  1. Well said, well said.
  2. If there is anything we should have learned from this season, it is that prospects don't always perform immediately. Maybe it'll take 2-3 years for Xander to start hitting his peak seasons. Then he is the one only controlled for 2 years at peak production.
  3. A beat writer interviewed 4 agents and 4 baseball execs. They all gave predictions for Lester -- all between 144 and 190 million. If the Red Sox can get him for 120 million, they should just do it. Pinching pennies with extremely consistent players willing to meet you in the middle is unwise.
  4. The problem is that for Jeter to get the accolades he has been getting, shouldn't he have led some of these categories? Rivera got a similar treatment, and it annoyed the crap out of most of us... but it is simply a fact that he is the best American closer of all time. Chipper Jones was well received, but not like this. Will other players get this kind of treatment if they have actually led their positions? Joe Mauer, Pujols, Ichiro, Cabrera, and maybe even Cano probably won't have this kind of fanfare... and they are significantly better players.
  5. Someone asked Mike Trout if he someday would ever be as good as Derek Jeter. If I were him, I would take that as an insult.
  6. Its always good to get into the All-star break with lots of momentum. If Buchholz is actually back to being Buchholz, the pitching seems very strong. Lester, Lackey, good-Buchholz, RDLR, Workman/Peavy seems very effective. Dumping AJ adds good mojo for the team. Bradley has started heating up. The Nava/Gomes platoon is working again. Mookie Madness may soon invade Red Sox Nation. Victorino may be back in RF soon enough. Drew has been pulling up his OPS, and will eventually get back to his .750-.800 type OPS numbers.
  7. There has been some talk of the Nationals trading Denard Span to make room in their outfield and opening payroll space. Span is pretty much what the Red Sox wanted out of Bradley -- .700 OPS, 20 steals, excellent defense in centerfield. I wonder if a three team trade involving Peavy might be worthwhile here.
  8. The Yanks don't have the prospects to trade for him, and their outfield already has two 4+ year contracts in it. The timing doesn't seem right for them, hopefully.
  9. Some choice quotes from Lester at the All-star game : If this deal doesn't get done, I blame Henry and Lucchino. Lester wants this to get done. Get it done.
  10. I would be extremely surprised if anyone gives up a mid-level prospect for him. No reason to trade him, unless a contender gets extremely desperate for a super-utility guy.
  11. Bogaerts? No. Lester/Koji in a three-team trade that pulls back prospects... Using those prospects and Doubront/WMB, and one of the non-Owens pitching prospects for Stanton? Absolutely.
  12. With Tanaka out, I think Lester decided that he wants to win the CY Young this year. He's just about due, isn't he?
  13. This is not an I-told-you-so, but every sensible person in baseball was concerned about his durability. I wanted him on the Red Sox, but these were all the very smart and sensible reasons why I was okay that he didn't. He has pitched insane numbers of innings at an early age, going deep into the playoffs the last few years. He also pitched in those crazy Japanese high school tournaments that made Dice-k was famous. Throw him into a league where he has gone from pitching every 6 days to every 5 days, and you're bound to have a problem.
  14. $26 million for 3 years of Carlos Ruiz doesn't seem so bad now that I think about it. His .360 OBP is sitting pretty in Philly, and no one hates him.
  15. You too? It'll be my first time in Chicago, for a wedding. Heading to Wrigley on Sunday.
  16. The Blue Jays are probably the best trade partner here. They showed last year that they are in win-now mode. With Tanaka out for the year, Blue Jay ownership probably sees a prime opportunity to finally get out from underneath the Yankee and Red Sox shadows. Sanchez was ranked at #32 and Stroman was #55 by Baseball America, so the talent to give up is there. Their offense is monstrous. Their starting rotation could use a front of the rotation guy, and their bullpen is pretty shallow.
  17. Lester and Koji are worth more than Walker. I wouldn't trade the pair for any less than two top 50 prospects, and I can cite a dozen examples with comparable prospect returns for top tier pitching.
  18. Atleast we'll always have the Wally Wave. It is frustrating though... it seems to happen in a different inning every game.
  19. This really isn't true. The entire starting staff has been healthy, besides a phantom DL trip for Buchholz. The bullpen has been completely intact. Victorino has been a big loss for the team, and I get the feeling WMB was phantom DLed as well. If you look around baseball, everyone else has had life much worse -- including the Jays and O's who both have significant injury issues.
  20. I'm surprised to see it happen, but the Red Sox just DFAed 9 million dollar man A.J. Pierzynski. Apparently no one wanted him. I wonder how long it will take for the "bad character" claims to show up in Shaugnnesy's article.... tomorrow? Friday? Does this mean they will be without a catcher for the game tonight with Rubby up?
  21. Without Fernandez, they are a go-nowhere team. What if he doesn't come back healthy, or takes him a while to regain his form? You can't bet your organization on two players. 3 bluechip prospects + Doubront + WMB is a huge haul for any player, assuming they still value Middlebrooks highly. With two bluechips coming externally in a Lester/Koji trade, it doesn't really hurt the team that much.
  22. Lester + Koji is a big get for a contending team -- adding last year's ALCS MVP, and a guy who should have been a World Series MVP in any other year would be huge. If they pulled in two blue chips for the pair, they will have far too many top notch prospects. With such a pile of trade chips, Stanton may be attainable. It also soothes the pain of an otherwise awful season. There is the argument that with Fernandez, the Marlins may compete next year, but they just seem so far away in a very tough division.
  23. Trade and try to resign: Lester, Koji Trade and say goodbye: Peavy, Doubront Consider offers: Buchholz, Lackey, Holt, Nava Dump : Drew, AJ, Gomes Keep: Ortiz, Napoli, Pedroia, Tazawa, Victorino, all the rookies.
  24. I'm sure we'll hear grumbling about AJ. If there is a non-player reason for this team's failures, Greg Colbrunn's health issues certainly could not have been good for the offense.
  25. And I want Trout instead of Bradley, but it doesn't mean I'm going to get him. Why is it that whenever the Red Sox want to trade for a mediocre starting pitcher at the trade deadline, it will cost a bluechip, and whenever they want to trade one away teams are willing to giveup a bag of balls?
