  1. But if Kimmi and Alex Speier were there, they would have given him a talk about randomness, BABip and how luck tends to even out as the samples get large enough.
  2. It seems pretty unlikely to me that Rick's 5.61 ERA can be fully attributed to his spring schedule, which was not really scaled back that dramatically, considering he only pitched 4 innings less in ST games than the previous year. His 12 spring innings were more than a bunch of other major league starters who are doing fine. I think it's actually a little ridiculous at this point to blame it all on the spring schedule. It's almost the end of July.
  3. Keith Foulke's arm was destroyed in the 2004 postseason in pursuit of a flag. Isn't it possible that the same thing happened to Porcello?
  4. Denny, you seem to divide people into two classes, the ones who are good and the jabronis. It keeps things simple, that's for sure!
  5. Because Ted was, alas, a little too focused on his personal achievements, and certain achievements were more highly regarded back then. Like that game-winning home run in the All-Star Game that he always regarded as one of the great moments of his career.
  6. The whole reason the team did this was because they wanted to be 'cautious' given the way these guys were worked in the postseason - not just the innings but the high-stress relief innings they pitched on top of the starts. Let's take Porcello. Is the 'Occam's razor' explanation that this 'late start' screwed his season? Or is the 'Occam's razor' explanation that the team was right to be concerned, and that last postseason really did do a number on Rick?
  7. So you find RBI palatable as a 'real' statistic, but you dispute others like SLG and the concept of 'replacement player' and so on. Face it, this is all about your subjective personal preferences. You don't really have any support for any of it.
  8. The save thing is whacked out, although it could arguably be made into a legit stat if it was re-done.
  9. Or an out that meets the criteria.
  10. So go with Wins Above Average. It's there.
  11. And Kelly's 5.29 ERA?
  12. The Kimbrel we saw last year had stretches of being his old dominant self, and stretches of being scary, such as in the playoffs.
  13. Yeah but he chocked against the Angels in 2009...
  14. Very true. Minnesota and the Rays are the teams that are tumbling right now. It's possible Cleveland wins the division, Oakland is the first WC and we're battling Minnesota and the Rays for the second WC.
  15. But, if you were going to put together the best possible pitching staff, Mo would be on it.
  16. The MVP has been only average by Mookie Betts standards, that is. He's been way above average by MLB standards. Beni has been a very average player this year, but not a joke.
  17. I'll give you a quick example of why I need the numerical rating: Mike Yastrzemski, Carl's grandson. Mike is in his rookie season and his season started late. He's only played about 1/3 of a season. He's hitting .259. But he has an OPS of .787 (thanks to a .487 SLG, showing power) and an OPS+ of 105, so about 5% better than average. He has a bWAR of 1.0, which appears to be about half due to his defense. That would extrapolate to a 3.0 WAR for a full season. I haven't seen Mike play an inning, but these numbers show he's been playing as a solid, above-average major league outfielder.
  18. Randomness at its finest.
  19. Good movie, The Right Stuff.
  20. Rivera was pretty awesome at what he did, though. And he could pitch the multiple innings when needed. He pitched 3 innings in the Grady-Pedro game.
  21. The initial attack by Price, of course, came after Eck's infamous 'Yuck' comment. Apparently a number of Red Sox players were ticked off at Eck for what they deemed harsh treatment from him. JBJ had his own little episode with Eck a couple of years earlier. I'm not saying any of that to justify Price. But Shaughnessy's take here, unsurprisingly, does leave something out.
  22. I never ignore ya Denny. I like your posts.
  23. And some new stats shouldn't affect anyone's enjoyment. Old school folks can just ignore them.
  24. Oh you're such a smarty-pants.
