  1. Youk is 33 and hasn't played 140 games since 2008. He's averaged 119 games/season over the past 3 years. HanRam is 28 and missed 140 games for the first time in his career last year. Like I said, I'll take HanRam over Youk any day. And when I say that, I mean going forward, HanRam is going to be the more productive player.
  2. Agree. A low-risk player is someone that you are not depending on at all, but has a high ceiling and if he approaches that ceiling, can offer very high rewards. If not, it doesn't matter because you weren't depending on him anyway. Colon, last year for the Yankees, started out as a long relief pitcher. They weren't looking at him as a SP except for maybe their #6 or #7. Then, when Hughes went down, Colon stepped in and threw really well, thanks in large part to all of the steroids in his elbow.
  3. You all can say what you want about HanRam and how he doesn't hustle and is a head case, but I guarantee that each and every one of you would be beyond thrilled to have his bat in the lineup every night. I'd take HanRam over Youk any day of the week. I'd throw Youk + Doubront/Weiland for him and if it stuck, I'd take it. I wouldn't overpay, though.
  4. Thank God!! I have all the respect in the world for Tek, but he was a liability on both sides of the ball. Also, I think Lavarnway is dished in a deal for either Gio Gonzalez, John Danks, or Andrew Bailey.
  5. Heyyy! I got two tickets to the Sox/Rays game at Fenway on Sunday, April 15th. Anyone else grab any tickets to this game? We're sitting in the RF roof deck.
  6. Don't worry guys - We're not getting Heath Bell. From everything I'm reading on twitter, he's going to the Marlins or the Blue Jays. I like the Thornton idea. Over the past 4 years, he's posted a 2.84 ERA with a 10.7 K/9 and a 2.8 BB/9. To put that into perspective, over the past 3 years, Bard has posted a 2.88 ERA with a 9.7 K/9 and a 3.5 BB/9. Having both if them at the back of the rotation (both are flamethrowers) would be pretty deadly. Lefties OPS .619, and righties OPS .672 off of Thornton, that's pretty solid. I'll take Thornton - Bard as my 8th/9th inning combo all day. Especially when that combination costs just over 1/2 of the price of Pap by himself.
  7. According to reports, Valentine is the new manager.
  8. That's a fantastic, insightful article. Props to Pete Abe. And thanks for posting, VA!
  9. Well, you gotta think - At this point the manager we need to straighten out this team is not the same manager we'll need for the long term. Right now, we need a stern voice who is going to come in and demand respect and get every ounce of blood and sweat from these players. Get some discipline back in the clubhouse because as of right now, it's overrun by immaturity and undisciplined players. That doesn't mean it can't be a fun clubhouse, look at 2004 - fun clubhouse but disciplined, hard working team. After we get the disciplined, hard working mentality back, then we can revert back to a players manager who will let these guys self-discipline. Ultimately, that's the best manager to have - someone who lets the players manage themselves in terms of workouts and conditioning. But right now, that manager isn't going to work. That's what I think they're talking about when they say "Valentine is good for 4-5 years", he's a disciplinarian.
  10. I think he's smart in the sense that he will use all of his resources appropriately. He'll study the spray charts and utilize the shift when he needs to. He'll incorporate sabermetrics when he needs to, and play old school baseball when he needs to. If we're in a 2-1 game, he'll try to manufacture a run in the late innings rather than waiting for the 3-run HR. I think he's a lot like Joe Maddon in that way - not so arrogant that he won't ask a bench coach or a stat guy what they think. That's what I hope, anyway.
  11. The more I hear of Valentines quotes during his press interview, and how he was weaned into the sabermetrics of baseball with his management of the Rangers, the more I'm interested in bringing him in. A quick question I had about him, though. He managed in Japan for what, like 9 years? He knows how the Japanese pitchers work (i.e. less of a pitch count, more of a battle). It will be very curious to see if that translates well once DiceK comes back. If Valentine lets him go out there and just pitch, and not throw to a 110 pitch count, but let him get up into the 130's and 140's like he's used to, I wonder if DiceK will be more comfortable and will go out and pitch like he did in Japan. Also - I wonder, if Valentine is indeed the manager, if that has any impact on Cherington's perception of Yu Darvish.
  12. Exactly. Verlander: 2.40 ERA, 8.96 K/9, 0.92 WHIP (.236 BABIP), 251 IP, 2.99 FIP Weaver: 2.41 ERA, 7.56 K/9, 1.01 WHIP, 235 IP, 3.20 FIP Sabathia: 3.00 ERA, 8.72 K/9, 1.22 WHIP (.318 BABIP), 237 IP, 2.88 FIP If SP is worthy of MVP, there is absolutely no way that Verlander should be MVP, yet Sabathia and Weaver are not even in the top 5. The numbers (outside of Wins, which writers constantly kill the value of wins) are extremely similar. There's no way that Ellsbury shouldn't have won either. He got crushed for the Sox collapse in September, even though he hit .358/.400/.667/1.067 during the month. Just an absolutely horseshit award this year.
  13. Agree. Not at all. We're on the same page, but I think it's getting a bad perception based on some of the comments.
  14. I agree with the hate for Valentine on Sunday Night Baseball, but I was talking to one of my buddies and told him the same thing - just because he's an annoying analyst, that doesn't mean he's going to be a bad manager. I think the leadership and respect he would bring could help this team tremendously.
  15. ....and tell Wakefield to go "win 15 games for someone else". That's hilarious.
  16. Maybe he'll do the same to Beckett and keep the beer out of the clubhouse until after the game. Or at least make them bring the dixie cups into the dugout and watch the game.
  17. At least if Valentine is our new manager, Beckett won't take 30-35 seconds between pitches :dunno:
  18. Couple things after reading through these posts. 1. The biggest connection between Ortiz and the Jays is that the Jays are interested in him. 2. I don't understand the huge fuss about 30 more IL games and the impact on Ortiz. Half would be at home, half would be away. That gives Ortiz 147 games to play in each year. In 2011, he played in 146, and in 9 of those games he was a PH. So the only difference between the new IL schedule and the 2011 schedule is that his days off will be scheduled around IL games in NL parks. Not sure what the big fuss is about.
