  1. Let me put it this way. How would you feel about Scott Atchison pitching the 7th and 8th innings again? That's what will happen if the Sox give Papelbon the megadeal he wants.
  2. Well I'm having 2011 flashbacks. And flashbacks from 2010 when the 5th through 7th innings were a complete and utter shitshow. And 2009 flashbacks.
  3. Burnout can build over many years. Wear and tear does not always go away after the season ends. That's the beauty of a bullpen by committee, if Bard starts looking inconsistent, give him a breather, let someone take over.
  4. You don't seem to get it. The reason why Bard burned out is because the Red Sox have stacked their bullpen at the top, and the middle options are worthless. If they had more reliable options in the pen, they wouldn't have needed to overuse Bard, and they wouldn't have had that problem.
  5. As Daniel Bard has shown us? His arm burned out. Period. Between the months of April and August Bard had a WHIP of .80. Let's put that into perspective: Rivera has had exactly one season with a WHIP lower than that. One.
  6. It doesn't really matter to me. My perspective is that everyone says how important it is to have an elite closer... but the last two times the season was on the line, Papelbon blew it. So what difference does it make? I'd rather take that 4/50 contract, and sign three 2/8 now, and three more 2/8 for 14. We're talking six contracts for 4 million dollars a year a piece. Six! That will pay for pretty much any elite setup man without closer experience. The whole problem of this team going into 2011 was that they put all their money into just a few baskets, instead of making smart decisions and creating depth at multiple positions. Oh, and two first round draft picks. It took two first round draft picks plus a quality prospect to get A-gon, so we're basically saying 60% of the chips for a big deal, just from dropping a guy that will cost far more than he's worth to the team.
  7. I've been saying this since 2009. Drop him, take the value, and rebuild the bullpen BALANCED, instead of focused on one guy. Everyone talks about how great Papelbon is, and forgets how terrible the setup has been. It is more important to the team to be good from the 6th to the 9th than terrible from the 6th through 7th, and then great to excellent in the latest innings.
  8. Weren't the Phillies the biggest suitors for Papelbon already?
  9. When the collective bargaining agreement expired, the luxury tax is not longer in effect. From what I've read, it sounds like all the team execs simply assume that it will be back, and base spending on that assumption.
  10. Most of us who want to drop Ortiz and trade Ellsbury are working under the assumption that a RHH RF would be picked up to replace the production of Ortiz. I explicitly mentioned picking up an extra bat in my post.
  11. Sure, but look at the offense that the Red Sox didn't make the playoffs with in 2011. Trading Ellsbury is about balancing the team. Pedroia, A-gon, Youk, Crawford, Scutaro, Reddick/Kalish, Salty/Lavs with an addition of a quality RHH RF is still pretty good.
  12. :lol::lol:
  13. I disagree with all of this except Buerhle. You're suggesting we re-sign our expensive free agents that have already peaked, pick up Sizemore who is yet another broken LHH RF, those relievers are big names who will get destroyed in the AL East, and Kuroda refused to leave the Dodgers last year.
  14. Laser show-- just a heads-up. Francouer re-upped with the Royals on a very team friendly deal. He's been very vocal about wanting to stay there, and they were pretty clear that they wanted to keep him.
  15. I see him getting a frontloaded shorter contract. Howard's 5/125 seems like a good comparison. 6/130-150 if a team is desperate enough. I see the same candidates out there as the Pujols sweepstakes-- Brewers, Cubs, Mets, Nationals, Cardinals.
  16. Thanks!! That means Atwork's totals are in fact correct. He overestimated the performance bonuses by quite a bit, so we're looking at roughly 26-27 million to spend.
  17. +4.16 for Scutaro -2.65 for Lackey if 6th season option is excercised. + 157.02 for my original estimate ------------------------------------------------------------ 158.53, Although, that doesn't include bonuses for players who reached milestones. Ellsbury's 600 PA, 3 gold gloves, 6 all-stars, 3-4 silver sluggers, 1 mvp... the full contract details don't appear to be available, but it looks like that'll be about an extra million, and performance bonuses ARE included, I can confirm that one.
  18. We're talking about luxury tax totals, not actual salaries. Baseball reference's numbers are salaries, so that chart is not what we're discussing.
