  1. This is what I see at Fangraphs. Plenty of outs to the right. Wonder where the Fenway border would be. http://www.fangraphs.com/spraycharts.aspx?playerid=13110&position=OF&type=battedball&pid2=13110&ss1=2014&se1=2014&ss2=2012&se2=2014&cht1=hangtime&cht2=battedball&vs1=ALL&vs2=ALL
  2. Oakland has some of the biggest foul ball territory in baseball. His batting average is sure to go up.
  3. We saw several -- several -- reports from teams being clear that they didn't want to trade away top prospects. Orioles said no on Bundy/Gausman. Cards said no on Taveras/Miller. Brewers said no on their top prospects. Pirates said no on everyone and everything Ben asked for. Dodgers said no. Oakland has been the only hungry team this deadline, and I am extremely surprised, but I get the feeling everyone else have been holding too tight on their prospects. At best, maybe Ben could have gotten a top 50 guy and a top 100 guy, but who knows how they would have turned out. The aces and hammers don't come out of the back half of the top 100. He wanted a top 20 guy, and after the Shark trade, no one else was willing to shell out for two months of Lester. Cespedes is controlled, so he gives them options. They can flip him in the offseason, or next midseason for that top guy they were looking for. Or they can resign him.
  4. This seems exactly the kind of trade I was hoping for, although not the target I had in mind. The Red Sox traded for a player who may be a solid #5 bat, will appease the fans this year, and atleast give the team a year of a controlled player. His BABIP has been a bit low the last two years, and Fenway may also improve his numbers. Its a shame that they weren't able to get someone like a Taveras/Walker/Bundy, but they kept Lester out of the division, and out of the hands of a team who might re-sign him. Not exactly. The numbers seem to say he is a very good left fielder, but has been very mediocre in CF. With his arm, he may play well in RF for the Red Sox, although his range may be a concern, we'll see.
  5. If the Red Sox can lock up Lester/Cespedes in the offseason, might not be a bad trade. Cespedes has great corner outfield defense, is a 25 HR ish bat and could improve offensively in Fenway Park.
  6. Well, considering that I am two blocks from Fenway Park right now, it will be an adjustment.
  7. I'll be at the game in my Lester shirt. Wish they didn't scratch him so he could start one more time here.
  8. It seems like the strongest interest (and likely one-dumb-owner-theory owner) is coming from Seattle. I would be stoked to see Lester go to Seattle, re-sign there, and actually have him there next season after I move.
  9. Unless those players became stars, and help the Sox win 2+ championships, it wouldn't be worth it. It might take two lifetimes, but the goal always will be to catch up on championships.
  10. Looks like the Red Sox have a mystery team in negotiations. The good ole Boras mystery team trick, how many billions has it cost teams over the years? Anyone but the Yankees....
  11. Sounds like a PTBNL for Doubront. Seems harsh for a pitched who has been very solid, and hasn't hit arbitration yet.
  12. mlbtraderumors.com is usually up to date.
  13. Going on at the same time: Lester to O's, in progress. Doubront to Cubs, official. Related? Unrelated?
  14. Looking like Doubront is about to be traded to Theo. My 2015 expectations: 3.50 ERA, 215 IP.
  15. Cards go for Masteron instead. Argument is moot.
  16. Or we trade for pitching and that pitching turns into nothing. Or we trade for Stanton and he turns into nothing. See how this works?
  17. I'm not completely ruling out the option of the trade-and-sign. Lester is willing to do it, and it makes a lot of sense for the team.
  18. Want me to go through the last crop of #2 prospects? Mike Trout, Mat Moore, Stephen Strasburg, David Price, Felix Hernandez, Longoria, Justin Upton. Taveras is insanely valuable, and Ben isn't going to get anything better than that.
  19. If Lester was resigned, the rotation is still good. Lester, Lackey, De la Rosa, veteran, Owens/Ranaudo/Webster is a pretty solid group. Tazawa is still around long term, Uehara will probably get a qualifying offer and come back for the $15 million. The rest of the bullpen is a crapshoot, but it always is. Pedroia, Ortiz, Victorino, Napoli are aging, but they haven't exactly missed big chunks of time over their careers. Add a bat like Hanley , Tulo or Stanton and the offensive dynamic really changes. There has to be a good bat in Xander, Betts, Bradley, WMB, it just might take a few more months to find it. I see plenty of potential, and there is plenty of money to get there. Losing Lester would be the real problem.
  20. Oscar Tavares is regarded as the second best prospect in all of baseball. If he is on the table, Ben isn't asking around for other offers.
  21. With Lester's scratch today, and trade talks heating up, things are getting real. And for Lester more than anyone. Maybe now is the perfect time to throw out that last 120 million dollar offer and see where his heart is.
  22. My guess is that the Red Sox already have the book on Austin Meadows, having passed on him in the 2013 draft. Who knows if that helps or hurts his chances of coming here -- but it does mean they probably know plenty about him.
  23. I have tickets to tonight's game, and was hoping to see Lester pitch his last game with the Sox. Hopefully 2015 isn't a bridge year.
  24. At worst, Lester would make 1 or 2 starts against the Red Sox. It would also lower the chances of the Yankees getting to the playoffs. If the O's or Jays are willing to give up real value that hurts their own future for the sake of one year, then the FO may be pull the trigger.
  25. The list of suitors is the Blue Jays, Mariners, Brewers, Cardinals, Dodgers, Orioles and Marlins. Someone is going to overpay.
