  1. Why? I haven't heard a single word about his wrist being a problem since 2009. He had no major injury issues in either the minor leagues, or in college, so why is it blatantly assumed he'll be hurt again?
  2. How many baseball related injuries has he had? I can only think of one. And the only reason why it got so bad was because he was trying to tough it out, and it inevitably got worse. How long did it take for Ortiz to fully recover from wrist problems?
  3. Wait, are there actually "Real health concerns" about Lowrie? You never mentioned actual injuries involved, just the possibility of more. Lowrie, Theo and Francona have all talked about him as perfectly health lately-- are there reports that say otherwise? Factual injuries would change this conversation sharply, but so far it has just sounded like conjecture." Its funny, I could have sworn Lowrie was the "shortstop of the future" at one point too.
  4. There is also the possibility that Iglesias spends 2011 in AA, gets called up to Pawtucket mid-season, gets called up to Boston at the end of 2012. Youk's contract is up at the end of 2012, with an option for 2013, so they could either not pick up the option, or let him DH. In that scenario, Iggy is SS, Lowrie is 3B. The glove is fine, his bat is what we worry about, and I think giving him ample time to work on developing skills couldn't hurt, but then again, I always prefer giving players as much time in the minors as possible.
  5. Toronto has lost a ton this offseason, now they've moved Vernon Wells, which I think is a solid move for both teams. Picking up a 4/80 contract on a strong CF when the market for elite outfielders is insane (VW isn't exactly elite, but 4 years is much better than 7) and the next offseason is very thin. Toronto can't afford bad contracts of that size, but the trade happened late enough that that money won't be going anywhere significant any time soon.
  6. Health and SSS, no. Grossly overperformed, perhaps a little bit. I usually preface any Lowrie loving with "if he's healthy" and I constantly point out that he did so well despite not playing for the past two years. I can't think of any case where players come back from years of injuries and play like the best player at their position in the league.
  7. Even the scout you quoted had several negative things to say about Iglesias's bat. We've seen a ton of over-hyped prospects over the last few years. If his bat is underwhelming now, and turns to be even worse when facing major league pitching, that is my concern. I don't think that is unreasonable.
  8. I don't recall mentioning defense anywhere. If he hits .180 in the majors, it won't matter how his glove is, especially if Lowrie turns into an above average defender. I have read more than one scouting report that has called Iggy's bat underwhelming, and that's my concern. Hand eye coordination may translate into improved hitting and walk totals.... but it might not. The Sox will have 3 options at SS going into 2012, and until I see something more than defensive web gems from Iggy, I'm not making any assumptions. And as much as I like Al-gon, last year in Toronto was kind of screwy. His power went up, but his defense dropped much closer to average.
  9. Since when did minor league numbers mean anything? Dojji is treated like a laughing stock every time he mentions any of them. Until Iglesias can hit at a level above A ball, I see no reason to assume he'll be handed the SS job in 2012.
  10. If Papelbon has a great 2011, we're not getting him for 1/10. Consider that he only blew 3 saves in 2009, his agent could very easily argue that 2010 was just an off-year, and he could probably get an elite closer deal.
  11. The problem with these two players is that we've already pretty much hit a stand still in discussion. Until we see more, we've pretty much looked at everything. Iggy- pros: plus plus defense. FO seems to believe he'll be the SS of the future. Cons: no power. No evidence of how he'll hit in the majors. Lowrie-- pros: hits good when healthy. Can play any infield position. 9 home runs in 55 AB. cons: health concerns. SSS. HR power not present in minor league stats. Defense may not be as good as we saw in 2010. He also suffers from sexy beast syndrome and may get other illness or diseases from it besides mono. (That last line proving how thoroughly discussed this has been).
  12. In 55 games, Lowrie had a 1.8 WAR last season. Iglesias has elite defense, but his bat still needs work, and he's yet to see the majors. Until we see more of Iggy--and to a lesser extent Lowrie-- making a judgement on who is going to be more valuable than the other is a little premature.
  13. You guys are clearly overthinking this.
  14. Great move by the Rays, they have nothing to lose on this. And to put it into perspective Manny hit better than Arod, and Damon hit better than Jeter in 2010..
  15. We get Wheeler and Crawford, they get Manny and Damon. How about next year, why don't they give us Longoria, and they can sign Mike Lowell?
  16. He's the next Hanley or Tulo. There But the team is actually better with him as a utility man.
  17. I knew I was forgetting someone haha.
  18. Put a slugger entering his prime into the middle of the best offense in the majors in a park that will give him a 10% boost in production, and his counting numbers go up dramatically. Votto, Fielder, Pujols are in the NL. Texeira is a yankee, so I won't name him MVP. Morneau has injury problems, Youk is coming off injury. Or, I'll just admit I'm a homer, and get it over with haha.
  19. Sounds familiar. The same applies to Beckett and Dice-k. Having those guys rotate in and out when they get hurt might be a good idea.
  20. Didn't Toronto lose Marcum and their entire bullpen? Plus, no way they'll be able to reproduce those home runs totals in 2011.
  21. A very interesting article on Jed Lowrie http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/baseball/red_sox/view/20110119healthy_optimism_lowrie_not_short_on_hope_in_bid_to_be_a_sox_starter/
  22. Oakland... they very well could win that division.
  23. Carl Pavano is one of my all-time favorite Yankees. I'd love to see him back in pinstripes.
