  1. Fobes reported that NESN lost a third of its viewers in 2014 per game from the year before. I don't have the 2015 stats but clearly viewership didn't go up. As much as I didn't want Orsillo to get the axe it is clear that the decline in viewership didn't help his cause. In the same vien, NESN ratings are probably a bigger factor than ballpark attendanc in Henry's calculus. Ben's fate was sealed by his weak attempts to construct a team which was killing NESN's ratings hence the reason for his being forced out.
  2. Extraordinary circumstances forced Boston to bring Swihart to the majors well before he was ready. If one wanted to get a fair representation of Swihart's defensive ability as a catcher the last month of the year was the only month worth considering. I haven't gone back to look at the record so I don't know how many times he caught Wright the last month of the year but one has to discount his performance with Wright to get a true picture of his relative defensive skills. In general one doesn't need sabermetrics to know that Swihart is the better hitter whereas Vasquez is the better defender. And Hanigan is somewhere in the middle on both and calls a good game. The problem for the Red Sox is a simple one to state but a difficult one to decide i.e. can Vasquez become a better hitter and or can Swihart become a better defender.
  3. Excellent statement on the proper role and value of sabermetrics in today's game.
  4. One of his ex Dodger teammates called Puig the worst person in baseball.
  5. XB was a terrific defender last year. He was a bona fide gold glove candidate
  6. Bogaerts should have won the gold glove, Pedroia has won one in the past. The problem with the Sox infield defense is Sandoval and HR if he plays first. You have an A at short and second and at best a C minus at third and at best a D at 1st. Sandoval and Ramirez bring the infield down to just over a C. If Swihart starts then it remains a C with Vasquez it approaches a C plus.
  7. Just shows how yesterday's top prospect can quickly become tomorrow's roster dump. Trading a player for cash considerations is about as low as you can go.
  8. Tony La Russa wants to win now. If Miller lives up to his potential and with Greinke the D-Backs will be contenders
  9. I am not a Mariners fan but I can't see the complaint. The got a starter who virtually guarantees them 200 innings in a pitcher's ball park. They gave up future potential in order to have a better chance to win now. They have a lot of money invested in Cano and Hernandez. They need to show some return on that investment by winning sooner rather than later.
  10. I personally think Smith is more likely to be the 7th or 8th inning guy than Koji or Tazawa. The biggest problem is Farrell's mismanagement of the bullpen. I recall Jim Palmer during Orioles Red Sox games being highly critical of Farrell's handling of the pen, particularly Farrell having guys warming up needlessly and never bringing them into the game. This is one of the Orioles and Showalter's specialties managing the bullpen workload. There is no question that the 2015 weak rotation early in the year contributed to burning out the pen. Nevertheless, Farrell has to do a better job managing when guys warm up and bringing guys into the game at the appropriate time.
  11. If that were to happen, the Red Sox would have the fattest corners in baseball, Prince and the Panda. It sounds like a situation comedy
  12. Of course he is going to manage the draft and international FA. he won't do the mundane tasks related to all those but he'll make all the important decisions. He is the chief of baseball operations and all that entails.
  13. You lost me when you said that DD's job is a narrow but important subset of Cherrington's. I believe Dombrowski has more real authority over baseball operations than Lucchino et al ever allowed Ben.
  14. Mariners needed a starter after losing Iwakuma to LA. Obviously they think more of Miley than Elias
  15. Looks like the trade results in an upgrade to the bullpen and a downgrade to a potential starter in the rotation. It appears to be an even trade in that respect. One has to wonder if Miley was traded in part for showing up Farrell this past year.
  16. Ke Rosenthal tweeted about 12:30 that it could be either Buchholtz or Miley. One can only hope that it is CB
  17. I'd rather see Kelly go than Miley
  18. It is an "overpay" considering he is only got a year left before he is a free agent.
  19. You raise a very good point. In today's game, you can't stand pat and wait for players to develop especially when your own farm system has been years away from producing effective pitchers both starters and relievers.
  20. I am glad Salty still playing just so it isn't in Boston.
  21. i don't mean to be rude but you have overpay on the brain. You are being wishful in your thinking that these players such as Price would have settled for substantially less than they did. The Red Sox tried the low ball approach with Lester and look what it got them. DD and Boston got their man and speculating on saving a few dollars here and there is as about an useful exercise as a cat chasing its tail.
  22. That is highly speculative on your part. You have no evidence to support your point of view other than wishful thinking. They weren't going to get a top notch starter via the trade route but only a 3,4 or 5 which they already have. That wasn't going to solve their problem. Regarding Kimbrel's salary 12 million for a closer of his quality is hardly an overpay as you call it. Papelbon made 13 million last year for the Nationals. Koji is over 40 and he had an injury to his wrist last year. It is simply prudent to get a quality closer when your former closer is as old as Koji coming off the type of injury he had. And I agree with 700 Boston needs more relievers. O'Day would be my wish.
  23. There are some who believe Koji is still a viable closer. To me the facts of his age and the nature of his injury make him highly suspect in 2016. That why I think the FO made the right move to shore up the back end of the bullpen first. Kimbrel was the best available. Also the Sox knew they weren't going to get the ace they needed by any trade unless that trade involved prospects plus Betts or Bogaerts.
  24. Because since I retired I can no longer afford to have my administrative assistant work weekends.
  25. This is where we disagree. We needed a closer. Kimbrel was the best available. His price was the four prospects. He may have been expensive but that isn't the same as saying we overpaid. We paid his market price in value. From the Red Sox perspective we gave up prospects who were not in a position to immediately help the big club like Kimbrel could. From my perspective, prospects have no value except in how they help the big club. The Sox needed a closer they got a closer. They only way it was an overpay is if the Sox could have gotten something in addition to Kimbrel for the four. I don't think so, or at least I don't think anything worth talking about.
