Almost certainly Beckett will start on Opening Day. Not only because of his success last season, but also because he's the only pitcher that Bobby V doesn't have a fantastic relationship with.

Bard was walking 9 per 9 IP when he had those numbers. He was also 21 years old. In each of his last 3 seasons, his BB/9 has decreased. In his career, he has allowed a .582 OPS against him. Do you really think that after seeing Bard an extra 1-2 times, hitters are going to be able to bump that 300 points and OPS .880 off of him like they did Lackey? Call me overly optimistic, but I just really do not see it happening. I think he'll have a season very similar to Alexi Ogando last year. About 170-180 IP. First half, domination. Second half, the innings start to catch up to him. Overall, probably a 13-14 win, 3.50 ERA season.

Went to a Red Sox store today. Found something awfully strange. They had players t shirts for 75% off. Obviously Papelbons was there but what was weird was the other player whose jersey was 75% off - Ortiz. Wonder what that's all about. I know he accepted arb, but it is still very strange. I think Beltre and VMarts jerseys went on sale last year right before they signed elsewhere.

1. Some scouts have evaluated Cecchini as talent that is as good as, or better than WMB. Also, Xander Bogaerts, who has HanRam type power and potential, is likely going to be moved to 3B because of his size, so if we dealt WMB, it wouldn't be like we're dealing out of a position of no depth. And this isn't even mentioning Kolbrin Vitek, a 1st rounder in 2010 who also plays 3B. 2. Yeah, he's got major offensive potential. But if you want a high caliber pitcher like Garza, you can't give up .200 hitting catchers. 3. Ranaudo has actually lose significant velocity, and was sitting 89-90 all last season. His inconsistency is maddening to a lot of scouts, and he is not pitching as advertised. A lot of scouts are beginning to project him as a relief pitcher. 4. Bogaerts should not be dealt, I agree with this. Realize this. Garza would be the Sox #2 or #3. If a pitcher of that caliber becomes available, you explore options, which is what I was doing. If we traded for Garza and won the WS in 2012, you wouldn't say anything about the prospects we lost. It's all about winning.

Fair enough, but I think for Garza, you have to package one of them in the deal. As for Marlon Byrd, his OPS has decreased in each of the past 4 years, so I'm not huge on that. Could be that if we make a deal w the Cubs, it's just for Garza, but it would cost a haul of prospects after seeing what the Nats just paid and what the Reds paid for Latos.

Come on guys, I'm just spitballin here! Cut me some slack! I added Soriano to the deal because I think, for $6mm, he could be a viable RF. We're not asking him to be a middle-of-the-order bat, but rather to be our #7 or #8 hitter in our lineup. And if we can get a .760 OPS, 25 HR, 80 RBI, and an .830+ OPS vs LHP from our #8 hitting RF for $6mm, I think that would be a fantastic deal. Not to mention, I really think it would give some leverage in the Garza deal. Almost tack it on as another prospect. So maybe Middlebrooks + Reddick + Lavarnway + Theo's Compenstion for Garza + Soriano + $$$. I don't think that's enough prospects to get it done, but I'm too tired to analyze further right now.

The main point is that we would get Garza in the deal, be able to move Bard to the bullpen as the closer where we know he dominates high-leverage situations (September withstanding), have Marmol/Jenks/Morales in the 7th inning, Jenks/Melancon in the 8th inning, and Bard in the 9th inning. It would give a lot of options and would make our rotation much better. Plus, if we got Soriano in the deal, he OPS'd .760 last season. It's not elite, but he's good for 20-25 HR a season, maybe 25-30 at Fenway, and he would add .100 points to last year's RF (which OPS'd a combined .652). And getting that RF production for around 6-7mm a season would be a very good deal. So, upgrade in the pen, upgrade at SP, upgrade in RF and have a RH bat who, by the way, has a career .867 OPS vs LHP and OPS'd .944 vs LHP in 2010.

Who is this? :harhar: I'm actually fine with Marmol. Had a bit of a down year last year. Make him a set up man with Melancon and Bard the closer, I think that'd be fine. I'm not sure if you were being sarcastic or not, but I like the idea.

I'd put Soriano in RF. Career 50.3 UZR in the OF over 6 seasons. Good arm strength. Speed consistent with Drew. I think he would be just find there.

I actually still really like WMB + Ranaudo + Bogaerts + Lavarnway for Garza + Soriano + enough money to take Soriano's contract down to 3/18. I think this is more and more likely based on this: Luckily both Theo and Hoyer are extremely familiar with the Red Sox farm system, so it only seems right that they would be able to work out a deal with Cherington.

If we were building a mister package for Gio and Bailey, we should build a monster package for Garza.

For Gio AND Bailey?!?! s***'s about to get reallllllly interesting! Gotta be something like WMB + Jacobs + Ranaudo + Kalish + Lavarnway. Maybe even tack on Alex Wilson to that and a lesser known. Hopefully they can get someone else back with it. (I'm bias and hoping for Sonny Gray, he's a Vandy kid and I've played golf with him a few times. Good guy).

Well. Obviously not whining to the media and giving them too much slack ended up in beer and chicken in the clubhouse. I'd much rather have the players have a distaste for the manager, but respect him and be a little bit disciplined than to have the players love the manager but have no respect for him and act like clowns in the clubhouse.
