    To win in the post season, you're going to need starting pitchers, and the ones we have right now will probably be the ones we use.

    I believe so, but if he didn't, then add him to the list. My assumption in the original listing is that he has lost eligibility.

    I'm not saying they should invest in him if they know going in that he's going to need time to develop. I'm saying if they acquire him thinking he can start, and it turns out that he needs a bit of time to get going, they've got a guy in Carp who can keep them afloat until Abreu is ready. I agree, Carp probably can't do this on a regular basis (see: BABIP of .410), but certainly he can be a .265/.340/.460 hitter with 20 HR. That's plenty for an PH/insurance plan, which I think we agree is pretty much what you can expect him to be. A really nice bat off the bench and the first up to play 1B in a injury or fatigue situation.

    Bogaerts is a 155 game SS. He's not a guy you rotate around. You stick him at SS and you watch him stockpile silver sluggers and MVPs.

    I was thinking "Man what a platoon Mike Carp and Corey Hart would be". Hart absolutely murders LHP (career .896 OPS, 1.071 OPS in 2011). He's been hurt all year this year, and would likely take a 1 year deal, but only if he got guaranteed playing time, which would not work here. Bummer. That could have been monstrous. On the other hand, having a guy like Carp who, like Dojji said, crushes RHP, which is who you see in about 60-65% of your at bats, really would allow this team to be a bit more aggressive on the market for Abreu, since they have a guy who can perform at a high level if Abreu needs time to develop, or struggles initially.

    I'm holding off on my opinion on Rubby until next season. I think we're seeing a very fatigued arm right now, which is kind of expected since this is the first full season he's pitched since 2010 (had TJS in 2011, missed all of 2012). Control is the last thing to come. I am a little disappointed so far, but I think he'll make some nice strides. I would have liked to have seen Webster in the game last night instead of Rubby. I am dying to see what he can do in short stints like he did in spring training. His stuff was much more electric in ST than it was in the rotation.

    We went into this game with a 4 game lead for the AL's best record. He's not going to burn out Breslow, Tazawa, Workman, and Koji just so that he can have home field advantage and blow late leads because the bullpen is shot.

    Goodness. Abreu, Pedroia, Bogaerts, Middlebrooks around the infield? Sounds like death to LHP. Would be able to then sign McCann and absorb his splits.

    Yup I agree. The Sox are going to sweep the Yankees this weekend and really put a dent in their post season hopes. Bogaerts playing tonight. He'll go deep.

    Unbelievably, the Red Sox could have 9 preseason top 100 prospects next year. Bogaerts JBJ Owens Cecchini Barnes Ranaudo Betts Swihart Ball Not mentioning Manuel Margot, Jon Denney, or Luis Diaz, all of whom are major break out candidates for 2014.

    No. And I think that's a pretty big issue.

    And how many have been held because Farrell put on the shift and it prevented the runners? You can't make that kind of an excuse. Tazawa has allowed 32% of inherited runners to score. League average is 30%, so he's slightly above league average. But he's been much worse of late, based on the eye test (I can't find splits for IS%). Either way, in years past we had Bard who could come in and absolutely shut down an inning. Even Andrew Miller was able to do that to start the year (22% IS% this year). That's what we're missing. Getting the ball from the starter to Koji could be adventure.
