Well what we are really worried about is getting to kimbrel right. We are not concerned with the whole staff in bb/9 nor even the whole pen. There is only 1 AL closer that is better than Kimbrel in bb/9 and that is Osuna at 1.3 for 2017. Kimbrel pulled a 1.8. Nobody else even gets below 2.0 and most closers in the AL are closer to 3.0.
Clevland had the best pen in the AL last year. Closer had a good bb/9. The entire pen had a good bb/9. Their pen has a better bb/9 than ours as does the Angels pen. Twins and Sox pens were about tied for 3/4 for bb/9 in 2017. While Osuna pulled a 1.3 the rest of the Toronto pen did not pull a decent bb/9 in 2017. The point is that if you pull Kimbrel out of our bb/9 and pull the other closers out of the other pens, we probably fall to 5th in the AL, maybe 6th and our problem is not Kimbrel as long as we keep him closing only. Our problem is getting to Kimbrel after the closer leaves. That is not a great standing for a contending team still reliant on pitching. Still upper 3rd of the league for pen bb/9 but just barely.
