    The best I can say for our chances is that all the nails haven't been driven into the coffin yet. I wish I could do an entertaining graphic representation of the coffin and remaining nails, but I lack those skills.

    The odd thing is, Workman has been excellent since basically becoming the closer. And the pen in general has been excellent in August. And yet, we're a dismal 11-12 in August. Why? Because our rotation is basically a shell. What else can explain that 11-12 record with such good relief pitching?

    I'm indifferent to such gimmicks. But it would be interesting to know what impact, if any, there was on attendance and ratings.

    It feels like we've been down 3-0 in the first about 50 times.

    I would say your pen is about as good as last year. A better way to look at it might be to just compare the top 4, or top 5 guys for each year.

    Owings has been Dave's big pickup on offense this year. He's another reason Dave needs to go.

    The Yankees picked up one productive bat after another this year to offset their injuries. We got Chris Owings.

    It's all about the I told you so stuff. Seems a little childish to me. I was never one of the people who said our pen would be just fine. I was shocked that DD did so little about it. I'm just pointing out that the collapse of the starting pitching has been the bigger issue. You refuse to accept the facts on that.

    Didn't say that. I'm talking about why our record is what it is. The Yankees will end up with about the same record they had last year. The Red Sox are the team that got a lot worse.

    No, it isn't. Last year their pen had a 3.38 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP. This year it has a 4.05 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. Last year they had had Betances and Robertson. This year they have Britton for a full season and Ottavino. There's nothing to show it's better and deeper this year.

    You think it's all bullpen. The Yankees bullpen was much better than ours last year too, you know.

    Vegas currently has the Red Sox at 100 to 1 to win the pennant and 200 to 1 to win the World Series. You should be getting some money down.

    Yep. But it's a long freakin' season. I'm not by any means comparing this year to 2004, but in 2004 the team played .500 ball for 3 months, leading to Shaughnessy's famous 'frauds' line.

    I don't denigrate the eye test as much as some do. I just don't watch many games start to finish any more, so I need the numbers. With JBJ I like that WAR tries to answer the question of whether his defense more than makes up for his subpar bat. And the fact is that WAR has been very good to JBJ. I don't disagree that the variances can be confusing. But someone who has the know-how and patience can dig deep into the details and figure out what's going on.

    It all depends on the interpretation. To a Pollyanna it could sound like this: 'You guys are already good enough to get this done. You just have to play up to your potential, which we know you can and will do!'

    John Henry is not an easy guy to predict. I don't think anyone could have foreseen him paying as much tax as he has for 2018 and 2019. And this past offseason, where it seemed like the team didn't do much, he nonetheless authorized 145 mill for Sale, 120 mill for Xander, and 68 mill for Eovaldi. That's 333 million in new contracts. But then after Eovaldi and Pearce he closed the wallet.

    I don't think Cora has thrown in the towel, and I don't think any deadline move was going to be the big difference-maker. But our chances are obviously still very slim.
