  1. Actually you're right. I forgot that Holliday arrived through a trade mid-season in 2009 and was later re-signed, which is why he only played 63 games with St. Louis. Point stands though.
  2. That's convenient.
  3. Money aside, i'd like to see Cano, Choo, Napoli and Ellsbury in the Sox lineup next season. Unfortunately, money does matter.
  4. No he didn't. It's very well known Pedro pretty much convinced the Sox to give Ortiz a shot, who was on the Yankees' radar, before they made a move. It was a point of exasperation for Georgie boy up to the day he died given the way Ortiz has punished the Yanks.
  5. But we can listen and interpret what the FO is saying, and they're saying they're not signing these big contracts anymore. Interesting discussion though.
  6. Actually they kinda do, and they listen. If it wasn't for Pedro's pitch, Ortiz would've never been a Red Sox.
  7. Holliday's problem has been time lost. He's lost essentially a season's worth of games with various maladies. The point of mentioning the roiders is exactly that cheating is what allowed them to live up to the contract, so they don't count when evaluating a supposedly clean player. That would be foolish. Beltran lost essentially two full seasons due to various injuries, and sucked in 2005, hardly justifying his contract.
  8. There really isn't. That's a pipe dream. Lucchino has pretty much confirmed the Sox aren't doling out any more super-long term contracts. This is conjecture on your part. Interesting discussion, but pretty much impossible unless Cano literally fell on the Sox' lap. @mark.
  9. Another example of this is the original 100+ million contract Albert Pujols signed. Yet look at the one he signed now. There's a world of difference between signing a player smack dab in the middle of his prime, and a player getting ready to exit it.
  10. Because there's no precedent for this other than players who use steroids? "Physical condition" matters very little when age arrives. Your assessment about how much money he's getting is correct. Also keep in mind that this is the main reason why he'd sign as a 2B. He'll get much more money signing as the best 2B available.
  11. How old was Cabrera when he signed his contract? Oh right, not 31.....
  12. Ramirez roided, Giambi roided, Sabathia looks about done, Holliday has not lived up to his contract. Beltran got injured/underproduced for several seasons. Cabrera, and that's about it.
  13. Why does it matter? Why would he change positions? He'd get a larger contract as a 2B.
  14. Why keep arguing with you if you're just going to keep basing these assumptions on your guts and your argument rather than reality?
  15. If you adjust Ortiz' FG WAR to the positional value of an excellent 1B, his 2013 season was worth 21 million dollars. Assuming that Cano will start declining halfway through his contract (and this is an extremely safe assumption) then no, he won't be worth 25 million per during the life of an 8-year contract. He'd struggle to be worth 20 per, even with the overall inflation of dollars per FG's WAR formula.
  16. Because: A) What makes you think Cano will change positions? He's arguably the best 2B in the game. B ) The Red Sox FO knows that as a 1B, Cano's value diminishes tremendously, making this a horrible idea. C) Pretty much no big-money contract to a player about to exit his prime has been even remotely successful. Ever.
  17. They could get Ellsbury , Napoli and Drew for less than what the sum-total contract for Cano will be. Also, there's enough precedent to safely conclude that Cano will not be living up to his salary the second half of his contract. You are making the assumption that Cano will hit as well as he does now in the latter part of his 30's. That spits in the face of logic. Cano's contract will be an albatross, just like essentially any other big-money contract given to a player exiting his prime. There's no arguing with father time.
  18. Pujols' first 100 million contract was possibly the only one we can assume was a non-roided exception.
  19. So because you can easily afford a stupid investment, you should do it?
  20. His WAR (not oWAR) would be significantly lower since there is a positional value component attached to it. And even if his numbers looked good, they just wouldn't be as good if he was playing 1B instead of 2B, and this is common sense mark. And you're the one missing the bigger picture here. The Sox' job isn't to worry about a team that didn't even make the playoffs last year. Their job is to set up their roster for immediate and future success.
  21. Cano significantly loses value if he moves from 2B to 1B. A significant portion of his value is tied to his position. As a 1B he'd be very good, but not elite or best in the game, therefore not a candidate to make elite position player money. Also, no, Cano is not the "one player you can bet on for the next 8 years". He's in his 30's, and you'd need for him to stay in a MIF position and play it at least competently for his contract to make sense. Also, so you're saying that because the Sox made a s***** signing once and lived through it they should continue to do so? That's awful logic. I'd like to see them stick it to the Yankees to, but not by handcuffing themselves to a dumb contract like the A-Rod one. That doesn't make any sense.
  22. I'm sure Cano's representation already knows this. Like you, i don't see the fit for Cano. He's going to get a stupid contract he won't live up to.
  23. Robertson will close. What they lack is a setup man with experience in front of him.
  24. Youk, I think BTR wants you to ban VA, then ban yourself. I would argue against it, as it's better to see the both of you bow your heads in shame for doubting the awesomeness otherwise known as the 2013 Boston Red Sox.
  25. Cano doesn't make sense for the Sox. He loses a ton of value if he moves to 3B or 1B. Most of his value comes from the fact that he's a MIF that hits like a 1B.
