  1. Again, iortiz will never, ever let facts or logic get in the way of a good argument. Papelbon is just not that good anymore, and he pitches in a weaker division and a weaker league overall. Bottom line results have been good, but it's easy to conclude they probably wouldn't be the same in the AL East, even in the current offense-suppressed environment.
  2. They have little value because you honestly (and this is not a personal attack, mind you) overvalue your intelligence and devalue the intelligence and ability of others. Not a good trait to have in the world of business.
  3. Elktonnick has. a700 called MVP blind because of his valuation of stats. Also, let's say someone here didn't play. Does that make them any less of a fan? That just sounds conceited and, quite frankly, pretty douchey. I played, and i've coached little league, but i don't think any less of a fan who didn't play or coach. Also, this is a forum for baseball discussion. The argument for/against stats is, by definition, baseball discussion. It'd be easier if we had something more substantive to talk about, but alas, it's the slow part of the offseason.
  4. Unless health is a problem, Koji will be fine imo. I'm more worried about Ortiz tbh.
  5. Then Lucchino had a lot more power back then than he does now, and that's almost certainly the reason Theo bailed on the Sox. Now a700 shows up and calls him and idiot blablabla even though not only does he not know the full story, but it makes sense as a literal promotion, and getting out from under a boss you don't see eye to eye with. FO types are people just like the rest of us.
  6. We are malcontents is what we are.
  7. But spent a pittance on Koji, and won a WS with him. There's two sides to every story.
  8. I think he convinced Henry.
  9. He also literally just made that argument up, unsurprisingly. The point being brought up is that you need both scouting and stats for the most effective type of player evaluation.
  10. Not to beat a dead horse, but i was just reading an article by AJ Casavell where he talks about the impact of defensive shifts. In it he states that the statistical revolution is something we fans are "just catching up on" as Front Offices had been devaluing wins and RBI's and looking at more advanced analytic stats way before Bill James became mainstream. Now, a700 made a point saying that the Yankees weren't winning during their dynasty years because of advanced statistical analysis. How does he, or any of us, know this? The truth is, that while might (financial might) is right in baseball, some of the most successful low-budget and even high-budget teams combine stats analysis with scouting presence. I find it funny how someone who watches the game casually thinks their "watch the games" mentality is superior to the tools used by those who do this for a living. Too much overvaluing of self-awareness and intelligence not just here, but all over the internet. /endrant.
  11. Not only is he not that good anymore, he's disliked by fellow Phillies players and considered a clubhouse cancer. The Phillies can't give him away. But hey, Rivera highway or whatever.
  12. iortiz won't let facts and logic get in the way of a good argument.
  13. If the wrong conclusion is reached, then the statistic was misunderstood, and we're back at square one.
  14. And no specific poster was signaled. He's just trying to stir the pot. Good response though.
  15. Lucchino said it himself. He knows it, as it was posted here multiple times. Playing dumb, he is.
  16. This post^ is clutch.
  17. Beautifully presented and absolutely correct. Those who completely dismiss stats just don't understand them imo.
  18. I'll bite and present them later.
  19. Pretty accurately =/= 100% correct, foolproof= certain, and of course, stats don't account for injury, so i assumed that was obvious from the argument. Then again, assuming makes an ass out u and i.
  20. This is wrong on so many levels. First off, over a larger sample, advanced statistics can pretty accurately predict what a player will do. Second, most of those "affected by other player" stats are considered incomplete and archaic (RBI's and wins, i'm looking at you). Third, as Kimmi said, the recipe isn't complete without all of the ingredients. FO's these use both scouting presence and statistical analysis to make their decisions, but in the end, there's just no foolproof way to accurately predict what a player(s) is (are) going to do in the future.
  21. Except that Crawford/Lackey were Lucchino signings. This is common knowledge.
  22. Things will always "overachieve your initial expectations" because you almost always have terribly negative expectations.
  23. Brandon Beachy's electric, but he's as much of an injury risk as Billingsley. I'd like to see one, or both of them, sign as depth.
  24. You do know MVP and i would kill a700/Fred in like three seconds right?
  25. The numbers are there. Saying Koji's season was the product of luck is asinine.
