  1. Part of that may be because most of the AL East has been hitting knuckleballs for years, and Red Sox players have almost never seen them. Ortiz, and Pedroia have not faced many, and the rest of the team is rookies. Maybe Victorino has some experience against Dickey? I don't know, it does seem very strange.
  2. Based on what I have been reading, Lester is the premier trade chip this season. With Tampa holding onto Price, and Cliff Lee struggling with injuries/ineffectiveness, Lester is that guy. How many times has this argument been made: If you can win a championship by trading top prospects and mortgaging the future, do it. Teams know how good Lester is, and saw him dominate the World Series last year. The Red Sox are going to get a significant prospect for him. Even if that prospect is used as a centerpiece to trade for someone next offseason, the value will still be there.
  3. I'm not really a prospect expert. Swap him with Bundy or another top pitching prospect from a contender if you'd like. Maybe, maybe not. Teams like Oakland and Tampa have gone the route of using a rotation of entirely top-end pitching prospects, and it has gone well for them. It also means there will be plenty of money in the organization to fill the gaps.
  4. If the Red Sox deal both Lester and Lackey, they are getting top 20 prospects back for each of them. The 2015 rotation would look something more like this: Taijuan Walker Julio Urias Some veteran signing Rubby De La Rosa Alan Webster
  5. The OBP and walk titles was meant to show that he's dominated in multiple categories, not that it has any significance as a title in itself. All the guys who have produced similar numbers are HOFers in this period. Why not Oriz?
  6. It seems pointless to keep throwing Buch out there. His career seems pretty much over to me. Doubront atleast may have built some of his value back for a potential trade.
  7. 9 All-star nominations, 5 top-five MVP nominations and a top-10 mvp nomination. 6 silver sluggers, 3 rings, two RBI titles, a HR title two walk titles, an OBP title. Over the years Ortiz was active, you will only find a handful of his contemporaries who have put up numbers as consistent as his. Pujols, Cabrera, Holliday, Fielder, Guerrero. The list of guys with his level of production at the plate is not very long -- especially in the post-steroid era of drug testing and such. It really just depends on how voters look at the drugs that he may have taken.
  8. Adam Dunn has a chance to hit those numbers, minus the rings. But after second glance, Dunn is likely to break the all time strikeout record too.
  9. News from the morning. Apparently Lester is getting hot, and is likely to be traded. Andrew Miller is also getting lots of calls, and might be the best lefty reliever available. The other news is that the 40 man roster is getting cramped, and the Sox will need to deal with a roster crunch. Tulo talked about getting traded to the Red Sox recently. It seems more and more likely that they will stockpile prospects now, and trade them for a cornerstone player like Tulo, Hamels or Stanton.
  10. I got heckled at Wrigley last week for that. What the hell?
  11. I've thought about it. In reality, it is very likely hat the Red Sox are just screwing around, and aren't interested in signing him. There was a report out this week that the Red Sox haven't increased their offer above 70 million yet, which seems insane to me.
  12. Spoke too soon here. Rough inning for him in the 5th.
  13. First base was one of the areas where they did well last year. Napoli has a pretty solid slash line, very good OBP and has been solid defensively. He also took less money to stay in Boston. Abreu has turned out to be a very good player, but when you can get an .850 OPS and reasonable contract from a guy you know can perform under the pressure in this park, sometimes it is safer to take the sure thing.
  14. The current rumor is Lester to the Dodgers. Some combination of Kemp and/or Pederson. Hopefully it won't be Kemp, the guy hasn't had a good year since 2010.
  15. It also gives the Dodgers a leg up on negotiations with him. Better them than the Yankees.
  16. Mike Carp is requesting to be traded. And so it begins.
  17. We're at the point in the season where we will start to see prospects play. So far, Webster has dominated AAA and sucked in the majors. Maybe he doesn't have what it takes to play in this league, but this is the best time to figure out if he can or cannot.
  18. Ben had a rough year, but he really looks like he ate San Francisco's lunch here. That's a big league trade for Ben, especially for a guy in Peavy was a few bad starts away from being DFAed. On further inspection, Escobar has had a rough year in AAA, but he's only 22.
  19. So.... The Red Sox got Edwin Escobar, Baseball America's #56 prospect this year. No word on the Red Sox eating money yet What the hell were the Giants thinking?
  20. A report coming out this morning that the Red Sox are close to a Peavy trade, possibly to the Giants.
  21. It seems clear to both of us that the FO got cheap and complacent last offseason. However, the last time the team finished in last place, they signed seven free agents, mostly to big contracts. This organization is committed to building a winning team. Why? Because winning teams make them money, and I believe they will do their due diligence to make more money next year. Not even Owens? He's been practically untouchable in the minors, and he has been going 7+ innings pretty much every time out.
  22. His agent is probably not happy about most of the things he has said about the Red Sox, but his agent probably doesn't care now that the payday has gone from 70 million to 160 million.
  23. http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2014/07/25/notebook-scouts-keeping-close-eye-red-sox-trade-deadline-looms/QUYNk0wXPJHe4On3Fh52xH/story.html Lester saying that he'd be willing to go on a vacation to another club, hold no hard feelings, and resign with the Red Sox. I am still convinced that would be the right decision here.
  24. Waiting on this team's prospects will take far longer than most of us are willing to wait. Most of the best Red Sox players in recent years were traded to the team from different organizations. Pedro, Varitek, Ortiz, young-Beckett, Schilling, Lowell, Jason Bay. The Red Sox just need to find the right deal.
  25. The year didn't go as planned. The young players slumped and had growing pains. The front office s*** the bed with resigning Lester. Is it bad? Absolutely. However, we need to keep perspective. This isn't like 2011 where all seemed lost. The Red Sox will have plenty of money to spend in 2014. They have plenty of prospects to trade, and plenty of young players who may blossom into superstars. Henry Owens has been utterly unhittable in the minors. Think about this: the worst contract in the organization is Dustin Pedroia. There is a lot to be positive about in this organization. They suck now, but they'll be back next year with a better offense and more balanced bullpen.
