  1. The title of the thread is "your realistic expectations" not best case scenarios. Best case scenario is the Red Sox repeat their 2018 record and win it all but that ain't happening either.
  2. You know what Don Meredith said about If and buts.
  3. 12 was your bottom.number 10 is my top number 50 innings is the total for the season . He never throws more than 100 pitches and then only late in September in perhaps his last 2 starts. Sox do not make the playoffs.
  4. If Henry is good at his word that Bloom is in charge of baseball operations then not at all. And I believe him until proven otherwise.
  5. Nesn's bottom line has no affect on the the Boston Red Sox balance sheet. Nesn is a joint venture and separate entity financially. The few games Sale will pitch in 21 will have a miniscule impact on nesn viewership and balance sheet.
  6. My point is that the Red Sox aren't going to risk Sale no matter what he Sale wants to do, there is absolutely no financial incentive for them to do so. I see 21 as a lost season financially for MLB. Moreover Cora's history managing starting pitchers makes it even more unlikely that one sees Sale for any more than ten games comes late August or September.
  7. It is totally unrealistic IMHO. Remember how Cora babied him in 2019 during ST. The leopard doesn't change his spots. Cora will not be pitching Sale more than 50 pitches his first start which is not likely until August which will be barely 18 months post TJ.
  8. If Fauci's assessment is correct, it is highly unlikely that states such as California New York Massachusetts etc will allow MLB to fill stadiums anytime in 21. The Sox may pitch Sale in 21 but not every fifth day even in August. They will be very cautious with him. Without fannies in the seats there is little financial incentive to do so. If Sale pitches 50 innings in MLB regular season games in 21 I will be very surprised.
  9. The realistic projection is that the 2021 season will once again be truncated. It is impossible to project what will be the state of the game once Sale is ready to return. For what it is worth unless there are fans in the stands and teams are allowed to play before full houses, I just do not see Boston rushing Sales return. In other words IMHO it impossible to make any meaningful projection on how many innings Sale pitches next. If I were to guess it will be fewer than would have been normal in a non covid world.
  10. They got him. Wonder what they are paying him?
  11. I have thought that for a long time.
  12. Of course it is. but then so is the observation that the sox went all the way to PR just for professional courtesy since neither Cora nor Bloom are saying anything but who they are interviewing. What isn't speculation is that no one can guarantee what the 2021 season will look like. And there is a lot to consider. What also isn't speculation that some in the national media have commented that Cora is certain to be offered a national broadcast job. What isn't speculation is that Boston WENT to see Cora in the PR rather then the other way around which tends to add credence to the premise that Boston is pursuing Cora not the reverse.
  13. The fact that Boston FO people flew to Puerto Rico to interview Cora strikes me as more than professional courtesy. It appears that Boston may be more interested in Cora than Cora is interested in Boston. Being strictly pragmatic, Cora knows he will manage again. He must have questions about managing next year anywhere. He probably can easily get a broadcast job but no team can guarantee that 2021 will not be played under some type of quarantine regime. If your situation is pleasant in Puerto Rico with your family do you really want to be separated from them for an entire baseball season if there is another quarantine regime and no one can assure anyone that there won't be. So there may be a number of non baseball reasons that Boston either doesn't re hire Cora or that Cora doesn't want to manage anywhere until this covid thing has passed.
  14. Like him or not John Henry's track record on sports entrepreneurship is simply incredible. He has turned a struggling baseball franchise, the Boston Red Sox, with a passionate fan base but a borderline competent ownership and an outdated stadium into a multi billion dollar success story. But what is really incredible he did exactly the same thing with Liverpool of the English Premier League. Love him or hate him, I simply would never bet against John Henry.
  15. My father who coached baseball after WW2 in the 40s and 50s believed that big guys like Judge and Stanton were not the ideal baseball players because they were simply too big. The truly great ball players over the years looked more like Mookie Betts than Judge and Stanton.
  16. So your position is Alex Spier misquoted Kennedy or Kennedy does not know what he is talking about but you who has no access to MLB's financial records do?
  17. I went through all the data. Kennedy's statement is consistent with MLB's projection of a 4 Billion dollar loss if they played half a season with no fans and prorated salaries. Now others may dispute that but that has been MLB's position from the outset and Kennedy is merely restating MLB 's position.
  18. The Orioles have other expenses besides payroll
  19. Except that is not what he actually said according to Spier.
  20. Not at all. The plain text says operating losses. If he had meant reduced revenue he would have said reduced revenue. I am sure Kennedy knows the difference To conclude he meant something other than what he said requires interjecting ones own bias into the plain text. In any case whether it is revenue or bottom line losses. we are unlikely to see many clubs except those with owners who are willing to assume the risk of large losses suddenly go on a spending spree.
  21. Actually that is not what Spier reported. Here is the exact quote "@alexspeier Kennedy says MLB teams lost over $100M per club this year. ‘We know we’re going to withstand operating losses. We’re prepared for that.’ Says the Sox expect to invest in team in a fashion similar to what they’ve done over last 20 years. Spier said Kennedy was talking about operating losses not reduced revenues.
  22. If Sam Kennedy is accurate that teams averaged losses of $100M each, few teams can endure such losses. Furthermore there is little certainty that 2021 will be a normal year that would permit packed stadiums. Under these circumstances, one would expect most owners to approach 2021 very cautiously when it comes to authorizing spending on FA contracts. This of course allows the most aggressive owners with deep pockets tremendous opportunities if they are willing to accept the risk.
  23. All interesting points. Not to quibble but Gibbons may not have wanted to take an interim job. I think we can all agree that Bloom has a lot of options to consider regarding a new manager and he will give nothing away until he is ready to do so.
  24. He may have finished behind Roenicke because it was an interim position. The larger point is speculation about the managerial position is the only news about the Red Sox that is keeping the club in the public eye. Chaim is doing a superb job of keeping everyone guessing. His public statements are masterful at saying absolutely enough to keep everyone interested without showing his hand. I have absolutely no idea whether Cora will be back and neither does anyone else outside a very close circle in the Red Sox front office and perhaps Alex Cora himself. Another point to consider there is a lot of chatter that Dombrowski maybe the next Chief of Baseball Operation for the Angels. If DD does get that job, will he fire Maddon and tap Cora to mange there ?
  25. Chaim Bloom's statement on the managerial search proves he is taking courses at the Bill Belichick school of public relations Two Boston Sportswriters Jason Mastrodonato and John Tomase upon hearing Bloom's remarks came to exactly opposite conclusions, one believing Cora will definitely be back, the other definitely not. Way to go Chaim!!! Keep them guessing.
