo Epstein was apparently a little displeased with Joe Maddon about the circumstances under which Morrow got injured...I don't remember the exact details.
  15. Kimbrel was extremely reliable for us for 3 seasons. I don't know what was going on with him in the postseason, but it was bad. Remarkably he didn't actually blow any games, just scared the crap out of everyone. Having him back would make us a better team. But his price is going to rule that out.
  16. Sox starters ERA 3.77 Yankee starters ERA 4.05 Sox bullpen ERA 3.72 Yankee bullpen ERA 3.38 Sox had better starters, Yankees had better bullpen. Anyone who says we had a 'much stronger staff' was being somewhat of a homer, I'd say. Our advantage in the starters really showed up in the ALDS. Sale being out as long as he was hurt our numbers a bit.
  17. Depends on his defense too.
  18. Dave's got something up his sleeve. Like everyone else here, I have no idea what it is yet.
  19. The great two-way catcher is a rare commodity. And when you have a catcher who can really hit, you can't help thinking maybe you should move them to first base so you can save their legs. I can remember a time some Sox fans were salivating at the prospect of prying Joe Mauer from the Twins. But the Twins locked up their hometown guy for 8/184, and it didn't pay off so well for them.
  20. That's true, but guess which catcher Sale has the best numbers with over his career? Yep, it's Sandy Leon, and it isn't close. With a miniscule .561 OPSa and a monstrous K/BB of 7.76. I'm with moon on this one.
  21. And you're the one who said the Sox could upgrade there. You've indicated on several occasions that you're interested in upgrading there, I think. The question is how much of a priority is it to upgrade there given the overall strength of the team and our 'capital constraints'. I can't see it as much of a priority at all for 2019. Maybe in 2020 or 2021 it would make more sense as other things change. I think the main point of interest right now at the position is whether DD going to trade one of them.
  22. Well, it's possible you could make a trade for a good cost-controlled reliever. That was the idea behind the trades for Thornburg and Smith, which of course didn't work out too well because of injuries, and stupidity in one case.
  23. I'm largely in agreement with you about the catcher position. I don't even give it much thought, because it's just not a problem area that anything needs to be done about.
  24. But what would be the point of replacing them with equal players?
  25. They might be a strength when you factor in their actual cost and control years, though, and when you factor in the cost of upgrading.
