  1. Of the Nationals pitchers, i find Strasburg to be the least desirable because of cost, and injury risk. That's my personal opinion though.
  2. He could also be worth his deal is his numbers decline because of age and not injury, as the market keeps inflating.
  3. Because Pal's point is that they should go for pitching via trade. That is a different argument. I'm saying they should sign Shields and keep their prospects.
  4. Yet Strasburg, because of his mechanics, presents an inherently high risk himself. I'm sure the Sox have looked into this as well.
  5. You are presenting an entirely different point, but i agree. Let them sign Shields and keep their prospects.
  6. You mean Sheilds has a "projected" downwards trajectory. He's been nothing if not consistently good the last 4-5 years.
  7. Also, they could just sign Shields and keep their prospects.
  8. ....and if Vasquez turns into an offensive black hole (which he very well might), then the "FO is stupid for trading Swihart" chants will begin.
  9. Defense is not like offense. Defense tends to translate almost perfectly to the MLB level.
  10. With the way offense has deflated over the past few years, i'd do my best not to trade top-tier offensive prospects for pitching. Swihart's about as sure a thing as you can find from the C position both offensively and defensively. I get that you're in "all in" mode right now, but for the winning to be sustainable, they need to have some semblance of a plan for the future as well.
  11. No it really doesn't. At least not for the Red Sox.
  12. Are you serious with this ********?
  13. Sources say the feeling around the industry is that Shields won't even be able to break $100 million anymore, and that Scherzer may have a hard time beating Detroit's initial $144 million offer because of how they've waited. I don't buy it on Scherzer, because it's an ownership-level decision, but i'd swing on 4/100 for Shields.
  14. http://www.spotrac.com/mlb/philadelphia-phillies/cliff-lee/ No contract breakdown i've found specifies that Cliff Lee earns the buyout no matter what. The Phillies have to exercise it only if the option becomes guaranteed, which he can only do via the requirements mentioned above.
  15. Both of the requirements need to be met in order for the option to vest. If the option doesn't vest, you don't have to pay the buyout. What Palodios just posted verifies it. Requirements 1 AND 2 need to be met for the option to become guaranteed.
  16. You misunderstand. The discussion referred to Lee costing the Sox 37.5 million if they traded for him and he bombed. What i'm telling Bellhorn is that if Lee doesn't pitch 200 innings, the buyout doesn't have to be paid.
  17. Why would the buyout have to be paid out if the option doesn't vest?
  18. I'm sure he's very worried about what you think about him while counting his millions, enjoying his total power over the franchise he works for, and building the next great Cubs team.
  19. Lucchino even admitted (more than once if i recall correctly) that the Lackey and Crawford signings were his babies.
  20. Werth would have been a much better fit than Crawford, and has proven to be much more productive, albeit with some injury issues.
  21. I'm assuming Youk to LF actually, but i reckon that's kinda far-fetched.
  22. For 2011, they should have kept Beltre, but still done the Gonzalez trade imo.
  23. Do you really need to ask Pal? One of the main benefits of steroid use, is extremely quick healing. Ask Andy Pettite.
  24. But.....you're rationalizing here. You're making an excuse to justify the fact that you're flat out wrong here......
  25. With a couple of headcases on the team (Hanley, Buchholz) and a bunch of young kids (XB, Vasquez, half the BP) this may be a pretty important step for the Sox. Other teams (like the Brewers) excel at unblocking the mental issues some of their players may have (with Carlos Gomez being a notable example) while the Sox seem like they're just terrible at handling players with fragile egos or mental blocks (Daniel Bard, Buccholz). It's easy to call players prima donnas or whatever from the comfort of one's couch, but this game takes a massive mental toll. Most guys who are out of the game at a young age are usually driven out by their minds instead of their bodies.
