    You said they were using a Moneyball approach to rebuilding. That was refuted, because it's incorrect, and the point was made that a team in true rebuilding mode shouldn't be expected to contend, because "Rebuilding" is blowing up the team and starting from scratch, which is what the Cubs are doing. The signing of a guy like Maholm happens when a rebuilding team needs to add cheap players in order to fill out the roster while moving some other assets.

    By good year i'm talking a playoff run. You don't believe that Valentine's focus on fundamentals and a new, stricter conditioning team will have an impact in the win column: I do. You massively undervalue the talent of this lineup and the top three of this starting rotation: I don't. You think that every possible thing that can go wrong with this team will go wrong: I don't. You think that none of the low-risk acquisitions made so far will pan out: I think they'll get league-average innings from one of those pitchers. In conclusion, while there will be problems like every other season, there's no reason for me to believe that an improvement in clubhouse culture is not going to help this team maximize its potential. This is a good team, and if you think otherwise, feel free to do so. However, if you feel that you can berate me because i take a more optimistic view of what the season will be the Red Sox, then expect me to promptly tell you to go f*** yourself. Otherwise, we can agree to disagree.

    This is what i mean. Not handle the playoffs, but handle a big city like Boston. Kinda like Greinke, but with a lot less crazy.

    First off, basically any ML player is a good addition if you don't factor cost into the equation. Second, Garza's character has come into question several times this offseason. I remember reading the rumors since 2008 that Garza has trouble handling the bright lights (that game 7 against Boston nonwithstanding) and that's supposedly the main reason the Yankees backed off from the guy. I'm not sure he would be able to succeed in Boston, but of course, that's just my opinion.

    The rebuilding period of the Cubs has absolutely nothing to do with a Moneyball approach. And the fact that they will not compete in the short term should be expected. That is the very definition of rebuilding: Sacrificing the short term and focusing on the long term future of a team by blowing up the current core.

    The last time Bartolo pitched before 2011 he sucked and was averaging 89 MPH on his FB. Garcia could barely crack 90. Both had legit injury and ineffectiveness issues. Let's cut the ********.

    Fred, i don't think you understand the definition of "depth" under this scenario. "Depth" are guys you stash in the Minors in order to see if they may amount to something, while not counting on them. You're too busy bashing the pitchers to see them for what they are: Second-tier options. There doesn't have to be a specific order to how you fill out your roster. If there is an order i had no idea about it. And sometimes, you may just catch lightning in a bottle like the Yanks did last year. I'm trying to clear up the way I was defining depth by the way. Not saying Fred doesn't know what the word "depth" means.
