  1. The curious thing about Roy Oswalt is that the two teams he picked as his desired locations.... were World Series teams. Another big suitor-- the Detroit Tigers-- were spurned by him. And whenever small market teams are reported to be interested, those reports seem to disappear almost immediately. All of the playoff teams are pitching heavy (except the Tigers) and so are the Braves. The Cardinals and Rangers both need to reject him outright before he comes to Boston, but if those teams both say no, I'd bet Boston is his next destination.
  2. His peripherals scared me quite a bit when the Red Sox were talking about him. Opposing batters hit .290 against him in 2011, and that was in the NL/AL central.
  3. Big name recognition, and innings probably. Edwin Jackson is a very mediocre pitcher, who asked for outrageous things this offseason. He does have potential to be much better, but he hasn't filled that potential.
  4. I noticed the same thing.
  5. I'd rather a guy with substandard stuff who gets results than a guy with elite stuff with poor results (Edwin Jackson). Lannan has a better career ERA+ than Jackson. The options aren't good, and I'm not suggesting he'll be great, or even good. But if he can give some innings that aren't completely terrible, that's all I'm asking for right now.
  6. Word is, the Nationals are trying to get rid of John Lannan. At 5 million, the Red Sox may actually be able to afford him. He's not great... but neither are the Red Sox's other options. Give them Doubront, Lars Anderson, and a bag of rocks and call it a day.
  7. The majority of us were not fond of him to begin with. a 1.50 whip is not going to get you far in the East. But... he's still better than Cook. If Ben doesn't go all-out for Floyd/Oswalt, it may be time to put 2-3 million out there for Duke/Harden to increase the odds of getting it lucky with their current group.
  8. If they want to win, they're going to have to break the cap. It is as simple as that. Their best bet is to continue just breaking it slightly. They've been over it by 5-10 million a year, and it only costs them 2-5 million. In the general scheme of things, that is not a big deal-- especially when we're talking about adding a one-year contract to put it there.
  9. I understand the reluctance to avoid Wilson/Darvish/Buerhle. But they have no excuse to pinch pennies on a one year contract when they traded away the team's starting shortstop. If they need money, they can settle Theo's contract for financial considerations, or cut a deal with Ortiz. I understand the need to stick to a budget, but holding out on a crucial piece of the team to save 2% of the current payroll is nonsense. The Red Sox are losing the advantage of being able to overpay players in the draft-- where is that money going, exactly?
  10. I do not agree with this at all. Lester has a career ERA+ of 128. Price has an ERA+ of 117. You could make the case that they're on the same level... but better? Not even close.
  11. Report just came out from WEEI a few minutes ago: This is not good. Not good at all.
  12. So... the Red Sox drop a 6 million shortstop who hit .300 and are pursuing a guy who costs 5.5 million who hit .245 last year? Ridiculous. No way this happens.
  13. Amend the chart! Seriously, what you're saying goes against everything that the reports have been saying. They exchanged lists of players....
  14. I think it is about time to meet in the middle and resolve arbitration with Aceves, give Ortiz a 13 million dollar take-it-or-leave it, and put out a 8 million dollar offer to both of the good remaining pitchers. Bargain with the Cubs to take 2-3 million of Jenks salary with Epstein if you have to, just get it done. It just seems like this has been more complicated than it needed to be.
