    So as far as money goes, my prediction is $350 mil for Harper and $325 mil for Machado.

    Yes it is when you suggest throwing $400 mil at one guy when you need a roster of 25. However good that one player is, he doesn't field every position. Some people here are "do what it takes" because they're hopelessly in love with Betts. I'm saying if it hurts the team as a whole, no.

    Kimmi and dgalehouse are the voices of reason here. There's a point at which it gets stupid - and irresponsible - to hand out the kind of longterm commitment and amount of money that jacko is suggesting. I think we've hit a dangerous plateau with contracts going over $300mil for 7 or 10 years. Like Kimmi said, the team is taking on all of the risk, and getting value in terms of production for maybe half of it if they are lucky. Knowing how likely it is for players to decline into their middle/late thirties, it's insanity to lock them up for that long. I'd rather trade Betts for what we can get in his last pre-FA year than break the bank and shackle the franchise to such a ridiculous degree. No one player is bigger than the team. Ever.

    Thank God you're not the Sox GM. I don't know why there's this apparent rush nowadays to lock up players to longterm deals when they're still arb eligible.

    No one has repeated since 2000. It's not worth going "all out" for if that in any way hampers us down the road.

    There's two sides to the entitled fanbase thing. The other is when you're charging this much for tickets, I think the fans are entitled to expect a certain level of quality in the product, which means perennial playoff contender.

    If you're good enough to stick in MLB, why subject your body to NFL? I know the baseball season is a slog, but the wear and tear is less. Then there's CTE to contend with as well.

    No, because all the GMs see what the bidding is - they just don't see which team makes the bids.

    Why don't baseball GMs have a type of ebay, where they can anonymously post offers, and everyone can see the current top bid (the player and agent see which teams made the bids)? Because as far as I know, everyone bids blindly based on what the agent says about other offers received, as if that's going to be credible information. Players would hate this because it would tighten the market rates for players, with less possibility of wildly overpaying based on rumor (ARod and Texas).

    So does this mean closers shouldn't be in the hall, since saves is usually their best stat? Is there criteria that they can be hall-worthy on, given how little they pitch relative to SPs?

    Isn't this question really unfair, since we know Middlebrooks fell off a cliff, while Devers is still only 22 and has potential for a better career arc.

    Another thing that burns me is guys like Santo who are left dangling forever, then finally get elected....after they've died.

    Agree 100%. I personally don't like these stupid committees that are going back and electing people the writers "missed." One of them has 16 voters, I believe. Way too small to be making these decisions.
