  1. The problem with WAR and catcher value is that WAR's formula doesn't have a reliable catcher defense component, and it's heavily affected by games played, which gives Salty an edge right off the bat. Catcher is a defense-first position, and Salty, even with his improvement, is still a terrible catcher. Also, Salty's offensive season was fueled by an impossible-to-sustain .372 BABIP. It's more about you overvaluing Salty for what is more likely than not a mirage. And for the record, Salty had all of eight more OPS points than McCann, and wRC+ (a superior metric to OPS) has McCann as having had the better offensive season 122-117. I am also not American and can therefore be a bit more objective regarding this subject.
  2. Salty couldn't hold McCann's jock strap, and again, the problem with Tanaka is that he's a massive gamble. You just don't know how his stuff will translate to MLB.
  3. He said "adding two reliable setup men" not "signing two reliable setup men". The idea of bringing one or both from within was never ruled out. A good FO, though, makes moves for both the short and long term when a championship window opens up, as it has for the Red Sox. Your logic is terrible.
  4. The funny thing is that Miami is cleaning Detroit's clock. Not exactly how you wanna finish the season.
  5. Sox are proud owners of homefield advantage throughout the playoffs.
  6. Last chance for the A's
  7. A's rallying. 7-5 in the 7th
  8. Pence is also extremely durable and consistent, playing in no less than 154 games and only once OPS'ing under .780 while hitting more than 20 homers every year since he became a full-time regular.
  9. For luxury tax calculation purposes, Lackey's making the 11 +, not the 16.
  10. jung, is Adam Dunn a free swinger? Because he barely takes the bat off his shoulder yet he strikes out a metric ton. Correlation =/= causation.
  11. I mentioned him before. It's someone else.
  12. That's what i meant, but i worded it weirdly.
  13. And even if Ellsbury does re-sign with the Sox, they should still give the kid a chance. An OF of JBJ, JE and Victorino would be death to all things flying and every fan of run prevention's wet dream.
  14. Right, because a 23-year-old like Bradley posting a .374 OBP in AAA (.404 career in MiLB) is comparable to a guy who had to repeat several levels in the minors , and never had the offensive upside or advanced approach that Bradley has. You are grasping at straws here. I don't even get what your point is. The sox have enough OF depth to give the kid a chance to take his lumps at the MLB level. I just don't understand how someone who keeps pining for s***** players to get chances at the MLB level can find so many caveats to guys with legitimate talent and upside like WMB and Bradley getting their shots, especially with the overall depth of the Sox as a team and their farm system. It is completely baffling.
  15. Or if Doubront improves his overall conditioning. They may tire of his lack of work ethic and do away with him.
  16. Except that his point wasn't about JBJ striking out a lot , but rather on-base skills in general. You are combining two points which have absolutely nothing to do with each other. As for your narrative about JBJ having poor contact skills, you are incorrect. With few precious exceptions, his approach will yield strikeouts since he is a patient hitter, and works the count. His high OBP is well worth the price of admission here, and you gotta take one with the other.
  17. Juan Uribe, him of the career .298 OBP? You just managed to make a completely incorrect point comparing Moustakas who is a by and by free swinger (3.85 P/PA) to WMB, who has decent plate discipline (4.18 P/PA, right above league average) but has problems with a specific pitch in a specific part of the strike zone. WMB also showed significant improvement after coming back from the minors. You can't base an analysis of what WMB will be, or is, based on a 300 PA sample. That is ridiculous. If it was one of your s***** binky players you'd be clamoring for patience, but since it's a guy with actual talent, well then, f*** him. Then right after that you manage to contradict your own point by saying you could "stand" two guys who are just as bad at getting on base, but either feature a worse or similar glove, and less offensive upside. Are you serious with this? Please stop.
  18. And just when it seemed like the Mariners had a chance to do something, the A's score three runs. Goddamn i hate the Fat Toad.
  19. This isn't even a topic of discussion given the player in question though. JBJ is anything but a base clogger. Dude ranks a solid 70 in the 20-80 scale in speed. He just needs to refine his base-stealing a bit more. It comes later for some guys.
  20. I'll believe that when i see you calling out your "friend" Ted for harassing me. I've never seen you go "What the f*** is wrong with you Ted? Stop needling User" have i? Anyways, this discussion has run its course. Let's focus all our energy into helping the Mariners pull off a miracle and actually score a couple of runs against General Cheating Fatass.
  21. Bartolo getting the Mariano strike zone tonight. Ugh.
  22. Mariners had first and second with nobody out, and the runner at second didn't even touch third. God they suck.
  23. It's looking like the Mariners aren't going to try to make this a ballgame. God i hate Colon.
  24. No one's happier than me my good friend Fred. However, i should be able to bask in the glory of my predictions after your good friend spent all offseason harassing those who thought this team had a chance? I would appreciate it if you refrained from stirring the pot in the future as well. a700 is a big boy, and he can defend himself (and cheat at fantasy baseball) pretty well all by himself.
  25. Bartolo Colon, please eat yourself to death, you cheating prick.
