  1. I caution against reading too much into any of it. Henry did approve the trade for Cashner, which was overlooked because it happened early and because he pitched like s***. Also, I doubt that Henry disagreed with DD about everything after the WS. Maybe just about the overall philosophy DD was espousing. And Henry certainly can't disown the Sale extension. He went on record about how they didn't want to make the same mistake they made with Lester et cetera.
  2. John Henry is a smart man and he understands very well the balances between the short-term and long-term, and between making money and putting a team on the field that keeps fans interested.
  3. cp, a lot of fans love the blame game, and it's not just DD who has had the finger pointed at him for this year's failures. Cora has been raked on the coals pretty good for the spring training program and other issues. A few here have called for him to be fired too. And our pitching coaches have already been canned.
  4. Any chances the Red Sox have to contend in 2020 depend heavily on the questionable health and effectiveness of SPE. (Might as well start using an acronym for Sale, Price and Eovaldi.)
  5. 1) moon's statement was sarcasm. 2) Please see this thread I started on the topic. https://www.talksox.com/forum/threads/19588-Are-the-playoffs-really-a-crapshoot
  6. We know that the Red Sox are totally overhauling their pitching management, that was started before Bloom was hired. I must point out though, that our pitching, while awful in 2019, served us pretty well in 2018, including Price, obviously.
  7. Yep, awesome decisions can be made in hindsight.
  8. Yep, screw the titles.
  9. So why wouldn't he stick around now that Dave is gone? Another logic fail, Larry.
  10. You're a brutal man, Larry. First of all, JD was a great signing by DD-not just the player but the contract structure. Secondly, it was obviously an organizational decision not to go into sell mode last July.
  11. JD has done nothing to hurt his value salary-wise, but as you say, he's gotten 2 years older, and age/contract length are the real issues.
  12. The Bloom is off the rose.
  13. Blooming idiot.
  14. Frankly, teams shouldn't be giving 10 year deals to anyone. But someone will always be willing to do it, as we saw with Harper and Machado.
  15. It's kind of a monster outlier in this size data set. What's especially incredible is the futility of those teams in the LDS round. 3 wins and 21 losses.
  16. Here's something that fascinates me: Over the last 20 years, 3 teams, Atlanta, Minnesota, and Oakland, have made the postseason, including Wild Card games, a combined total of 29 times. Results: Elimination in Wild Card Game - 5 (and no wins) Elimination in LDS - 21 Elimination in LCS - 3 Appearances in World Series - 0 If the playoffs really are a pure crapshoot, these teams have been INCREDIBLY snakebit.
  17. Right, but if he opts out, that could impact what they do about Mookie.
  18. It's an imperfect rhyme.
  19. Aren't you the same fellow who, whenever it's pointed out that 2003 'closer by committee' was a bust, points out that by the playoffs the bullpen was actually pretty good? Maybe it was someone else.
  20. Or Romero the Zero!
  21. The first big decision comes from JDM.
  22. One little side issue I'd like to raise is 'luck' vs. 'randomness'. I think there are some shades of difference between the two terms when applied to baseball, and there is also some crossover. For me, pure luck is something like Tony Clark's double bouncing into the stands in Game 5 of the 2004 ALCS and preventing what could have been the series-winning run from scoring. Pure randomness is something like a starting pitcher not having his best stuff on that particular day, as may have been the case with Cole in Game 1 of the WS. (On that point I'll refer once again to Mike Mussina's neat theorem that in 32 starts he would have everything working in 8 starts, nothing working in 8 starts, and something working in 16 starts.)
  23. It was Pedro's pitch count that was the issue. Grady was basically instructed by Theo to not let Pedro throw more than 105 pitches. Grady defied the order. It was ballsy of him, I'll say that much.
