I'm sorry, but the way in which Bryce Harper was tossed tonight is just an abomination. It brings shame to all umpires, including myself. He was mad at a low strike call and walks out of the box while the umpire deals with hecklers in the dugout. Harper gets tossed for stepping out of the box. That is just pure BS. Harper didn't say anything about the strike call, although he was visibly upset, and was taking advantage of a brief stoppage of play. Whether or not he thought, or the umpire thought, he would be fined for stepping out is irrelevant. It is not the umpire's job to point anything out. In times of rule violations that don't really affect the game, we aren't supposed to say a thing. A player doesn't touch home plate, or any other base? Shut up, wait for the opposing coach to appeal if he would like to. A guy should not be thrown out simply for stepping out of the box. Umpires learn that if he wants to risk a fine, let him. They shouldn't be telling them not to do that. And then, as the Nationals' broadcasters said, basically everyone who came to the game tonight came to see Bryce Harper (even Yankee fans), the 22 year old (with the same birthday as me) who has been on an absurd tear over the last few weeks. The youngsters of the game are what bring people into the ballpark nowadays (trust me here, I'm going to see Mike Trout on Sunday). The umpire seemed to go out of his way to render everyone's night wasted, never mind the waste of money they now face after paying for the ticket.
