  1. Kopech was not non-impact, because he was one of the two big pieces that got us Sale.
  2. It never hurts to explore, no. But realistically, you're pretty unlikely to find a trade partner who will give you back something that's obviously better than what you're giving up. There are reasons why you just don't see a guy like Devers get traded.
  3. Those were all deadline trades, so they sort of fit in a separate category. The classic small-market move is 'selling high' like the Rays did with Archer and others.
  4. Yeah, I thought it was an excellent joke when it was referred to as the 'Punto trade'.
  5. I thought he had a lot to do with the Beckett & Lowell trade. It only makes sense that he would swoop in when Theo was on hiatus.
  6. Tampa Bay makes small-market moves and they do it brilliantly. But we can't really follow their model. However, snagging their former mastermind Friedman would be nice.
  7. That's a fair rule. Another is that Kimmi has to vote for a post other than one that's adamantly pro-Ben.
  8. Ben Cherington's record as a GM is difficult to assess. For every point there's one or more counterpoints. Point: He won a championship. Counterpoint: 3 last place finishes. Point: He made 3 albatross signings in the same year (Pablo, Hanley, Castillo). Counterpoint: At least one of those was forced on him by Lucchino. Point: He left the team in great shape for the next GM. Counterpoints: He left those albatross contracts. He left very little in major league ready pitching. Some of what he left, like Betts, was left to him by the previous GM. Adding to all that is that he has never had any other GM job you could use for further evaluation.
  9. You got it. They raise bloody hell here on Talksox!
  10. Yeah, I think it might be more useful to presume that the other party doesn't really like giving you back twice as much as you're giving them. If you trade Devers you're more likely to get back a package of prospects that MIGHT turn into double the value, and MIGHT turn into dust.
  11. You know there are quite a few Astros fans going 'Why the hell didn't we re-sign Morton?' today.
  12. Is Greinke a postseason chocker?
  13. Lucchino was not all bad as far as some of the baseball moves. He did hire Theo, after all. And he was instrumental in the 2012 trade with the Dodgers, per this article. https://www.espn.com/boston/mlb/story/_/id/8323305/boston-red-sox-los-angeles-dodgers-blockbuster-trade-anatomy
  14. Yep. Too fat for the outfield now.
  15. Mookie Betts was a 5th rounder.
  16. They actually announced it?
  17. I suspect they have, yes. But why wouldn't we factor Devers into the equation? It was the same year.
  18. They all deserve a lot of credit for the rings.
  19. What other possible explanation could there be for these paragons of durability to miss time like that?
  20. On the search to replace DD, one thing I did not realize was that Friedman's contract with the Dodgers runs out this year and he hasn't signed a new one yet. Maybe Henry throws some crazy money at him? There's no luxury tax on that, John!
  21. Mookie Betts would have been one of those little guys.
  22. Peter Abraham seems pretty sure JD will opt out. https://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/redsox/2019/10/06/martinez-decision-staying-dictates-red-sox-path-offseason/VkeESsgwmu5rVfTBgDzltM/story.html
  23. I've knocked Cherington for a bunch of things myself. The last place finishes were no fun. But on the flip side, he won one title and he put a lot of pieces in place for the next title.
  24. That was the year he signed Rafael Devers (August/13). That takes a bit of the sting out of the 2013 draft, doesn't it?
  25. A trade for Betts has to bring back a legit pitching prospect or two.
