    I'm just mainly looking at these admittedly primitive numbers: 2011 70 games missed OPS 712 2012 Only 5 games missed OPS 759 2013 76 games missed OPS 1040 2014 34 games missed OPS 817 I know that the reports were that Hanley could have gotten more than he got from us. My take on that, in hindsight, is that this was just before the spreadsheet folks started really playing a big role in front office decisions. I think the spreadsheet folks would not have cranked out super-optimistic projections about Hanley (or Pablo for that matter). They would have seen some pretty big red flags.

    Just so you know Yankee game threaders are every bit as negative as Red Sox game threaders, even with their big fat lead, here's a sample of some of the last posts from the NYY Fans Forum last night: -This sluggish performance stuff is exactly what worries me come playoff time. If they can’t get “up” for the Red Sox they can’t get up for anyone. Plus Boone basically throwing in the towel when it’s only 4-1. -Looks like the Yankees just wanted 2 days off in a row here. -Wasn’t Chance Adams the big hot prospect a few seasons ago? -Of all the guys who stepped up this season and everyone is wondering if they're for real, Voit is the guy I'm most concerned about. He's looked terrible since before the all star break and shows no signs at all of hitting for power or anything else. -Considering the pitchers that were used against us tonight that is about as sad of an offensive performance as you'll ever get. 3 hit by Pawtucket. Pathetic!

    Any chance we bring Moreland back? Just kidding, really. But sometimes he can be impressive. He's just such a chronic tease with the staying on the field part.

    I'll answer these two. 1. I didn't blame Ben at all for 2014. 2. Pablo has been done to death. As for the Hanley and Castillo signings: With Hanley, first of all, the idea that we got any kind of discount has never really made much sense to me. His recent history was incredibly erratic and injury-plagued. Secondly, they didn't have a position for him. By sticking him in left field we were virtually assured that the only value he would generate was with his bat, so it was like acquiring another DH at 22 million a year. The Castillo signing was basically indefensible. He's never been anything more than a borderline major leaguer.

    There are a lot of questions that are just impossible to answer. We don't know how the extra postseason workload affected their arms either. You can look at the case of Keith Foulke, who was a very durable arm up until Tito worked him like the proverbial rented mule in the 2004 postseason. Foulke's arm was never the same after that.

    I agree with you. To me the idea that a guy like Rick Porcello, a seasoned veteran, and in the always-crucial walk year, would do a lackadaisical job preparing himself for the season is just dumb.

    Exactly. Squeeze every last nickel out of it. As a goodwill gesture to season ticket holders, their names will be entered in a drawing to determine who actually throws the stones. There may be a small processing fee.

    As much as we crap on our GM's, Duquette, Epstein, Cherington and Dombrowski delivered piles of playoff teams and 4 championships. Not too bad.

    Firing's too good. I suggest stoning him to death at Fanueil Hall. They can sell tickets and make a bit of extra revenue off it.

    I don't really see the parallel. Cherington was chastisted for 3 main things IMO: 1) Last place finishes. 2) Pablo/Hanley/Castillo. 3) The 2015 pitching staff.

    I read some of the actual quotes from LeVangie, who apparently was the driving force behind it. My impression was that they were genuinely concerned about the effects of the postseason run and the extra innings pitched in relief etc. LeVangie called it 'cautionary'. I don't think it was some grand scheme to have them stronger later in the season.

    They've been known to change their minds, of course. And I think Bogey signed for less than they would have expected. So there's probably still some hope of keeping Mookie. But it sure won't be easy.

    What some folks may have forgotten is that the Sox publicly stated that it was unrealistic to think they could keep all of Mookie, Sale and Bogaerts long term. Then they extended Sale and Bogaerts...
